South Atlanta High School

The Fulton County School System is a school district headquartered in Sandy Springs, Georgia, United States. The system serves the area of Fulton County outside the Atlanta city limits (which are served by Atlanta Public Schools). Fulton County Schools serve the cities of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell, and Sandy Springs north of Atlanta, and Chattahoochee Hills, College Park, East Point, Fairburn, Hapeville, Palmetto, Union City, and Fulton's remaining unincorporated areas in the south. Fulton County is the fourth-largest school system in Georgia. The Fulton County school district is the only non-contiguous school district in the state, having a 17-mile (27 km) separation (Atlanta Public Schools) between the north and south. As of the 2012–2013 school year, Fulton has 11,500 full-time employees, including 7,500 teachers and other certified personnel, who work in 99 schools and 15 administrative and support buildings. Approximately 94,000 students attend classes in 58 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 19 high schools, and seven charter schools. Fulton County Schools is overseen by a seven-member board, all of whom are elected by geographic electoral district to four-year terms. Members of the Fulton County Board of Education are elected to four-year terms. Elections are held in even-numbered years. As of 2019, the school members include: District 1 - Katha Stuart, District 2 - Katie Reeves, District 3 - Gail Dean, District 4 - Linda Bryant, District 5 - Linda McCain, District 6 - Kimberly Dove, District 7 - Julia Bernath.

Southside Park is, at 211 acres (0.85 km2), the largest park in the City of Atlanta. It is located along Jonesboro Road in the southern part of the city just north of the Perimeter (I-285). Its rank as the city's largest park is set to be eclipsed by the new Westside Park at 351 acres (1.42 km2). Southside Park is mostly undeveloped forest and a baseball diamond, concession stand, and parking lot. In 2007, the city completed a study for the development of the park. The study called out the lack of facilities in the park and the difficulty of access on foot, by bike, and by public transportation. In 2013, the City of Atlanta funded a study by the trail consulting arm of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) which was completed in December 2013. The resulting Conceptual Design Report describes a potential for 6.5 miles of natural surface trail (known in mountain biking circles as "singletrack") suitable for bicyclists, runners, and hikers. The report includes detailed trail design information and cost estimates. The planned trails are situated in a "stacked loop" system, guiding visitors through progressively more challenging terrain as they move deeper into the forest. The planned trail system features a beginner loop, intermediate loop, and advanced loop, as well as a wooden boardwalk and bridge over Poole Creek. In 2016, the 1.2-mile beginner loop was constructed using funds donated by Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) under direction of the Atlanta Chapter of the Southern Offroad Bicycling Association (SORBA Atlanta.) In October 2016, the City of Atlanta and representatives of affiliated organizations and the local community officially opened the "Evergreen Trail." Additional trail construction will proceed as SORBA Atlanta raises the necessary funds.

The South River Forest or Weelaunee Forest is an area in southeast metro Atlanta, DeKalb County, Georgia, United States named after the nearby South River. The South River is also known by its Muscogee Creek name, the "Weelaunee". The area includes significant disparate, undeveloped forested parcels that help protect the river and tributaries. The area was originally identified and named the "South River Park" by Atlanta's Department of City Planning (Aspiring to the Beloved Community, 2017 Design for Nature section, pages 320-349) and identified as one of the lungs of Atlanta to be established as a conservation zone. Subsequently, The Nature Conservancy, the South River Watershed Alliance, South River Forest Coalition, Save the Old Atlanta Prison Farm, and others collaborated in an effort to hold Atlanta accountable to its conservation plan for the area. In 2021, local community members and Muscogee Creek representatives dubbed the South River Forest the "Weelaunee Forest". The area itself is made up of disparate forested parcels that protect Atlanta's urban South River and its tributaries. The forest once held a prison farm, and it is a proposed site for a police training facility that has garnered protests.

South Bend Cemetery (also known as Old South Bend Cemetery and Silver Brook Cemetery) is a cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia near the Federal Penitentiary. The cemetery dates to the 1800s and was maintained by the South Bend Methodist Church, which was located about 6 blocks southwest at 850 Mcwilliams Road. The church disbanded in the 1990s. By 2008 the cemetery was overgrown. A group of volunteers cleared the overgrowth during 2008–2011.

Constitution was a pre-Civil War community south of Atlanta. A prison was located there. Currently, Metro State Prison is located near the old abandoned prison. The city had a circular city limit and half of it was in Fulton County and half of it was in DeKalb County. When Atlanta annexed the Thomasville area in 1952, it took up half of what was left of Constitution, which predated everything around it.

The Hickory Ridge Landfill is a municipal solid waste landfill located in Conley, Georgia, United States, and privately owned by Republic Services. The site was opened in 1993 and closed in 2006; it contains nearly 9,000,000 cubic yards (6,880,994 cubic meters) of waste. The Hickory Ridge Landfill was capped in October 2011 with a dual-purpose landfill closure system referred to as an Exposed Geo membrane Solar Cover (EGSC). Developed by Carlisle Energy Services, the closure system provides renewable electricity via (photovoltaic) solar panels, The project is the second installation of an EGSC and is the world's largest installed system. At the time of commissioning it was the largest solar photovoltaic system in the state of Georgia.

Thomasville Heights is a neighborhood in southeast Atlanta, Georgia.

Metro State Prison, previously the Metro Correctional Institution, is a former Georgia Department of Corrections prison for women in unincorporated southern DeKalb County, Georgia, near Atlanta. Female death row inmates (UDS, "under death sentence") were held in the Metro State Prison. The prison had room for 779 prisoners. It was closed in 2011.

South-View Cemetery is a historic African-American-founded cemetery located approximately 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Georgia. An active operational cemetery on over 100 acres of land, it is the oldest African-American cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia and the oldest African-American “non eleemosynary” corporation in the country. Founded in 1886, it has since served as the burial place for many leaders in the civil rights movement including Julian Bond and John Lewis. Martin Luther King Jr. was originally buried here but was later moved to the King National Historic Park in Atlanta.

Shadowbox Studios (formerly Blackhall Studios) is an American film and television production studio located southeast of Atlanta in DeKalb County, Georgia. The studio has housed productions of many films and television programs and has worked with Hollywood studios including Disney, Universal, Sony, Warner Bros. and HBO.

The Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, commonly known as Cop City, is a police and fire services training campus under construction in the South River Forest area of Dekalb County near Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Much of the land included in the plans was formerly part of the Old Atlanta Prison Farm, which was abandoned in 1995. In 2021, the location was identified by the City of Atlanta as the only suitable location to build the training center. This resulted in the development of Stop Cop City, a multi-faceted movement opposing the construction of the training center. In January 2023, Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, a member of the Stop Cop City movement, was fatally shot by Atlanta police. Following the shooting, law enforcement accused Terán of firing at officers, however this is disputed by Terán’s family. Protesters affiliated with the Stop Cop City movement were arrested in late 2022 and early 2023 and charged with domestic terrorism offenses; the validity of these charges has been called into question and created a nationwide controversy.

Stop Cop City (SCC), also known as Block Cop City & Defend the Atlanta Forest (DTF), is a decentralized movement in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, whose goal is to stop construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center by the Atlanta Police Foundation and the City of Atlanta. The proposed location for the facility is the Old Atlanta Prison Farm, and opponents of the facility are concerned about the growth of policing in the city—which has witnessed several protests against police violence following the 2020 murder of George Floyd and the killing of Rayshard Brooks, both by police officers.Proponents of the training facility say that the project is necessary to improve police morale and to fight crime. They have said that there is no feasible alternative location for the training center and that the Old Atlanta Prison Farm is "not a forest". Critics of the training facility state that the center will increase militarization of police and that destruction of the forest will exacerbate economic disparities and ecological collapse in a poor-majority Black neighborhood. On January 18, 2023, Georgia State Patrol Officers shot and killed Manuel Esteban Paez Terán during a raid on the occupied encampment.
