East Knoyle

The East Knoyle War Memorial is a monument that commemorates the lives of soldiers from East Knoyle, Wiltshire, England, who were killed in war. Unveiled on 26 September 1920, it was originally intended to commemorate the 20 soldiers from the parish who died during the First World War. Subsequent inscriptions were added to recognise twelve who were killed in the Second World War, and a soldier killed by friendly fire in the Iraq War. In 2016 the memorial was designated a Grade II listed building. The memorial was designed by Herbert Maryon, who taught sculpture at the University of Reading. It consists of a three-stepped stone base, a square plinth, and a shaft that rises 16 feet (4.9 m) and terminates in a small wheel cross. Each side of the plinth is inscribed. The front bears an inscription dedicated to those who died in the world wars; each is named on the right and rear. The left panel includes a Bible verse and the name of the soldier who died in Iraq.

Clouds House, also known simply as Clouds, is a Grade II* listed building at East Knoyle in Wiltshire, England. Designed by Arts and Crafts architect Philip Webb for Percy Wyndham and his wife Madeline, it was first completed in 1886, but an 1889 fire necessitated its rebuilding, finished in 1891. Clouds was Webb's grandest design. It became a centre of social activity for the intellectual group known as The Souls, and was frequented by artists such as Edward Burne-Jones and politicians like Arthur Balfour.Since 1983 the house has been a treatment centre for drug dependence and alcohol dependence, under the name Clouds House. In 2007 the Clouds House treatment centre merged with two other organisations to form the charity Action on Addiction, which is headquartered at East Knoyle.

Sedgehill and Semley is a civil parish in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the town of Shaftesbury on the main A350 road. It is in the southwest of Wiltshire and adjoins Dorset. The parish includes the villages of Sedgehill and Semley, and the hamlets of Barkers Hill (in the southeast, towards Donhead St Andrew) and Sem Hill (near Semley). The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 601.The River Sem forms part of the northern boundary of the parish, and is fed by several streams which cross the parish in a generally northeasterly direction. The Sem joins the River Nadder in the northeast corner of the parish near Wardour, and the short eastern boundary of the parish follows the course of the Nadder.

Sedgehill is a former civil parish, with scattered small settlements, now within Sedgehill and Semley civil parish in the southwest of the English county of Wiltshire. It lies to the west of the A350 primary route, about 3+1⁄4 miles (5 km) north of Shaftesbury, Dorset.

Hang Wood (grid reference ST861319) is a 20.3 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1986.

Semley is a village in Sedgehill and Semley civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about 3 miles (4.8 km) north-east of Shaftesbury in neighbouring Dorset. The hamlet of Sem Hill lies about a quarter of a mile west of the village. The River Sem, from which the village takes its name, forms part of the northern boundary of the parish.

Pertwood is an ancient settlement and former parish, near Warminster in the county of Wiltshire in the west of England. Its land and houses now lie in the parishes of Brixton Deverill, East Knoyle, Sutton Veny and Chicklade, and have fewer than twenty inhabitants. The settlements are close together at Upper Pertwood (also called Higher Pertwood) and Lower Pertwood. Higher Pertwood is now Pertwood Manor Farm, while Lower Pertwood is Pertwood Organic Farm.

Semley was a railway station in Wiltshire, England. It was served by trains on the West of England Main Line and was the railhead for the town of Shaftesbury, Dorset, 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) to the south. Although several plans were made to give Shaftesbury its own station, the town's position on a hill prevented this. The nearest station to Shaftesbury is now Gillingham.

West Knoyle is a small village and civil parish in southwest Wiltshire, England, close to the southern edge of Salisbury Plain. The village is about 2.5 miles (4 km) east of Mere and 8 miles (13 km) south of Warminster. The A303 trunk road passes about 0.75 miles (1,210 m) north of the village.

Pythouse, sometimes spelled Pyt House and pronounced pit-house, is a country house in southwest Wiltshire, in the west of England. It is about 2+1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) west of the village of Tisbury. Described as a "fine classical house", Pythouse is set in parkland with a ha-ha separating the formal house lawn from surrounding parkland on which livestock may graze. It has an Ionic portico, and the front elevation may have inspired the design of Philipps House at nearby Dinton, which was begun in 1813 and designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. Leigh Court in Somerset was later built to the plans used for Pythouse.

Hindon is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about 16 miles (26 km) west of Salisbury and 9.6 miles (15.4 km) south of Warminster. It is in the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hindon was a market town but is now a village.
