Magnolia Plantation, also known as the Boteler-Holder Farm, is a historic house and former slave plantation located at Knoxville, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2-story, five-bay-wide house built about 1835, with a 1+1⁄2-story three-bay rear addition, set on finely coursed local fieldstone foundations. Also on the property are several modern outbuildings and a barn, and nearby is a private cemetery with a number of grave markers bearing the name Boteler.The Magnolia Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Weverton is an unincorporated community hamlet located in the southern tip of Washington County, Maryland, United States, near the north shore of the Potomac River. Its population is about 500. Weverton is located at the intersection of MD Route 67 and U.S. Route 340. The nearest incorporated communities are Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the west) and Brunswick ( 2.7 miles (4.3 km) to the east). Weverton's approximate elevation is 475 feet (145 m) above sea level. Weverton Cliffs, at the southern end of South Mountain where that ridge is interrupted by the Potomac River, are a landmark on the Appalachian Trail; they sit nearly at the halfway point of the trail and are well-known to through hikers. Weverton is the northwestern end of CSX Transportation's Metropolitan Subdivision, a 79-mile rail line that runs to Washington, D.C.

Yarrowsburg is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 133 as of the 2010 census.

Elk Ridge, or Elk Mountain, is a mountain ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Maryland and is the westernmost of four parallel ridges. It forms the western side of a narrow valley in which are situated the towns of Yarrowsburg and Brownsville. South Mountain is on the eastern side of this valley running roughly parallel to it. The ridge runs from Rohrersville, in the north, to the Potomac River across from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, in the south. Across the Potomac the ridge continues as Blue Ridge Mountain in Virginia and West Virginia. To the west of Elk Mountain is the broader Cumberland Valley, in which lie the towns of Hagerstown and Chambersburg, and the Potomac River. The southern end of the ridge, which is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is known as Maryland Heights.

Sandy Hook is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 188 as of the 2010 census. Sandy Hook was briefly important as for a few years it was the end of the line for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, then under construction. This period ended with the opening of the B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing in 1837. During John Brown's 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, just 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west, across the bridge, a special train that had carried soldiers was parked at Sandy Hook, and it carried the telegraph that reporters used to send out voluminous stories. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad night watchman Patrick Higgins lived in Sandy Hook from 1853 until his death in 1915. At the time of his death he was the longest tenured employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Patrick has been written about extensively for his role in John Brown's Raid of 1859.

Brownsville (also Banjotown) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, United States, near Gapland in an area known as Pleasant Valley. Its population was 89 as of the 2010 census.

Piney Run is a tributary of the Potomac River in Loudoun County, Virginia. The creek is the principal drainage of the upper Between the Hills valley in northwestern Loudoun County. The headwaters of the creek are located approximately 1.75 miles (2.82 km) south of Neersville, Virginia, just west of State Route 671 (Harpers Ferry Road). Just prior to an impoundment, 5 miles (8.0 km) from its headwaters on the property of the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship, the creek is joined by its only named tributary branch, Sweet Run. From the impoundment, the creek flows 2 miles (3.2 km), to the crossing by State Route 671, whereupon the creek cuts a deep gorge, falling 150 feet (46 m) over its last 2 miles (3.2 km). Just prior to its confluence with the Potomac below the White Horse Rapids, 4,500 feet (1,400 m) down river from the confluence with the Shenandoah River, the creek passes through a culvert under U.S. Route 340 and then cascades approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) over a waterfall, the only in Loudoun County.

Samples Manor is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Maryland, United States. The Kennedy Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Kennedy Farm is a National Historic Landmark property on Chestnut Grove Road in rural southern Washington County, Maryland. It is notable as the place where the radical abolitionist John Brown planned and began his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia), in 1859. Also known as the John Brown Raid Headquarters and Kennedy Farmhouse, the log, stone, and brick building has been restored to its appearance at the time of the raid. The farm is now owned by a preservation nonprofit.

The Potomac Water Gap is a double water gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains, located at the intersection of the states of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, near Harpers Ferry. At 256 feet (78 m), it is the lowest crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Loudoun Heights is an unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. It is located in the Between the Hills region of the county along Harpers Ferry Road (VA 671) and is bounded to its northwest and northeast by the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park on the Potomac River. The Blue Ridge and Short Hill Mountain bound it to the west and east.
