The Kennedy Farm is a National Historic Landmark property on Chestnut Grove Road in rural southern Washington County, Maryland. It is notable as the place where the radical abolitionist John Brown planned and began his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia), in 1859. Also known as the John Brown Raid Headquarters and Kennedy Farmhouse, the log, stone, and brick building has been restored to its appearance at the time of the raid. The farm is now owned by a preservation nonprofit.

Elk Ridge, or Elk Mountain, is a mountain ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Maryland and is the westernmost of four parallel ridges. It forms the western side of a narrow valley in which are situated the towns of Yarrowsburg and Brownsville. South Mountain is on the eastern side of this valley running roughly parallel to it. The ridge runs from Rohrersville, in the north, to the Potomac River across from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, in the south. Across the Potomac the ridge continues as Blue Ridge Mountain in Virginia and West Virginia. To the west of Elk Mountain is the broader Cumberland Valley, in which lie the towns of Hagerstown and Chambersburg, and the Potomac River. The southern end of the ridge, which is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is known as Maryland Heights.

Magnolia Plantation, also known as the Boteler-Holder Farm, is a historic house and former slave plantation located at Knoxville, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2-story, five-bay-wide house built about 1835, with a 1+1⁄2-story three-bay rear addition, set on finely coursed local fieldstone foundations. Also on the property are several modern outbuildings and a barn, and nearby is a private cemetery with a number of grave markers bearing the name Boteler.The Magnolia Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Robert Clagett Farm is a historic home and farm located at Knoxville, Washington County, Maryland, United States. The house is a one-story sandstone structure measuring three bays long by two bays deep in the Georgian-style. The house features a two-story galleried porch and an interior stone chimney. The farm also includes a small 1875 stone-arched bridge, a mid-19th century dairy barn, a small shed-roofed frame outbuilding which may once have housed pigs, and a 1930s frame garage.The Robert Clagett Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Sandy Hook is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 188 as of the 2010 census. Sandy Hook was briefly important as for a few years it was the end of the line for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, then under construction. This period ended with the opening of the B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing in 1837. During John Brown's 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, just 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west, across the bridge, a special train that had carried soldiers was parked at Sandy Hook, and it carried the telegraph that reporters used to send out voluminous stories. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad night watchman Patrick Higgins lived in Sandy Hook from 1853 until his death in 1915. At the time of his death he was the longest tenured employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Patrick has been written about extensively for his role in John Brown's Raid of 1859.

The B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing is a 15-acre (6.1 ha) historic site where a set of railroad bridges, originally built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, span the Potomac River between Sandy Hook, Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 14, 1978 for its significance in commerce, engineering, industry, invention, and transportation.

Harpers Ferry station is a historic railway station in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. It is currently served by Amtrak's Capitol Limited as well as MARC commuter service. Built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the station is part of the Harpers Ferry Historic District. It is a wooden frame Victorian style building, dating from 1889. It sits on buried foundations of original Harpers Ferry armory buildings.In 2007, the station was rededicated following a $2.2 million renovation, which included restoration of the station's tower.

Antietam is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 89 as of the 2010 census. It is the site of Antietam Iron Furnace Site and Antietam Village, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
