Houten railway station

Houten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦʌutə(n)] (listen)) is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht.

Oud-Wulven is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located just north of the village of Houten, and is part of that municipality.

Houten Castellum is a railway station located in Houten, Netherlands, which opened at 8 January 2001 and it is located on the Utrecht–Boxtel railway . Originally it was the southernmost point of the Houten - Houten Castellum tram line. This temporary service closed at 14 December 2008. The services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. During this time the service was operated by a tram from Hannover on loan to Nederlandse Spoorwegen, operated by HTM. After closure of the tram line due to construction of a new station and expanding of the railway to 4 tracks, the tram service was replaced by a bus service. The new station opened at 12 December 2010 and bus service ceased. All local trains call at Houten Castellum at the center platform along the inner tracks, while Intercity services and cargo trains use the outer tracks.

Fectio, known as Vechten in Old Dutch, was a Roman castellum in the province Germania Inferior established in the year 4 or 5 AD. It was located at the place where the river Vecht (Fectio) branched off from the Rhine, leading to Lake Flevo, which was later to become the Zuiderzee. This was near the modern hamlet of Vechten in the municipality Bunnik, Utrecht, Netherlands.

Schonauwen is a former castle in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located on the southern outskirts of the town of Houten, surrounded by new buildings. Until the end of the 18th century, Schonauwen was a separate heerlijkheid (fiefdom). When the country was divided into municipalities by the French, Schonauwen was added to the municipality of Houten, but it became a separate municipality in 1818. In 1857 it was merged back into Houten.The heerlijkheid and municipality covered an area of about 6.8 km2, and had about 240 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century.

Rhijnauwen is a castle, former heerlijkheid (fiefdom), and former municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It was located northwest of the village of Bunnik. The municipality existed from 1818 to 1857, when it was merged with Bunnik. It consisted of the former heerlijkheden Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen. Around 1850, it had 50 inhabitants. The name is still used to denote the small forest that separates Bunnik and Utrecht. The name is probably derived from Rhijnauwen Auen, an old word for the wet meadows along the Rhine. The estate is probably from the 13th century. The first mention of the manor Rhijnauwen dates back to 1212. The House was in the first half of the 14th century it belonged to the genus of Lichtenberg. This family was one of the most powerful families of Utrecht and had also Lichtenberg House, which was located in a place now part of the town hall in Utrecht. Rhijnauwen was officially recognized in 1536 as a manor. After the marriage of John IV of Lichtenberg Aleid Renesse came from the farmhouse in the hands of the family Van Zeeland Renesse. In 1449, the brothers Frederick and John Renesse Rudolf after the victory of Deep Holt Zweder banned from Culemborg, and in 1450 the house was on fire Rhijnauwen commissioned by the city of Utrecht. After the house has exchanged owners several times. The last private owner of the house was the family Rhijnauwen Strick van Linschoten Rhijnauwen bought in 1773. In 1919 the estate was bought by the city of Utrecht. The then owner, the Dowager Strick van Linschoten should stay there until the end of her life. On April 1, 1933 was leased to the hostel Rhijnauwen Foundation, which gave the building its current destination.

Bunnik is a railway station located in Bunnik, Netherlands. The station was opened in 1868 and is located on the Amsterdam–Arnhem railway. The station is operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The station was closed between 15 May 1938 and 28 May 1972. When it re-opened in 1972 it was moved about 1 km further west than originally.

Utrecht Lunetten is a railway station located in Utrecht, Netherlands. The station originally opened on 10 June 1874 and is located on the Utrecht–Boxtel railway and the Hilversum–Lunetten railway (via Utrecht Maliebaan). The station closed on 15 May 1932. The station was re-opened on 25 September 1980. The services are currently operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. When new the station was just an interchange station between the Utrecht - 's-Hertogenbosch line and the Hilversum - Utrecht Lunetten services. There was no entrance/exit to the station, so its sole purpose was for the interchange of these lines.

Kasteel Heemstede is a restaurant in Houten, Netherlands. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star for the periods 2003-2008 and 2011-present. The restaurant is located in the souterrain of the eponymous castle, although it was in fact an buitenplaats.GaultMillau awarded the restaurant 16 out of 20 points.Owner and head chef of Kasteel Heemstede is André van Doorn, who opened the restaurant in 2002.Restaurant Kasteel Heemstede is a member of the Les Patrons Cuisiniers.

Lunetten is a neighbourhood in the southeastern part of the city of Utrecht, that has approximately 12.000 inhabitants. It is mainly a residential area, since there is no significant industry present. Lunetten was constructed as an urban experiment mostly during the late 1970s and 1980s. It was designed and planned by a combination of students of architecture and urban planning and the then foreseen future inhabitants. A result of this was the use of a ring-road with many circular bifurcations running back onto themselves or with dead ends. In Dutch this is called a Bloemkoolwijk ("Cauliflower-neighbourhood"). This urban setup results in the whole neighbourhood becoming like a single living street, much like a distinct village within a city. Lunetten has a network of alleyways connecting the inner courtyards of the urban blocks. This creates a child-friendly neighbourhood with many playing spots. There are also many sports facilities within and around Lunetten. Lunetten is surrounded by major railroads and highways. To cope with the noise and pollution a park was created to surround and insulate the neighbourhood. Lunetten has the longest (140 meters) lightweight bridge in the world with a weight of 400 tonnes (Viaduct Nieuwe Houtenseweg). This was constructed on the A27 on the weekend of 3 and 4 March 2012.

Heemstede is a hamlet in the central Netherlands. It is located 3 km west of Houten, Utrecht. The hamlet is known for Heemstede Castle (1645). Until 1812, Heemstede was a separate heerlijkheid. Between 1818 and 1857 it was a part of Oud-Wulven, until that municipality merged with Houten. The area had 75 inhabitants around 1850.

Schalkwijk [ˈsxɑɫkʋɛik] is a small village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It consists of a small village centre on the railway line between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch and a 5 km long ribbon of farms along the small channel Schalkwijksche Wetering. The statistical district of Schalkwijk had a population of about 1650 in 2004.
