Greenwich Bay (Rhode Island)

Buttonwood Beach Historic District is a historic district bounded by Brush Neck Cove, Greenwich Bay, Cooper and Promenade Avenues in Warwick, Rhode Island. Buttonwood Beach is a bucolic neighborhood on the eastern limb of the Nausauket neck, located in the West Bay area of Warwick, Rhode Island. Buttonwoods is delimited by Nausauket and Apponaug to the west, Buttonwoods Cove to the north, Greenwich (aka Cowesett) Bay to the south and Oakland Beach to the east. Buttonwood Beach was founded as a summer colony in 1871 by the Rev. Moses Bixby of Providence's Cranston Street Baptist Church, who was looking for a place to establish a summer colony by the shore for his congregation. He envisioned a community that would be similar to Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, where the Methodists established a summer campground in 1835. Today, this coastal neighborhood on Greenwich Bay is home to people from many different religious backgrounds. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Potowomut is an isolated neighborhood and a peninsula in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is bordered by the Town of East Greenwich to the northwest, and by North Kingstown to the southeast. Greenwich Bay surrounds all other sides. Potowomut's name translates to "land of fires", the Narragansett Indian name for the neck of land.

Hopelands is a historic country estate on Wampanoag Road in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is now the campus of the Rocky Hill School, a private college preparatory school. The historic centerpiece of the estate is a Colonial Revival mansion house, whose western ell is a wood-frame structure built in 1686. This house and its associated 75-acre (30 ha) property became the center of one of Warwick's first country estates, when in 1793 a Federal-style house was built by Thomas P. Ives and Hope (Brown) Ives, to which the old building was attached. This was given extensive Colonial Revival treatment in 1885 by Moses Goddard. The estate was acquired by the Rocky Hill School in 1948. The estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Green–Bowen House is a historic house at 100 Mill Wheel Road in Warwick, Rhode Island, United States. It is a late-date stone-ender house, built c. 1715, and is the oldest surviving house of the locally historically prominent Greene family. It stands on land purchased by John Greene from local Native Americans in 1642, and was probably built by Fones Greene not long after he acquired the land in this area in the early 18th century. The house has a two-story main block, with two rooms on each floor, and its west wall and chimney are built of brick instead of stone. Shed-roof additions dating to 18th century were added abutting the west side and the rear. The property it stands on includes a 20th-century house, and a 19th-century barn and cottage.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Rocky Hill Country Day School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school located on 84 acres along the Potowomut River and Narragansett Bay in Warwick, Rhode Island. It educates in grades nursery through grade 12.

The Potowomut River is a tidal extension of the Hunt River in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It runs approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km).

Budlong Farm is an historic farmhouse in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is a 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame house, with a gambrel roof and a large central chimney. Its current entrance is asymmetrically placed on the north facade, although the original main entry was on the south side. The house was probably built sometime between 1700 and 1720 by John Budlong, whose family was one of the first to settle the area after King Philip's War. The property is a rare local example of architecture to survive from that period.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Oakland Beach is a neighborhood and beach located in the South Central area of Warwick, Rhode Island, on Greenwich Bay, a tributary of Narragansett Bay. In the late 1800s, Oakland Beach was the site of the camp ground for the six day annual training encampment of the Rhode Island Militia. Around 1895 the encampment was moved to a larger and better equipped facility at Quonset Point. This densely populated community of small cottages was developed after World War I as a summer colony, largely for nearby Providence's middle-class Irish, Greek and Italian communities. Oakland Beach reached its heyday in the 1930s when it boasted a bathing beach, boat docks and restaurants, as well as a Ferris wheel, and rail service to Providence and other nearby summer colonies. Popular local attractions included an arcade, carousel (merry go round) movie theater, bowling alley and dodgem cars, it also housed a skating rink run by the same people who ran the oldest family run skating rink in the country which replaced the one in Oakland Beach after the 1930s New England Hurricane. The New England Hurricane of 1938, however, destroyed much of Oakland Beach. The area never quite recovered, and Hurricane Carol in 1954 added to the area's destruction. Over the years, Oakland Beach has become a destination where people come to attend the many activities on the green, park by the sea wall to enjoy the beautiful vista of Greenwich Bay, kayak the scenic coves, stroll the shoreline and dine at the restaurants. The most notable being Iggy's Doughboys and Chowderhouse, Iggy's Boardwalk and also Top of the Bay (which used to be the Governor's residence). New to the area is The Beach Cafe and Pub. In the late 1980s a novelty song called Born in Oakland Beach was made which used the tune of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA. It was played on local radio stations and referenced local landmarks like Veterans Memorial High School and Rocky Point.

Chepiwanoxet is a neighborhood in Warwick, Rhode Island, with an island peninsula in Greenwich Bay, an arm of Narragansett Bay. The neighborhood straddles the Amtrak railroad lines, which lies just east of and parallel to the Post Road (US Route 1). Its boundaries are Neptune Street to the North, Alger Avenue to the South, Post Road to the West, and Greenwich Bay to the East. Chepiwanoxet Way, an underpass beneath the Amtrak lines, now serves as the only street access in and out of the neighborhood.Native Americans, who fished its island and shores, named this area between Post Road and Greenwich Bay "Chepiwanoxet." Settled as a colonial farm in early 18th century, it became a beach resort with hotel and shore dinner hall after the Chepiwanoxet railroad station opened in around 1837. Small lots were sold for summer cottages to upstate residents and for homes to workers in nearby Cowesett Hill Estates in late 19th century. Before World War I, the Gallaudet Aircraft Company built a causeway to the island for its seaplane factory. The Chepiwanoxet entrance sign states that Warwick bought the island in 1994 for a city park.

Goddard Memorial State Park is a public recreation area occupying 490 acres (200 ha) along the shores of Greenwich Cove and Greenwich Bay in Warwick, Rhode Island. The state park grounds were once the estate of Civil War officer and Rhode Island politician Robert Goddard, whose children gave the land to the state in 1927 as a memorial to their father. The park features a nine-hole golf course, an equestrian area with 18 miles (29 km) of bridle trails, swimming beach, canoeing area, picnicking facilities, game fields, and a performing arts center.

Warwick Veterans High School was a secondary school in Warwick, Rhode Island. The school building is two stories high and features eight wings of classrooms. The logo for all Vets "Hurricane" teams was a reverse-rotating hurricane symbol. School colors were blue, gold, and white. The school held grades 9–12 until 2016, when it closed due to declining enrollment and the building was converted to a junior high school. The school had an enrollment of over one thousand students, and its principal when it was converted was Gerald Habershaw. The school was opened in 1956 as a response to a booming Warwick population — the previous high schools (which came to be known as Samuel Gorton Junior High and Aldrich Junior High and also Lockwood Junior High which has been converted to condos) were too small for the large number of incoming students. In the late 1960s, the 900 wing extension was added to the school. Two additional high schools were constructed to answer Warwick's population increase, Pilgrim High School in 1962 and Toll Gate High School in 1972.

The Richard Wickes Greene House is an historic house in Warwick, Rhode Island. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in 1849, and is an excellent local example of Georgian style. Richard Wickes Greene was a ship's captain who acquired the property from the Wickes family in 1826.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
