Adamant Music School

Adamant is a small, unincorporated community in the town of Calais in Washington County, Vermont, United States, in the central part of Vermont. The village is situated on the town line between Calais to the north and East Montpelier to the south. There is no true boundary to define the village, and as such, there is great debate as to what constitutes residence. This is, however, purely theoretical as there is no legal, governmental, or commercial status associated with residence. The debate has given rise to the common aphorism that "Adamant is a state of mind".The village was originally known as Sodom from its inception prior to the mid-19th century as a granite quarry-town. Local lore tells the story of a preacher slamming his fist on the pulpit proclaiming, "I am adamant that we change the name of this town!" In 1905, residents petitioned the state legislature for a name change to "Adamant."The quarries remained an active part of the Vermont granite industry well into the mid-20th century. The small, rural village has no paved roads or traffic lights. The village center is the member-owned Adamant Co-op, a general store and post office located at the junction of Haggett, Quarry, Center and Sodom Pond Roads. Founded in 1935, it is the state's oldest co-operative.Perhaps the village's most notable inclusion is the Adamant Music School, a summer-long piano and musicology school founded in 1942. Adamant is also home to the Quarryworks Theater, a community theater set on the grounds of Adamant's largest quarry. Adamant was mentioned in the 2000 blockbuster movie What Lies Beneath starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Area code 802 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. State of Vermont. AT&T established the numbering plan area (NPA) for the entire state with one of the original area codes in October 1947 and it remains Vermont's only area code. Vermont is among the eleven states with only one area code and 802 has become a source of pride in the state.Prior to October 2021, area code 802 had telephone numbers assigned for the central office code 988. In 2020, 988 was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permit seven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.

East Montpelier () is a town in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,598 at the 2020 census.

The Center Road Culvert is a historic stone culvert on Center Road at Mallory Brook in East Montpelier, Vermont. It was built in 1899 as an early project after the establishment of the Vermont Highway Commission in 1898, and is a well-preserved example of dry-laid stone box culvert. The last major work on the culvert was performed in 1930, after it suffered damage in Vermont's devastating 1927 floods. VTrans recommended the culvert undergo preservation rather than replacement following damage from Hurricane Irene, and Mallory Brook is to be rerouted through a larger modern structure. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.

The Union Meetinghouse, also known as The Old Meeting House and the East Montpelier Center Meeting House, is a historic church on Center Road in East Montpelier, Vermont. Built in 1823–26, it is the oldest church building in the greater Montpelier area, and a well-preserved example of Federal period church architecture. It served as a union church for multiple denominations for many years, and housed the annual town meetings until 1849. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is now home to a non-denominational community congregation.

The Parley Davis House is a historic house on Center Road in East Montpelier, Vermont. Built in stages between 1795 and about 1805, it is one of the oldest buildings in the community, built by one of the first settlers of Montpelier, and served as the site of town government until 1828. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The East Village Meetinghouse, also known as the Old Brick Church, is a historic church at 55 Vermont Route 14 in East Montpelier, Vermont. Built in 1833-34, it is a fine local example of Greek Revival architecture, and has been the focal point of the historic East Village for most of its history. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

East Montpelier is a census-designated place (CDP) comprising the central village of the town of East Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population of the CDP was 80 at the 2010 census.

The Washington-7 Representative District is a one-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Washington-7 District includes all of the Washington County towns of East Montpelier and Middlesex. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The one member Washington-7 District had a population of 4,307 in that same census, 6.11% above the state average.

The Coburn Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge, carrying Coburn Road over the Winooski River in eastern East Montpelier, Vermont. Built in 1851, it is the town's only surviving 19th-century covered bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Wrightsville Reservoir is a reservoir located in Washington County, Vermont, United States, as a result of the construction of the Wrightsville Dam built from 1933 to 1935 after the Great Flood of 1927. It is located at the intersection of the municipal borders of three towns, Montpelier, Middlesex, and East Montpelier. It is a popular recreational spot in the summer, for swimming, boating, and fishing in the Montpelier area. During the July 2023 Northeastern United States floods, floodwaters reached the second highest recorded Winooski River level and threatened to spill the dam, but receded on the third day.

East Calais is an unincorporated village in the town of Calais, Washington County, Vermont, United States. The community is located along Vermont Route 14, 10.3 miles (16.6 km) northeast of Montpelier. East Calais has a post office with ZIP code 05650, which opened on April 12, 1830. The heart of the village forms the East Calais Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.
