Oakland Bay is a tidal estuarial body of water near the town of Shelton, Washington. It is connected to the larger Puget Sound via Hammersley Inlet. The community of Bay Shore, Washington was located on Oakland Bay. The major freshwater inlet is Goldsborough Creek, which runs through the town of Shelton.

The Simpson Logging Company Locomotive No. 7 (also known as "Tollie") and Peninsular Railway Caboose No. 700 are a locomotive and caboose in Shelton, Washington. Together they have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. The locomotive, plus a flatbed log car carrying several large logs, and the caboose form a train, set up appear as if just arrived from the woods, on Railroad Avenue in front of Shelton's U.S. Post Office. Both the locomotive and the caboose served the Simpson Logging Company. In 1887, Sol G. Simpson moved to Mason County, Washington with his family. He found a job laying rails and railroad ties for Port Blakely Mill Company. In 1890, he established the S. G. Simpson Company in Matlock, Washington; two of his brothers worked for the company. In 1925, the company opened the Reed sawmill, in Shelton, Washington. "Tollie", a Shay locomotive, was built in 1924 by the Lima Machine Works. Caboose No. 700 was built in Shelton by the Peninsular Railway in the 1920s, which it served until 1936. After that it served the Simpson Logging Company. It had a large side door like a box-car would, and was used to transport supplies to logging camps. It was retired in 1965 and was brought to Shelton in 1983. The caboose's interior was remodeled to serve as the Shelton Mason County Chamber of Commerce. The two cars are linked together and are situated in downtown Shelton between 2nd and 3rd Street on a narrow parcel of land that belonged to the Logging Company railroad. Both the locomotive as well as the caboose have sustained their original integrity and are positioned on the original right of way for the railroad.

Shelton is a city in and the county seat of Mason County, Washington, United States. Shelton is the westernmost city on Puget Sound. The population was 10,371 at the 2020 census. Shelton has a council–manager form of government and was the last city in Washington to use a mayor–commission form of government.

Bay Shore, Washington was a small community located on Oakland Bay in southern Puget Sound, not far away from the present city of Shelton, Washington.

Shelton High School is a senior high school located in Shelton, Washington. Shelton High School is a class 2-A high school and was restructured starting with the 2004–2005 school year to be a Grade 10-12 High School. More than 1600 students, grades 9–12, are enrolled at SHS. Built in 1975, it replaced Irene S. Reed High School, Shelton's first high school.

Washington's 35th legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. It covers all of Mason County, and parts of Thurston and Kitsap counties. The district's legislators are state senator Drew MacEwen (R) and state representatives Dan Griffey (R; position 1) and Travis Couture (R; position 2). The previous Senator, Tim Sheldon stated in March 2022 that he did not intend to run for reelection in the next cycle. MacEwen, who previously served as Representative in Position 2, ran for and was elected in November 2022 to replace Sheldon in the Senate.

Hammersley Inlet, in southwestern Puget Sound in the U.S. state of Washington, is an arm of water opening north of Arcadia and leading to the city of Shelton and Oakland Bay. Hammersley Inlet is also known as Big Skookum.

Agate is a small community in the state of Washington, United States. It is located on southern Puget Sound on the north side of the entrance to Hammersley Inlet.

Amelia is a ghost town in Mason County, in the U.S. state of Washington.A post office called Amelia was established in 1895, and remained in operation until 1901. Amelia Edmonds, an early postmaster, gave the community her name.

Kamilche is an unincorporated community in Mason County, Washington, United States. Primarily a farm area, Kamilche is also the home to the Squaxin Indian Tribe. It is at the crossroads of U.S. Route 101 and State Route 108. Kamilche sits at the edge of Little Skookum Inlet, a finger waterway off Puget Sound.
