Guayama, Puerto Rico

Guayama barrio-pueblo is a barrio and the administrative center (seat) of Guayama, a municipality of Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 16,891. As was customary in Spain, in Puerto Rico, the municipality has a barrio called pueblo which contains a central plaza, the municipal buildings (city hall), and a Catholic church. Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza every year.

The Eleuterio Derkes Grammar School (Spanish: Escuela Derkes) is a historic school building in Guayama, Puerto Rico. It was built in 1908, during a period when schools were gaining importance as civic institutions in Puerto Rico. Its simplified Neoclassical design emphasized this shift, and it became a prototype for a generation of school construction on the island. It additionally signifies a transition in construction technologies from wood to concrete. In 1987, architect Jorge Rigau observed that the building had survived in a nearly unaltered state, a rarity among schools of its era.It was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Ingenio Azucarero Vives (English: Vives Sugar Plant), also known as Hacienda Vives, is a historic sugar mill complex with ruins of windmill and a processing building, in Barrio Machete of Guayama, in southern Puerto Rico. Sugarcane was ground by the windmill and the extracted juice was further processed in the processing building, by slaves. A slave uprising occurred here in the early 1800s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.It is believed to have been constructed by 1828.In 1976, the site was found to be significant as the only example of early industrial architecture and the only windmill in Puerto Rico.It was documented by the Historic American Engineering Record program, with photographs by Jack Boucher. Modern photographs show that the complex has been restored.

Guayama Convention Center is a convention center in Guayama, Puerto Rico. It is one of the main performing arts and sports venues in Puerto Rico, especially in the south and southeast areas of the island. The center was built in 2000 and has a capacity of 2700.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Antonio de Padua (English: Parish Church of Saint Anthony of Padua) is a historic, Roman Catholic parish church in Guayama, Puerto Rico. The parish was erected in 1736 and the first church building completed no later than 1775. The original appearance of the building is unknown, but some of the eighteenth century walls may survive in the present structure. The building was rebuilt twice in the nineteenth century and the present appearance dates from 1874. It takes an overall Romanesque form, while the details exhibit the eclecticism that characterized much Puerto Rican architecture in the later 1800s.The church was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Casa Cautiño is a house museum in Guayama, Puerto Rico. The museum collection, administered by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, include works of art, wood carvings, sculptures and furniture built by Puerto Rican cabinetmakers for the Cautiño family. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Caimital is a barrio in the municipality of Guayama, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,124.

The Cayey Bridge, also known as Puente de Cayey, is an iron lateral lattice girder bridge in Puerto Rico that was built in 1891. It brings Puerto Rico Highway 15 over the Guamaní River. It is an extremely rare example of such a bridge in the United States or its territories. Puerto Rico has the only bridges in the United States or its territories built with this technology.The bridge was fabricated by the Belgian firm Nicrisse & Decluve. The girder bridge has two independent spans.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

The Guamaní River (Spanish: Río Guamaní) is a river of Guayama, Puerto Rico. In 1928, the Public Works department of Puerto Rico spent approximately $183,000 on a risk mitigation project at Guamaní River. There is a 30-meter truss bridge over the Guamaní River in Guayama, which was built in 1936, under a Franklin D. Roosevelt New Deal program.

Guásimas is a barrio in the municipality of Arroyo, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,030.
