Thornton Viaduct

Thornton is a village within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England. It lies to the west of Bradford, and together with neighbouring Allerton, has total resident population of 15,004, increasing to 17,276 at the 2011 Census. Its most famous residents were the Brontës. The preserved centre of the village retains the character of a typical Pennine village, with stone built houses with stone flagged roofs. The surrounding areas consist of more modern housing, still isolated from the rest of the city of Bradford by green fields.

Thornton railway station was a station on the Keighley-Queensbury section of the Queensbury Lines which ran between Keighley, Bradford and Halifax via Queensbury. The station served the village of Thornton, West Yorkshire, England from 1878 to 1955. The station had an island platform and was very close to the 300-yard (270 m) 20 arch Thornton viaduct which spans the Pinch Beck valley. It opened for passengers in 1878 and closed in 1955. The viaduct, closed off for many years, was reopened in 2008 as part of the Great Northern Walking Trail after it had been safety checked and the former railway bed was sealed. No other parts of the former large station building remain. The site is occupied by Thornton Primary School (previously Royd Mount Middle School) since 1977. The original goods platform and a large retaining wall are still visible and have been incorporated into the school's grounds design. The viaduct is a grade II listed building, and is unusual in that it has an 'S' shape to accommodate the natural contours of the valley. It is in a picturesque location that has remained unchanged since its construction. The final trip by train over the viaduct was in 1966, by a goods train.The original 'Thornton' platform sign was a large concrete affair, some 16 feet (5 m) long. This is on display at the Industrial Museum at Eccleshill on the outskirts of the city of Bradford.

The station was unusual due to its triangular shape, and at its opening the only other examples of this arrangement were Ambergate station in Derbyshire and Earlestown in Lancashire; since then Shipley station, also in West Yorkshire, has gained platforms on all three sides. Of the stations on the Queensbury lines, this was the most ambitious.

Thornton and Allerton (population 18,000 - 2021 ward profile) is a ward within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in the county of West Yorkshire, England, named after the villages of Thornton and Allerton around which it is drawn. The population has increased considerably over the past 20 years, with an increase of nearly a fifth (3,000) from the 2001 UK census. The ward has also urbanised considerably, particularly in Allerton, which has contributed to a notable swing from Conservative to Labour in the last decade, and can be described as primarily suburban. As well as the villages of Thornton and Allerton, the ward includes the smaller village of Sandy Lane, hamlets of Keelham and Little Egypt, and neighbourhoods of Stony Lane, Broom Hill, School Green and Leaventhorpe.

Trinity Academy Bradford (formerly Queensbury School and then Queensbury Academy) is an 11–16 mixed, secondary school located in Queensbury (near Bradford) in West Yorkshire, England. Previously a foundation school administered by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, in September 2016 Queensbury School converted to academy status and was renamed Queensbury Academy. It was then sponsored by the Feversham Education Trust. It adopted its present name after becoming part of The Trinity Multi Academy Trust in February 2021.

The local residents of the suburb pronounce it as Ollerton, 'Ol' rather than 'Al'.

Wilsden is a village and civil parish in west Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England. Wilsden is 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Bradford and is close to the Aire Valley and the nearby villages of Denholme, Cullingworth, Harden, Cottingley and Allerton. Wilsden re-acquired civil parish status in 2004. The 2001 census revealed a population of 3,697, increasing to 4,807 at the 2011 Census.
