Bovey Tracey

Bovey Tracey Town Hall is a municipal building in Town Hall Place, Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. The town hall, which is the meeting place of Bovey Tracey Town Council, is a Grade II listed building.

The Harbourne River is a river in Devon in England. Its estuary is known as Bow Creek, and flows into the River Dart near Stoke Gabriel. The river rises on the slopes of Gripper's Hill on Dean Moor on Dartmoor. From the source it flows generally south east, under the A38 road, to the village of Harberton. There it turns south, then east through Harbertonford to the hamlet of Bow near Ashprington. Below Bow the river is tidal, and becomes Bow Creek. Two miles below Bow, the estuary joins the Dart. The hamlet of Tuckenhay lies on the south bank of Bow Creek. There was a history of milling on the river. From the late 18th century there was a woollen mill at Harbertonford, fed by a leat from a weir upstream of the village. Until flood defence works were completed in 2002, the river caused periodic flooding at Harbertonford.The river gives its name to Harbourne Blue, a goat's cheese made near Ashprington.

Indio (anciently Indehoe, Indiho, etc.) in the parish of Bovey Tracey in Devon, is an historic estate. The present large mansion house, known as Indio House is a grade II listed building rebuilt in 1850, situated about 1/2 mile south of Bovey Tracey Church, on the opposite side of the River Bovey. According to the Devon historian Pole (d.1635) it was originally a priory, however research from 1840 onwards has suggested it was more likely merely a grange farm, a possession of St John’s Hospital, Bridgwater, Somerset, from 1216.

Bovey Tracey Association Football Club is a football club based in Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. They are currently members of the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East and play at Mill Marsh Park.

Bovey railway station sometimes known as Bovey for Ilsington was on the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway at Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. The station was built on the west side of the town, opening on 4 July 1866. Two platforms were provided, with the main building and goods shed being on the town side of the line. The station closed to passengers after the last train on 28 February 1959, with goods trains continuing until 6 July 1970. Some of the line is now a road by-pass carrying the A382 road, but a short distance to the north the road diverges and the line is now a woodland walk through the Parke estate, owned by The National Trust. The station building still stands adjacent to the by-pass and is used as the Bovey Tracey Heritage Trust Centre. The goods shed is used as a store by the Dartmoor National Park Authority.

Brimley Halt was a railway station open in 1928 by the Great Western Railway (GWR) to serve the village of Brimley that lies between Bovey Tracey and Ilsington in South Devon, England. It had a single platform and was located on a curved section of track without a passing loop or sidings. A special train to Bovey Tracey visited Brimley Halt on 5 July 1970, its last known use by a passenger train. The track had been lifted by 8 September 1975. The site of the station was destroyed by the construction of a new A382 road along the course of the trackbed.

The battle of Bovey Heath took place on 9 January 1646 at Bovey Tracey and Bovey Heath (about 10 miles (16 km) south-west of Exeter in Devon, England) during the First English Civil War. A Parliamentarian cavalry detachment under the command of Oliver Cromwell surprised and routed the Lord Wentworth's Royalist camp. After a series of losses for the Royalists in the southwest of England, they had retreated to Exeter and beyond. The Parliamentarian New Model Army besieged Exeter, and when a Royalist army was raised to try to relieve the city, the Parliamentarian commander, Sir Thomas Fairfax launched a preemptive strike. He first sent Cromwell to attack the cavalry lodged at Bovey Heath, where they were able to rout the Royalists who were not prepared for an attack. Wentworth and most of his leading commanders were able to escape, but Wentworth was stripped of command of the Royalist army in the West, which passed to the Lord Hopton.

Bovey Heath is a 32 hectare (50 acre) area of heathland between Bovey Tracey and Heathfield in south Devon, England. Although primarily heathland habitat, the site has some wet mature oak woodland, and is home to rare species such as the Dartford warbler, European stonechat, European nightjar and the narrow headed ant. The reserve has been a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1989. It became a Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserve in 2002 and a Local Nature Reserve in 2003.

Hennock is a village and civil parish about 3 miles west north west of Chudleigh, in the Teignbridge district, in the county of Devon, England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 1747. The parish touches Bovey Tracey, Kingsteignton, Christow, Chudleigh and Trusham.

Heathfield is an industrial estate in the Teignbridge district of Devon, England. It is located 2 miles south east of Bovey Tracey and is next to the A382 and A38 roads. In 2011 it had a population of 1832.

Chudleigh Knighton Heath, near Chudleigh Knighton, Devon is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so designated because of its rare lowland heath vegetation. It is a habitat for many rare species including the ant, Formica exsecta. This is one of only two wild colonies in England, the other being at Bovey Heath.The site is leased by the Devon Wildlife Trust from Sibelco formerly WBB Minerals. The Trust have created several ponds noted for 12 breeding species of dragonfly including the scarce Keeled Skimmer.The Heath was once the village's main football pitch and was the venue for many sports days for Chudleigh Knighton Church of England Primary School. However the pitch fell into disrepair and was unsuitable for sporting activities, so the School opened its own private sports field opposite to the village play park. The football pitch is now used by local dog walkers, the football posts are still standing today, though they are a little rusty.

Hawkmoor Hospital, originally known as Hawkmoor County Sanatorium, was a specialist hospital near Bovey Tracey in Devon, founded in 1913 as a pulmonary tuberculosis sanatorium as part of a network of such facilities, instigated by the Public Health (Tuberculosis Regulations) 1912. From 1948, the hospital catered for patients with a range of chest ailments (including tuberculosis), as well as chest surgery, and mental disability patients. From 1973, the facility dealt solely with mental health problems until its closure in 1987.
