Christ Church, Freemantle

Freemantle is a suburb and electoral ward in Southampton, England. There are similarly named places in Hampshire: notably Henry II's hunting lodge in Kingsclere; an area near Hannington; and Freemantle Common in Bitterne. These were formerly thought to be French names meaning "cold cloak", but are now known to derive from the word fromental, meaning a wheat-field.

St Mark's Church of England School, formerly known as St Mark's Church of England Primary School, is a Church of England all-through school in Shirley, Southampton, England.St Mark's was a primary school but was demolished and renovated by Morgan Sindall to form an all-through school. The project started in 2020. The all-through school was opened by Debbie Sellin, the Bishop of Southampton, in 2022 and was fully completed in 2023. It made history by becoming Southampton's first all-through school. St Mark's is operated under the auspices of the Diocese of Winchester. Rated "Good" by Ofsted, it is currently educating students from ages 4 to 16. The school's catchment area includes Shirley, St Mary's, and other areas of Southampton.

Millbrook railway station is a small station in the Millbrook area of Southampton, England. It is served mainly by the Salisbury to Romsey stopping service. This service runs once per hour in each direction. It is 80 miles 11 chains (129.0 km) down the line from London Waterloo. The station is managed by South Western Railway. The platforms face the slow lines only, there are no platforms for the fast lines. Millbrook Freightliner Terminal is located next to the station on the up side. A car terminal and rail access to Southampton's Western Docks can be seen from the down side of the station. In summer 2021, works were undertaken to improve the footbridge that connects the island platform with Millbrook Road West.

Hamble College of Air Training was a flight training centre in Hampshire, England. During the late 1950s it became apparent that there was going to be a shortage of ex military pilots who would be available to crew British civil aircraft. The two (then) state owned airline corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Aviation, proposed a flying school based loosely on the Royal Air Force's officer training college at Cranwell. The site chosen was a small airfield at Hamble, Hampshire in the Southern United Kingdom, used at the time by Air Service Training and Southampton University Air Squadron. The first course of cadets began training in 1960. The college continued operations until the mid-1980s: British Airways (the merged BOAC and BEA) announced the closure in 1982 and in 1984 the land was sold for development and the equipment disposed of. For the first few years of operation the course lasted two years: later courses were shortened to eighteen months. Cadets were accepted equally from the ranks of school leavers and university graduates: previous flying experience was not a requirement. Following fifteen weeks of ground study, ab initio and, later, advanced flying training commenced. Ground training included aerodynamics, astronavigation, meteorology, propulsion and many other disciplines. Flying training commenced after fifteen weeks, initially on De Havilland Chipmunk then Piper Cherokee aircraft, progressing to twin engine experience on Piper Apaches and later Beechcraft Barons. A graduate would leave the college with a British commercial pilot's licence and a "frozen" airline transport pilot's licence, which could be converted into a full ATPL after further examinations and having accumulated the requisite flying hours.

Shirley is a broad district and a former village on the western side of Southampton, England. Shirley's main roles are retailing and residential. It is the most important suburban shopping area in the west of the city. Housing is a mixture of council houses in the centre of the district surrounded by private housing, with larger suburban houses concentrated in Upper Shirley. Shirley is separated from Highfield by Southampton Common, a large green public space.

Unity 101 (previously known as Unity 24) is a community radio station based in Southampton, England, a voluntary organisation catering to the Asian and ethnic minority communities in the area. The station was previously only on the air for one month a year, but on 8 December 2005 began a five-year licence to broadcast permanently.The show's weekday lineup consists predominantly of Indian music in Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English, with a 'Community Hour' of discussion from 3pm to 4pm. On the weekends the station hosts music and other forms of culture (such as literature) from a greater variety of ethnicities, currently including Chinese, Afghani, Polish and music of black origin. On weekdays between 2pm and 3pm the station hosts radio shows from local colleges, Taunton's College, Southampton City College, Regent's Park College, Barton Peveril College and Totton College

Shirley Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Southampton. The main church building is situated along Church Street in the district of Shirley. Founded in 1852, the church is a member of the Baptist Union of Great Britain.

The Shirley Towers Fire occurred in a tower block on 6 April 2010 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. Two firefighters were killed when a fire developed and spread from the ninth floor. The investigations and inquiries following the fire led to changes in fire safety rules nationally, particularly the regulations around electrical wiring.

King George V Graving Dock, also known as No. 7 Dry Dock, is a former dry dock situated in Southampton's Western Docks. It was designed by F.E. Wentworth-Shields and constructed by John Mowlem & Company and Edmund Nuttall Sons & Company. It was formally opened by King George V and Queen Mary on 26 July 1933 although the final construction work was only complete the following year. At the time of construction it was the largest graving dock in the world, a status it retained for nearly thirty years.

Southampton Central railway station is a main line station serving the city of Southampton in Hampshire, southern England. It is on the South West Main Line and also serves the Wessex Main Line and the West Coastway Line. The station is approached from the London direction by passing through Southampton Tunnel and is 79 miles 19 chains (127.5 km) measured from London Waterloo.The station is managed by South Western Railway who operate the majority of services, including frequent trains to London Waterloo, Bournemouth and Portsmouth Harbour. Other operators are CrossCountry (providing services to Oxford, Birmingham New Street, Manchester Piccadilly and Newcastle), Great Western Railway (to Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central) and Southern, which links Southampton to London Victoria, East Croydon, Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

SS Shieldhall is a preserved steamship that operates from Southampton. She is one of the last reciprocating steam engined ships built, using technology that dated back to the last quarter of the 19th century and which was obsolete at the time of her construction. She spent her working life as one of the "Clyde sludge boats", making regular trips from Shieldhall in Glasgow, Scotland, down the River Clyde and Firth of Clyde past the Isle of Arran, to dump treated sewage sludge at sea. These steamships had a tradition, dating back to the First World War, of taking organised parties of passengers on their trips during the summer. SS Shieldhall has been preserved and the accommodation is again being put to good use for cruises.

Regents Park is a suburb of Southampton in England. A large house and grounds, after which the area is named, formerly occupied the land with the current Regents Park Road following the route of the Carriage Drive. A former gatehouse or lodge which once guarded the entrance to this still stands at the junction Bard of Regents Park Road, Waterhouse Lane and St Edmunds Road. Victorian "villa" style houses occupying the Northern part of Regents Park Road represent the initial phase of redevelopment following demolition of the large house. Later Victorian and then Edwardian properties followed before much of the Southern part of the road was given over to 1930s style semi-detached and detached housing. This phase of development eventually extended West to King George's Avenue and North to Oakley Road and South to what is now the main Millbrook Road. It is this area which is now generally known as Regents Park, although the description is a loose one and is also taken to include the housing between Oakley Road and Shirley High Street / Romsey Road, which is also the location of the former Regents Park girls school, now Regents Park Community College. The area now consists mainly of private housing, and it is sometimes seen as being part of neighbouring Millbrook or Shirley. Millbrook neighbours Regents Park to the west, with Shirley to the north and Freemantle to the east. Southampton's container port and Southampton Water are to the south. The area is home to the headquarters of the Southampton City Scout District.
