CHLY (101.7 MHz) is a non-commercial college radio station in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Primarily funded by students of Vancouver Island University's Nanaimo campus, the station is also supported by donations and memberships from the community, as well as sponsorship and grants from local businesses. CHLY-FM is run by the Radio Malaspina Society, an incorporated non-profit society. CHLY is a Class A station with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 1,300 watts (3,000 watts maximum). From its transmitter tower on Cottle Hill, CHLY's broadcast signal covers much of the west coast of Nainamo Island, from Parksville to the north, to Ladysmith to the south, as well as Gabriola Island and Valdes Island.

It was closed in 2008. Opened on the historic Wellington Public School Site, Mount Benson Elementary was the oldest operating school site in British Columbia.

Dover Bay Secondary School is the largest public high school in Nanaimo, British Columbia. It was founded in 1992. In 2002, Dover Bay had 1860 students. In 2011, it was the recipient of the Staples (Canada) Recycle for Education award for its excellence in being eco-responsible, and in turn constructed a computer lab valued at $50,000. In 2012, students at Dover Bay brought the school to media attention when it won the Einstruction Flip Your Classroom Makeover Contest for its Gangnam Style - inspired music video.

The Pacific Biological Station (acronym: PBS) is a Research station in Departure Bay, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1908 (1908), with the Rev. George William Taylor as its first director and sole employee, it is the oldest fisheries research centre on the Pacific coast. Operated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the station forms a network with eight other scientific facilities.Together with the St. Andrew's Biological Station in New Brunswick, the Pacific Biological Station was designated a National Historic Event in 2011.

Buttertubs Marsh is a bird sanctuary in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Located in the middle of the city of Nanaimo, the marsh covers approximately 100 acres (40 hectares). Within this is the 46 acre (18.7 hectare) Buttertubs Marsh Conservation Area, owned by the Nature Trust of British Columbia. The marsh is man-made and is home to great blue herons, mallards, Canada geese, ring-necked ducks, hooded mergansers, American wigeons, violet-green swallows and red-winged blackbirds. The sanctuary is Vancouver Island's only documented breeding site of American bittern. Approximately half of the wetland area is privately owned, and efforts are underway to purchase the remaining land to protect it against development. Some residential development has already taken place on the eastern edge of the site.

Departure Bay is a bay in central Nanaimo, British Columbia, on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The surrounding neighbourhood is also referred to as "Departure Bay" —once a settlement of its own, it was amalgamated into the City of Nanaimo in the 1970s.
