Maasmechelen (Dutch pronunciation: [maːsˈmɛxələ(n)]; Limburgish: Mechele) is a municipality located on the Meuse in the Belgian province of Limburg. It comprises the former municipalities of Mechelen-aan-de-Maas, Vucht, Leut, Meeswijk, Uikhoven, Eisden, Opgrimbie, Boorsem, and Kotem. As a result of both Maasmechelen's location near the border and its coalmining history, quite a few of its current inhabitants are of Dutch, German, Polish or Mediterranean (mainly Italian) origin.

The Mechelen incident of 10 January 1940, also known as the Mechelen affair, took place in Belgium during the Phoney War in the first stages of World War II. A German aircraft with an officer on board carrying the plans for Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), the German attack on the Low Countries, crash-landed in neutral Belgium near Vucht in the modern-day municipality of Maasmechelen within the Province of Limburg. This prompted an immediate crisis in the Low Countries and amidst the French and British authorities, whom the Belgians notified of their discovery; however, the crisis abated relatively quickly once the dates mentioned in the plans passed without incident. It has been argued that the incident led to a major change in the German attack plan, but this hypothesis has also been disputed.

Dilsen-Stokkem (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdɪlsə(n) ˈstɔkɛm]; Limburgish: Dilse-Stokkem; French: Dilsen-Stockem) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On 1 January 2018, Dilsen-Stokkem had a total population of 20,454. The total area is 65.61 km² which gives a population density of 312 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Dilsen, Elen, Lanklaar, Rotem, and Stokkem.

As (Dutch pronunciation: [ɑs] ) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1, 2006, As had a total population of 7,497. The total area is 22.07 km2 which gives a population density of 340 inhabitants per km2.

Oud-Rekem is a village in the Lanaken municipality of the Limburg province of Belgium. The village is considered one of the most authentic villages of Belgium. Since 1994, it is protected as a monument.

Ommerstein Castle (Dutch: Kasteel van Ommerstein) is a castle in the village of Rotem in the municipality of Dilsen-Stokkem, province of Limburg, Belgium. The history of the castle goes back to the 13th century, but most of the present Neo-classical building dates from the 18th century, although the donjon survives from earlier. The surrounding park is distinguished by its possession of a number of giant sequoias and cedars of Lebanon, including one believed to be the thickest in Belgium. There are also several ponds round the castle.

Zutendaal Air Base (ICAO: EBSL) is a reserve Belgian Air Component base, located 4 mi (6.4 km) east-southeast of Genk (Limburg), approximately 50 mi (80 km) east-northeast of Brussels.

Opglabbeek (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɔpˌxlɑbeːk]; Limburgish: Glabbek) is a village, former municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. In 2018, Opglabbeek had a total population of 10,332. The total area is 24.98 km2.The municipality consisted of the following communities: Opglabbeek proper, Nieuwe Kempen, and Louwel. Effective 1 January 2019, Opglabbeek and Meeuwen-Gruitrode were merged into the new municipality of Oudsbergen.

The Opglabbeek Formation is a geologic formation in the subsurface of the eastern part of Belgian Limburg. The heterogeneous formation consists of clay and sand that was deposited lagoonally and fluvially during the early Selandian (Middle Paleocene, about 60 million years old). The formation is named after the town of Opglabbeek in Limburg.The Opglabbeek Formation is subdivided into two members: the Opoeteren Member (red clay with layers of lignite) and the Eisden Member (fine sand with crags).The Opglabbeek Formation's thickness ranges between 25 metres (82 ft) and 60 metres (200 ft), reaching its greatest thickness as it abuts the Roer Valley Graben. It lies stratigraphically on top of the Houthem Formation (early Paleocene calcareous sandstone). It is the lateral equivalent of the Hainin Formation. On top of it lies the Heers Formation (Middle Paleocene sands and marls). The Opglabbeek Formation is part of the Hesbaye Group and can be correlated with parts of the Landen Formation of adjacent areas in the southern Netherlands.

Berg, often called Berg aan de Maas, is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Stein, and lies about 6 km northwest of Geleen. The village was first mentioned in 1294-1295 as "apud Berge", and means "hill on the Maas". Berg aan de Maas was home to 468 people in 1840.Berg is situated on the right bank of the river Meuse, Maas in Dutch. The opposite, left bank of the Meuse is Belgian territory, municipality Dilsen-Stokkem. There is a ferry between Berg and Dilsen-Stokkem.

Urmond is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Stein. The village was first mentioned in 1153 as Ouermunte. The current name means "mouth of the Ur", however the Ur has later moved to village. Urmond developed on the higher bank of the Maas. In 1400, it became part of the Duchy of Jülich.The Old St Martinus Church was built between 1791 and 1793. The medieval tower was placed in 1841. The cemetery is artificially heightened. In 1695, a Dutch Reformed church was built in Urmond which is exceptional in Limburg.Urmond was home to 600 people in 1840. Urmond was a separate municipality until 1982, when it was merged with Stein.

Stein (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈstɛin] , Limburgish: [ˈstɛjn]) is a municipality and a town in the southeastern Netherlands. The municipality had a population of 24,875 in 2021 and covers an area of 22.80 km2 (8.80 sq mi) of which 1.72 km2 (0.66 sq mi) is water. The municipality of Stein makes part of the region of South Limburg and lies between the city of Geleen in the east and Beek in the southeast, and lies furthermore west of interchange Kerensheide and the chemical industries of Chemelot. To the west lies the Belgian border, across the Meuse river. In comparison to other cities and villages in the area, Stein is fairly big. It is also the capital city of the municipality with the same name. It has i.a. three Roman Catholic churches, an abandoned mediaeval castle, and a port to the Juliana Canal which used to be the second largest inland port in all of Europe. On 29 October 2009, the shopping mall of Stein suffered a severe fire. As a result of the calamity, the town subsequently lost 40 shops, 2 banks, 1 restaurant and 6 houses. The adjacent, iconic, 11-story apartment building 'De Stevel', remained intact.
