The Geul (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣøːl], Limburgish: [ˈʝøːl]; German: Göhl [ˈɡøːl]; French: la Gueule) is a river in Belgium and in the Netherlands, where it is a right-bank tributary to the river Meuse.

Bunde (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbʏndə]; Limburgish: Bung [ˈbɵŋ]) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Meerssen, about 2 km northwest of Meerssen itself.

It comprises the former municipalities of Mechelen-aan-de-Maas, Vucht, Leut, Meeswijk, Uikhoven, Eisden, Opgrimbie, Boorsem, and Kotem. As a result of both Maasmechelen's location near the border and its coalmining history, quite a few of its current inhabitants are of Dutch, German, Polish or Mediterranean (mainly Italian) origin.

Borgharen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌbɔr(ə)xˈɦaːrə(n)]; Limburgish: Hare [ˈɦaːʀə]) is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Maastricht, and lies about 3 km north of Maastricht. Until 1970, it was a separate municipality. In 2001, Borgharen had 1814 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.34 km², and contained 732 residences.

The Mechelen incident of 10 January 1940, also known as the Mechelen affair, took place in Belgium during the Phoney War in the first stages of World War II. A German aircraft with an officer on board carrying the plans for Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), the German attack on the Low Countries, crash-landed in neutral Belgium near Vucht in the modern-day municipality of Maasmechelen within the Province of Limburg. This prompted an immediate crisis in the Low Countries and amidst the French and British authorities, whom the Belgians notified of their discovery; however, the crisis abated relatively quickly once the dates mentioned in the plans passed without incident. It has been argued that the incident led to a major change in the German attack plan, but this hypothesis has also been disputed.

Maastricht Noord (lit. 'Maastricht North') is a railway station in the north of Maastricht, the Netherlands. Construction of the station started in March 2011 and after a few delays it opened on 17 November 2013 on the Maastricht–Aachen railway, which is part of the Heuvellandlijn. The station features 360 car parking spaces and park and ride facilities with connections to the centre of Maastricht.

Bethlehem Castle is a castle in Maastricht, in the south of the Netherlands. It was built in the 12th century. It is one of the oldest castles in the Netherlands. Nowadays it serves as a hotel and as part of the Maastricht Hotel Management School.

Meerssen (Dutch: [ˈmeːrsə(n)] (listen); Limburgish: Meersje [ˈmeːʀʃə]) is a town and a municipality in southeastern Netherlands.

Meerssen railway station is located in Meerssen, the Netherlands. The station opened on 23 October 1853 on the Maastricht–Aachen railway. The original station building was enlarged in 1900.

The siege of Maastricht took place in April–May 1748 during the War of the Austrian Succession. A French force under the overall command of Maurice de Saxe besieged and captured the Dutch barrier fortress of Maastricht in the final few months of the campaign in the Low Countries. After a relatively long siege the garrison of Maastricht capitulated and marched out with the honours of war. Maastricht was returned along with France's conquests in the Austrian Netherlands according to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle signed in 1748. Among the defenders were the Austro-Walloon Regiment of Los Rios, commanded by its Colonel Jean Charles Joseph, Count of Merode, Marquis of Deynze ; Charles, 5th Duke of Arenberg (Jean Charles' brother-in-law)
