Sphinx Observatory

Jungfraujoch is an underground railway station situated near the Jungfraujoch, in the canton of Valais, a few metres from the border with the canton of Bern. At 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) above sea level, it is the terminus of the Jungfrau Railway and the highest railway station in Switzerland and Europe. The Jungfrau Railway runs from Kleine Scheidegg in the Bernese Oberland, through the Jungfrau Tunnel (inside the Eiger and Mönch) and crosses the border between the two cantons shortly before the terminus. The station is located east of the Jungfraujoch, less than 300 metres away, below the Sphinx ridge. The Jungfraujoch itself is a snow saddle constituting the lowest point of the ridge between the Jungfrau and the Mönch. A complex of tunnels connects the railway station to the Top of Europe building, overlooking the Aletsch Glacier on the south side, and an elevator to the summit of the Sphinx, the peak overlooking the saddle from the east. At the Sphinx are enclosed and open viewing platforms, with views over both sides of the Jungfraujoch and the surrounding peaks. A scientific observatory, the Sphinx Observatory, is also located here.Also accessed via the tunnels is the Ice Palace, a series of ice caverns beneath the glacier, and the Alpine Sensation, which presents a display on the tourist development of the Alps and the history of the Jungfrau Railway.Administratively, the station is situated in the municipality of Fieschertal in the canton of Valais, albeit very close to the border with the municipality of Lauterbrunnen in the canton of Bern. The cantonal border follows the watershed across the Jungfraujoch above the station.The station is served by trains of the Jungfrau railway, which run from Kleine Scheidegg, where they connect with services from Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Grindelwald via the Bernese Oberland railway and the Wengernalp railway. The Jungfraujoch (German: lit. "maiden saddle") is a saddle connecting two major 4000ers of the Bernese Alps: the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It lies at an elevation of 3,463 metres (11,362 ft) above sea level and is directly overlooked by the rocky prominence of the Sphinx. The Jungfraujoch is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch. The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) is the highest in Europe. It lies east of the saddle, below the Sphinx station, and is connected to the Top of Europe building, which includes several panoramic restaurants, shops, exhibitions, and a post office. Several tunnels lead outside, where secured hiking trails on the crevassed glacier can be followed, in particular to the Mönchsjoch Hut. The normal route to the Jungfrau and Mönch starts from there. The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, provides an additional viewing platform at a height of 3,572 metres (11,719 ft), the second-highest in Switzerland. It can be reached by an elevator from the Jungfraujoch. The observatory houses one of the Global Atmosphere Watch's atmospheric research stations. The Jungfraujoch radio relay station, which is not accessible to the public, is installed west of the Jungfraujoch, on the Jungfrau ridge. It is Europe's highest radio relay station.

The Jungfraujoch radio relay station (German: Richtfunkstation Jungfraujoch) is a former Swisscom microwave radio relay station atop the Jungfraujoch, the mountain ridge between Mönch and Jungfrau, in the Swiss Alps. At an altitude of 3,705 meters (12,156 ft) above sea level, it was Europe's highest radio relay station.Built in 1954, it was the first radio station to allow radio relay connections across the Alps. It has been used to transmit telephone and TV signals, and connected Germany with Italy in the international radio relay network. With the diminishing commercial importance of microwave radio relays due to the increasing availability of satellite and fiber-optic cable links, the station is no longer of practical importance, and Swisscom decided in 2009 to cease operating the station in 2013.The station building is accessed from the Jungfraujoch railway station by way of a 600 meters (2,000 ft) long tunnel through glacier and rock. The Jungfraubahnen anticipated to be able to reuse the station building, which provides an excellent view to both sides of the ridge, for tourism purposes after the end of radio transmissions in 2013.

The Mönch (German pronunciation: [ˈmœnç] , German: "monk") at 4,110 metres (13,480 ft) is a mountain in the Bernese Alps, in Switzerland. Together with the Eiger and the Jungfrau, it forms a highly recognisable group of mountains, visible from far away. The Mönch lies on the border between the cantons of Valais and Bern, and forms part of a mountain ridge between the Jungfrau and Jungfraujoch to the west, and the Eiger to the east. It is west of Mönchsjoch, a pass at 3,650 metres (11,980 ft), Mönchsjoch Hut, and north of the Jungfraufirn and Ewigschneefäld, two affluents of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The north side of the Mönch forms a step wall above the Lauterbrunnen valley. The Jungfrau railway tunnel runs right under the summit, at an elevation of approximately 3,300 metres (10,830 ft). The summit was first climbed on record on 15 August 1857 by Christian Almer, Christian Kaufmann (1831-1861), Ulrich Kaufmann and Sigismund Porges.

The Eiger Glacier (German: Eigergletscher) is a glacier situated on the north-west side of the Eiger in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. The glacier is within the municipality of Lauterbrunnen in the canton of Bern.In 1973 it had an area of 2.13 km2 (0.82 sq mi), and a length of 2.6 km (1.6 mi). By 2005 its length had reduced to 2.5 km.

The Mönchsjoch Hut (German: Mönchsjochhütte) is a mountain hut located in the Bernese Alps in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. At an altitude of 3,658 metres (12,001 ft) it is the highest staffed hut in Switzerland. The hut lies just above the Obers Mönchsjoch (3,627 m), between Mönch and Trugberg, on the upper Aletsch Glacier. It is used for the ascents of Jungfrau, Mönch and other peaks of the region.

The Wengen Jungfrau is a summit of the Bernese Alps, north of the Jungfrau on the border between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais. Because of its small prominence it was included in the enlarged list of alpine four-thousanders.

The Rottalhorn (3,972 m) is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, located on the border between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais. It lies 600 m south of the Jungfrau, between the small valley of the Rottal and the Jungfraufirn (part of the Aletsch Glacier).

The Ulrichshorn (3,925 m) is a mountain of the Swiss Pennine Alps, overlooking Saas-Fee in the canton of Valais. It is located north of the Nadelhorn, in the Mischabel range, which lies between the Mattertal and the Saastal.

The Jungfrau (YOONG-frow, German pronunciation: [ˈjʊŋˌfʁaʊ̯] , transl. "maiden, virgin"), at 4,158 meters (13,642 ft) is one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall of mountains overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau, one of the most distinctive sights of the Swiss Alps. The summit was first reached on August 3, 1811, by the Meyer brothers of Aarau and two chamois hunters from Valais. The ascent followed a long expedition over the glaciers and high passes of the Bernese Alps. It was not until 1865 that a more direct route on the northern side was opened. The construction of the Jungfrau Railway in the early 20th century, which connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, made the area one of the most-visited places in the Alps. Along with the Aletsch Glacier to the south, the Jungfrau is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

The Kranzberg (3,742 m) is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, overlooking the Aletsch Glacier in the Swiss canton of Valais, close to the border with the canton of Bern. Its massif separates two glaciers: the Grosser Aletschfirn and the Jungfraufirn, both part of the Aletsch Glacier. A prominent unnamed secondary summit (3,666 m) is located south-east of the main peak. Debris accumulating on both sides of the mountain form one of the two important supraglacial moraines of the Aletsch Glacier (see picture on the top right of the article).

The Trugberg is a mountain in the Bernese Alps, located south of the Mönch in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is located above the Konkordiaplatz where the névé of the Jungfraufirn on the west side and the Ewigschneefeld on the east side converge to form the Aletsch Glacier. Debris accumulating on both sides of the mountain form one of the two important supraglacial moraines of the Aletsch Glacier. During their ascent of the Jungfrau in 1841, a group of explorers including Pierre Jean Édouard Desor and Louis Agassiz for a while thought that the Trugberg, hiding the Jungfrau from sight, was their destination. Eventually, they realized their error and decided to name the mountain Trugberg, meaning Deceitful Mountain.The Trugberg was first climbed 13 July 1871 by Dr. Emil Burckardt from Basel, with the two local guides Peter Egger and Peter Schlegel. The route they took was by the east flank.
