Penallta Colliery was a coal mine, located close to Hengoed in the Rhymney Valley in the South Wales Valleys. A coal mine which in 1935 held the European record for coal wound in a 24-hour period, it is now the site of an original redevelopment project which will make use of the former pit head buildings.

Gelligaer (Welsh: Gelli-gaer Welsh pronunciation: [ˌɡɛɬɪˈɡaːɨr]) is a community in the County Borough of Caerphilly, Wales, in the Rhymney River valley. As well as the village of Gelligaer, the community also includes the small towns of Hengoed and Ystrad Mynach. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 18,408.

Penpedairheol is a village situated in the Rhymney Valleys, South Wales. It is located between Pengam, Gelligaer, Bargoed, Hengoed and Cefn Hengoed in the centre of Caerphilly borough, in the historic boundaries of Glamorgan. The translation of its names means the head of four roads. Penpedairheol is frequently known as Cascade. Penpedairheol is split up into Dyffryn Park (most houses on this estate being built in the 1970s), Old Cascade, Forest Park, Bryn Siriol (homes on this estate being built in the 1990s), Westbury (homes on this estate being built in the 2000s), New Roman Gate housing estate (homes on this estate being built 2009/2010), and Glyn-Gaer (known as 'White City'), which is the location of Glyn-Gaer Primary School. Although the village is surrounded by what some locals would refer to as some 'rough' parts of other villages and towns close by (such as Gelligaer, Pengam and Bargoed), Penpedairheol is seen as a safe environment and as a nice place to live. This is backed up objectively where Bargoed is ranked one of the most deprived areas in the Caerphilly borough, with parts of Pengam, Hengoed and Gelligaer indexed fairly high in doing poorly in community safety.

St Anne's Church, Cefn Hengoed is a disused Church in Wales church in Cefn Hengoed, Caerphilly in South Wales. The church dates from 1939 and was founded by Reverend John Owen Williams, who had started a cottage Sunday school in Cefn Hengoed in 1931. A Second World War air raid shelter is located at the side of the church.The church required extra funds for a refurbishment in 2010. By 2015, the church was defunct, and together with some adjoining land, was offered for sale with a starting price of £150,000.

Cefn Hengoed is a small village in the centre of Caerphilly borough, within the historic boundaries of Glamorganshire. Bordering the larger village of Hengoed, Cefn Hengoed contains the local Derwendeg primary school. Derwendeg primary school has recently celebrated its 90th birthday. Cefn Hengoed is a village in Caerphilly County Borough and within the Gelligaer Community Council Parish area. Cefn Hengoed has a local public house called The Crosskeys which is situated facing the opening of Lansbury Avenue and the Lindsay Constitutional Club for adults. Frequenting these Public houses is local hard nut, Darren James Jack. Darren has lived in Cefn Hengoed all his life, since he was 11.There is also a youth center in Cefn Hengoed founded by a former Community Councilor Rob Thomas with other local residents. Locals say that it was founded to dissuade local youths from causing disruption after a spate of complaints about unruly behaviour in the bus shelters. Caerphilly Councils answer at the time was to knock down the bus shelters leaving local youngsters with nowhere to gather. Caerphilly council now officially recognises the value of the youth centre and provide trained youth workers to facilitate its youth sessions. Cefn Hengoed Ladies' Choir was formed in 1947. St Anne's Church was formerly located on Hengoed Road, but is now closed.

Ystrad Mynach is a town in the Caerphilly County Borough, within the ancient county of Glamorgan, Wales, and is 5 mi (8.0 km) north of the town of Caerphilly. The urban area has a population of 19,204, and stands in the Rhymney Valley. Before the Industrial Revolution and the coming of coal mining in the South Wales Coalfield the valley was rural and farmed. It lies in the community of Gelligaer.

Ystrad Mynach railway station is a railway station serving the town of Ystrad Mynach, south Wales. It is a stop on the Rhymney Line of the Valley Lines network. The nearest bus interchange is Blackwood Interchange, 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From 2020, the rail linc bus (901) that links with the train no longer operated. It operated to Maesycwmmer, Pontllanfraith, and ended at Blackwood.

Hengoed () is a village on the west side of the Rhymney Valley - between Ystrad Mynach to the south and Cefn Hengoed to the north. Across the valley it looks towards Maesycwmmer. The village is in the county borough of Caerphilly, in the traditional county of Glamorgan, Wales. The name literally means 'old wood' in the Welsh language. The electoral ward of Hengoed includes the villages of Hengoed and Cefn Hengoed and a part of Tir-y-Berth in the north west. The ward population was recorded at 5,548 in the 2011 census, an increase of 10% over the previous 10 years (2001 = 5,046), due in part to several new-build housing developments in the ward between 2001 and 2011.

Lewis Girls' Comprehensive School is a secondary school in Wales. The Lewis Girls School stands at the border between Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire divided by the Rhymney River which act as the school fields boundary. The School was established subsequent to its partner school, Lewis Boys School, situated in Pengam. The origins of the schools come from the bequest of Sir Edward Lewis to set up the Boys school, as Girls became pupils and numbers swelled the division and separate educational provision evolved. In 1973 the school amalgamated with the Ystrad Mynach Secondary School for Girls to form the present comprehensive school in Ystrad Mynach, Wales. The Ystrad Mynach School, built in the late 1950s was primarily established for female students but has recently begun to allow male students from local comprehensive schools to enroll in its sixth form and study subjects under Lewis Girls' teaching staff.

Pengam railway station is situated in Pengam on the Rhymney Line of the Valley Lines network in South Wales. It is also the nearest station to the town of Blackwood and is the 2nd busiest station on the Rhymney Line, after Caerphilly.

The College Ystrad Mynach is a former college of further education based in Ystrad Mynach in Caerphilly county borough, Wales. It had over 13,000 students ranging from school leavers to adult mature students. It taught mainly vocational courses from entry level to Degree (in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the University of South Wales). In 2013, Ystrad Mynach College merged with Coleg Morgannwg to become Coleg y Cymoedd.

The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence (Welsh: Canolfan Rhagoriaeth Chwaraeon Brwrdeistaf Sirol Caerffili) was opened in May 2014. The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, Wales, is a sports facility located in and run by Caerphilly County Borough Council, South Wales. The Centre's facilities include a FIFA 2 star 3G Football Pitch, an IRB 22 ratified 3G Rugby Pitch, 2 conference rooms, a strength and conditioning room, medical & first aid rooms, a community room, 2 grandstands; 1 on each pitch and 2 balconies overlooking both pitches for performance analysis purposes. Both grandstands have seating for 500 spectators. The office space on the 1st floor hosts the Newport Gwent Dragons coaching & management staff and some regional Welsh Rugby Union staff are also based at the centre.The Newport Gwent Dragons use the facility as a training base, along with local educational establishment Coleg y Cymoedd.The Centre was opened with the help and support of the Welsh Rugby Union, Welsh Football Trust, Sport Wales & Welsh Government funding. The principal contractor who built the site was Heron Bros Ltd of Northern Ireland.
