The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence (Welsh: Canolfan Rhagoriaeth Chwaraeon Brwrdeistaf Sirol Caerffili) was opened in May 2014. The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, Wales, is a sports facility located in and run by Caerphilly County Borough Council, South Wales. The Centre's facilities include a FIFA 2 star 3G Football Pitch, an IRB 22 ratified 3G Rugby Pitch, 2 conference rooms, a strength and conditioning room, medical & first aid rooms, a community room, 2 grandstands; 1 on each pitch and 2 balconies overlooking both pitches for performance analysis purposes. Both grandstands have seating for 500 spectators. The office space on the 1st floor hosts the Newport Gwent Dragons coaching & management staff and some regional Welsh Rugby Union staff are also based at the centre.The Newport Gwent Dragons use the facility as a training base, along with local educational establishment Coleg y Cymoedd.The Centre was opened with the help and support of the Welsh Rugby Union, Welsh Football Trust, Sport Wales & Welsh Government funding. The principal contractor who built the site was Heron Bros Ltd of Northern Ireland.

The College Ystrad Mynach is a former college of further education based in Ystrad Mynach in Caerphilly county borough, Wales. It had over 13,000 students ranging from school leavers to adult mature students. It taught mainly vocational courses from entry level to Degree (in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the University of South Wales). In 2013, Ystrad Mynach College merged with Coleg Morgannwg to become Coleg y Cymoedd.

Lewis Girls' Comprehensive School is a secondary school in Wales. The Lewis Girls School stands at the border between Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire divided by the Rhymney River which act as the school fields boundary. The School was established subsequent to its partner school, Lewis Boys School, situated in Pengam. The origins of the schools come from the bequest of Sir Edward Lewis to set up the Boys school, as Girls became pupils and numbers swelled the division and separate educational provision evolved. In 1973 the school amalgamated with the Ystrad Mynach Secondary School for Girls to form the present comprehensive school in Ystrad Mynach, Wales. The Ystrad Mynach School, built in the late 1950s was primarily established for female students but has recently begun to allow male students from local comprehensive schools to enroll in its sixth form and study subjects under Lewis Girls' teaching staff.

The nearest bus interchange is Blackwood Interchange, 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From 2020, the rail linc bus (901) that links with the train no longer operated. It operated to Maesycwmmer, Pontllanfraith, and ended at Blackwood.

The urban area has a population of 19,204, and stands in the Rhymney Valley. Before the Industrial Revolution and the coming of coal mining in the South Wales Coalfield the valley was rural and farmed. It lies in the community of Gelligaer.

Hengoed () is a village on the west side of the Rhymney Valley - between Ystrad Mynach to the south and Cefn Hengoed to the north. Across the valley it looks towards Maesycwmmer. The village is in the county borough of Caerphilly, in the traditional county of Glamorgan, Wales. The name literally means 'old wood' in the Welsh language. The electoral ward of Hengoed includes the villages of Hengoed and Cefn Hengoed and a part of Tir-y-Berth in the north west. The ward population was recorded at 5,548 in the 2011 census, an increase of 10% over the previous 10 years (2001 = 5,046), due in part to several new-build housing developments in the ward between 2001 and 2011.
