Glennwood Estates (Decatur)

The Ponce de Leon Court Historic District consists of a single cul-de-sac located immediately east of downtown Decatur, Georgia. The street is accessed off of East Ponce de Leon Avenue, a historic road that runs east from Atlanta, Georgia through Decatur. Historic Decatur Cemetery is located to the north, and affluent Glynnwood Estates, developed in 1927, and Glenwood school border Ponce de Leon Court on the east. Ponce de Leon Court is a local historic district in the city of Decatur, and was listed in the Georgia Register of Historic Places in June 2010. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 2, 2011. The single-street district includes approximately 26 parcels, and was based on a subdivision plat developed by John L. Womack in the 1920s. Womack reportedly wanted homes on this street to remind him of the tropics, so he planted both palm trees and banana trees. The palm trees flourished, but the banana trees died. In the twenty-first century, residents successfully reintroduced banana trees on the north end of the street thanks to a change in the microclimate. The Womack family still owned property on the court when it was designated a historic district. The closely spaced homes on the narrow street are within walking distance of downtown Decatur, and were constructed in an era when developments did not plan adequately for the automobile. The sense of scale and detail created a strong sense of community, and resulted in this street being recognized as a unique asset in Decatur. Ponce de Leon Court primarily includes 1920s-era American Craftsman bungalows, but also has a few historic multi-family homes. Both the single and multi-family structures, as well as historic palm trees, have remained largely intact from the era when they were built. The street consists entirely of homes. There are no churches, businesses, or apartment blocks.

Sycamore Street is both a street and a historic neighborhood located in the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. The street is known for its homes, which are some of the largest historic homes in Decatur. It is also "book-ended” by MARTA stations, and the MARTA track runs underneath the western end of Sycamore Street. The neighborhood includes historic homes, historic churches, townhouses and adaptive reuse condominiums. Sycamore Street is accessed from Church St. to the west and East Ponce De Leon Ave. to the northeast. The street previously continued further west past Church St. However, this segment of the street became part of Decatur Square and is no longer accessible for vehicular traffic. The Sycamore Street neighborhood is bounded by East Ponce de Leon Ave. to the north; the railroad tracks to the south; the Avondale MARTA station to the east; and downtown Decatur to the west. Other roads in the community include Glenn St., a segment of Mountainview St., Hillyer Pl., Sycamore Pl., Sycamore Square, Pate St., and a segment of East Howard Ave. Village Walk Dr and Village Ct. fall with the overall boundaries of the community, but are not part of historic Sycamore Street. In addition, Sycamore Street becomes Sycamore Dr. north of Ponce de Leon Ave., but this segment is considered part of the Decatur Heights community.

The DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) is the public library system of DeKalb County, Georgia in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The library system headquarters are at the Darro C. Willey Administrative Offices in Decatur.Its collection includes over 850,000 books and over 19,000 downloadable e-books; collections of over 400 magazines, academic and scientific journals, and newspapers; and audiovisual materials including videotapes, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs. Library patrons can also access a variety of databases and online references through the GALILEO (GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online) system. The library currently operates 22 branches located throughout the county, with construction of two additional branches planned.DeKalb County Public Library offers literacy services, such as Adult Basic Education (ABE) which helps adults learn basic skills in math, reading, and language development. English as a second language (ESL) classes are held at the branches and provide advanced instruction in the speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and syntax of English for speakers of other languages. The library offers online resources and learning tools including access to databases such as learningexpress. The library has test preparations resources for exams such as GED, ASVAB and many others. Literacy outreach programs include Project Horizons, Project Reap and Health Literacy. As of 2018, the library served a population of over 745,000, of whom almost 196,000 had library cards. As of fiscal year 2019 the library system a staff of 239 employees, and a budget of over $19.5 million.

Avondale is a train station in Decatur, Georgia. It is on the Blue Line of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system. The station is at-grade and has two island platforms, one for each direction. The center two tracks are not normally used for through service. Because of these middle tracks, it is not uncommon for trains to be bound for Avondale, having passengers change trains at Avondale. A limited number of Green Line trains originate and terminate at Avondale rather than at their normal terminus at Edgewood / Candler Park, though these trains bypass East Lake and Decatur.Green Line service is expected to be extended to Avondale full-time when the platform at Bankhead station is expanded to accommodate 8-car trains, in order to increase service on the East-West trunk line.This station opened on June 30, 1979; this was the original eastern terminus of the Blue Line. This station has parking (823 spaces) available on E. College Avenue. This station mainly serves Avondale Estates (although technically not located in the city limits) and Decatur Heights, as well as The City of Clarkston and The City of Tucker and Communities in: Scottdale, Northlake & North Decatur. Bus service is provided at this station to Clifton Springs Health Center, GRTA/Panola Park & Ride, DeKalb Lou Walker Senior Center, North DeKalb DeKalb Mall, DeKalb Farmers Market, Avondale Estates, Tucker, City of Clarkson, Mountain Industrial Business District, DeKalb Veterans Administration Clinic and DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services Center (DFACS). East of the station is Avondale Yard, a train yard used to service, clean, store, and test the fleet of rolling stock it services. Adjacent to the yard is Laredo Bus Facility.

Decatur station is a transit station in Decatur, Georgia, on the Blue Line of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system. This station opened on June 30, 1979. In 2005, a major renovation of the Church Street entrance to the station was begun that was completed in 2006. The redesign was intended to allow the station to fit in better with the stores and restaurants in the Decatur square. It has 2 tracks and side platforms that serve each track. It is one of the only stations on the Blue Line (besides those located in downtown Atlanta) that is completely underground. Decatur mainly serves the City of Decatur and South Dekalb County. It provides access to Downtown Decatur-Historic Shopping and Dining District, Atlanta's Dekalb Conventional Visitor's Bureau, Decatur Main Library, Dekalb County Court House, Decatur City Hall, Devry University, Holiday Inn Plaza Decatur and the Emory-Cliff Shuttle. Bus service is provided at this station to: South Dekalb Mall, North Dekalb Mall, Agnes Scott College, Georgia State University- Decatur, Emory Hospital-Decatur, North Dekalb Health Center, Decatur Main Post Office, Virginia-Highlands and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Green Line service, which currently terminates at Edgewood/Candler Park station, is expected to be extended to Avondale with stops at East Lake and Decatur when the platform at Bankhead is expanded to accommodate 8-car trains. This is being done to increase the levels of service on MARTA's east–west trunk line.

The name "Pythagoras Lodge No. 41, Free and Accepted Masons" is used by the National Register of Historic Places when referring to a historic building located in Decatur, Georgia. The building is also known as Pythagoras Masonic Temple and occasionally known as Decatur Masonic Temple. Built in 1924, the building is a work of William J. Sayward (1875-1945), an architect who was a member of the Masonic lodge, and who partnered with William A. Edwards in the firm Edwards and Sayward. It was designed and built in Beaux Arts architecture style.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It was deemed significant for its architecture and for the social/community history of the lodge.The building was constructed as a Masonic hall by Pythagoras Lodge No. 41, Free and Accepted Masons, one of several Masonic Lodges which meet in Decatur. The Lodge received its charter in 1844, and has functioned continuously since then.

Decatur Heights is a historic community located in the northeast corner of the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. It includes residences, churches and a nature preserve. During much of the 20th Century, this community primarily consisted modest homes. However, in the 1990s it became a neighborhood where “tear downs” were increasingly common. This has resulted in the demolition of the modest cottages the community was historically known for. Decatur Heights is accessed off of East Ponce de Leon Avenue to the south, Church Street to the north and Winn Way to the east. The approximate boundaries of the community are Glennwood Estates to the west; Winn Way to the east; the Dekalb Medical Center to the north; Church Street to the northeast; and Ponce de Leon Avenue to the south. The Avondale MARTA station is located immediately south of the community. The community includes several distinct neighborhoods, each constructed in different decades. (Decatur Heights is commonly referred to as the community's name, but it is also the name of the oldest neighborhood within the community.) The neighborhoods located with the City of Decatur include Decatur Heights, Sycamore Ridge and Sycamore Station. The Springdale Heights neighborhood is also part of the Decatur Heights community, but is located in unincorporated DeKalb County. However, the City of Decatur began investigating annexation of Springdale Heights in 2008. The heart of the community and primary north-south road is Sycamore Drive. The geographic heart of the historic neighborhood is generally considered to be Sycamore Drive and Fairview Street. A country store, which was originally constructed as a residence, was located at the southwest corner of this intersection. The store was also torn down and replaced with a single family home.

The Thomas Jefferson statue is a bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson which was formerly located on a bench next to the Old DeKalb County Courthouse in Decatur, Georgia. The statue depicts Jefferson writing the United States Declaration of Independence and was donated to the city by a private citizen to honor U.S. senator Paul Coverdell, who died in 2000. Following a rally during the George Floyd protests on June 17, 2020, it was announced that the statue would be removed, citing the fact that Jefferson was a slave-owner who owned over 600 slaves and fathered several children with Sally Hemings, his sister-in-law and a slave he owned. On the morning of June 19, 2020 the statue was removed at the request of the donor "to protect it from damage." This came several days after the removal of the DeKalb County Confederate Monument, an obelisk on the courthouse grounds that honored the Lost Cause of the Confederacy.

The DeKalb County Confederate Monument is a Confederate memorial that formerly stood in Decatur, Georgia, United States. The 30-foot stone obelisk was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy near the old county courthouse in 1908.

Eddie's Attic is a music club in Decatur, Georgia. Founded in 1992 by Eddie Owen, it is a venue for both local musical talent and musicians of some acclaim who often got their start in the Atlanta area. Artists who developed their fanbase at Eddie's Attic include Shawn Mullins, Sugarland, Michelle Malone, Justin Bieber, disappear fear, The Civil Wars, John Mayer and Crystal Bowersox. Eddie's Attic hosts a weekly open mic contest in which performers from around the United States compete; the winners advance to the semi-annual Open Mic Shootout, with a $1,000 grand prize at stake. Past winners of the Shootout include Atlanta's John Mayer, Shawn Mullins, Clay Cook, Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, Jennifer Daniels, The Brilliant Inventions and Tyler Childers. The contest has been hosted by Matt Arnett since 2012. In March 2002, Owen sold the business to Todd Van Sickle, (then-husband of Sugarland member Jennifer Nettles) who in turn sold the business to Bob Ephlin in June 2005. In November 2011, Ephlin sold the club to concert promoter Alex Cooley and his business partner Dave Mattingly.On May 11, 2012, founder and namesake Eddie Owen, who had remained the club's talent booker, was fired from his position and now hosts live music at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, Georgia.
