Electoral district of Thornlie

The East Metropolitan Region is a multi-member electoral region of the Western Australian Legislative Council, located in the eastern and south-eastern suburbs of Perth. It was created by the Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987, and became effective on 22 May 1989 with five members who had been elected at the 1989 state election three months earlier. At the 2008 election, it was increased to six members. Legislation to abolish the region, along with all other Western Australian Electoral Regions was passed in November 2021, with the 2025 state election to use a single state-wide electorate of 37 members.

Thornlie Senior High School is an independent public co-educational high day school in the City of Gosnells, located off Ovens Road in the Perth suburb of Thornlie, Western Australia. The school was established in 1971 and caters for students from Years 7 to Year 12. It is located in the Canning educational district and has had enrolments as high as 1200 students.The school caters for students in years 7 to 12. The school offers a specialist Rugby program. As well as preparing students for university—the school includes a comprehensive vocational education and training pathway for students in years 11 and 12. In 2013, Prime Minister Julia Gillard held Community Cabinet at the high school. The event was booked out, and a small group of animal rights activists held a peaceful protest outside the event.Enrolments at the school have been relatively stable with around 1100 students. However—between 2009–2013—student numbers dropped below 1000 due to changes in enrolment ages.

Thornlie is a large residential suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south-east of the city's central business district. It is a part of the City of Gosnells local government area. The Canning River runs through the northern side of the suburb. Since the 1950s the suburb has developed in approximately five stages; north-east Thornlie (1950s–60s), south Thornlie (1970s–80s), Crestwood (1970s), Castle Glen (1980s) and Forest Lakes (1980s to present).

Maddington railway station is on the Transperth network. It is located on the Armadale Line, 17.7 kilometres from Perth Station serving the suburb of Maddington.

Kenwick Pioneer Cemetery is located in Kenwick, Western Australia adjacent to Albany Highway. It is part of the 1.2 hectares (3 acres) of land donated by Wallace Bickley for a school for the children of the Canning in 1863. In 1865 a rammed earth building with shingle roof was constructed by convicts. Kenwick School, sometimes referred to as Canning School, opened with six pupils and was the district's only school for 20 years. The school, with accommodation for a school teacher and police constable, served as school, courthouse, church, post office and social centre for many years.The first meeting of the Canning Roads Board met in the school room in 1870. Members were W.L. Gibbs, E. Powell, T. Buckingham Jnr, J. White, E.M. Marsh, F. Watts, and F. Bird.A church, St Michael and All Angels, was built on a site next to the school and served the district until the end of the century. The school closed in 1896 and in 1900 the school and church were demolished. Only the cemetery remains. Over 200 people were buried at the cemetery during its use, however few grave stones remain.

Thornlie railway station is a temporarily closed railway station on the Transperth network. It was the terminus of the Thornlie line, a spur of the Armadale Line, seventeen kilometres (11 mi) from Perth Station serving the suburb of Thornlie, Western Australia. Under construction is the Thornlie-Cockburn Link which will link to Cockburn Central railway station along the Mandurah line via two new stations, Nicholson Road railway station and Ranford Road railway station.

Maddington is a suburb 20 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, within the City of Gosnells local government area. Maddington is a mixed-use suburb containing major residential, retail and industrial sections as well as some semi-rural areas.Unusual amongst the surrounding suburbs Maddington still retains several vineyards and orchards from when the locality was used for agricultural purposes. Maddington has a railway station and like numerous other centres, has been engaging in transit-oriented development planning.

Huntingdale is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Gosnells local government area, which suggested the name of the suburb in 1974 as it was used by local developers as a promotional name. It is largely a residential suburb with associated schools and small businesses, mainly existing to service local residents. Homes in the area include a section of older residences constructed mainly in the 1970s, while there was significant new development from the 1990s onward in the southern portion of Huntingdale. There are some remaining pockets of semi-rural land comprising remnants of horticultural and chicken-farming enterprises, but in the early 2000s these were fast being taken over for new residential developments.

Kenwick railway station is located on the Transperth network. It is located on the Armadale Line, 15.8 kilometres from Perth Station serving the suburb of Kenwick. The station has been closed since 20 November 2023 as the Armadale line has been temporarily shut down for construction works.

The Brixton Street Wetlands is an environmentally significant wetland area in the city of Perth, Western Australia. The wetlands are located in the suburb of Kenwick, in the south-east of the city not far from the foot of the Darling Scarp. The Brixton Street Wetlands occupies 126 hectares (310 acres) adjoining urban residential developments, schools and remnant semi-rural properties in an area which is rapidly urbanising. Roe Highway, a major transport artery, runs along one boundary of the wetlands, together with a parallel railway line. The wetlands contain a huge number of plant species for such a small area, some of which are rare and endangered. Over 400 plant species, comprising some 20% of the flora species of the Perth area, can be found in the wetlands. Of these, about 80 flowering plants are considered endangered and are not commonly found on the Swan Coastal Plain on which Perth is located, and the plant communities located here are in fact the last substantial wetland plant communities on the plain's claypans. Four of the species are classified as Declared Rare Flora, including Purdie's donkey orchid (Diuris purdiei). Fauna include frogs, snakes and insects, but the wetlands are especially important as a habitat for the rare southern brown bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus), often known by its Nyoongar Aboriginal name of quenda.The wetlands were entered into A Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia in 1992 (recorded there as the Brixton Street Swamps), and were placed on the Register of the National Estate of the Australian Heritage Commission on 21 November 2000.

Southern River College is an independent public co-educational high day school in the City of Gosnells, located on Southern River Road in Gosnells, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The school was established in 1976 as Gosnells Senior High School (renamed in 2003) and has an attendance of approximately 900 students from Year 7 to Year 12. It became an Independent Public School in 2015. The catchment area for the school is Gosnells, Huntingdale and Southern River. Feeder schools include Gosnells, Ashburton Drive, Seaforth, Huntingdale, Wirrabirra and Southern River Primary Schools.

The City of Gosnells is a local government area in the southeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, located northwest of Armadale and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of 128 square kilometres (49.42 sq mi), a portion of which is state forest rising into the Darling Scarp to the east, and had a population of approximately 118,000 at the 2016 Census. The largest activity centre in the City is the Central Maddington shopping centre. District centres exist in the Gosnells town centre and Thornlie.
