Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 217 was a scheduled passenger flight between Baku and Aktau, Kazakhstan that crashed into the Caspian Sea at ca. 22:40 on 23 December 2005. The flight was operated by an Antonov An-140.

Nardaran Fortress (Azerbaijani: Nardaran qalası, Persian: قلعه نارداران) is a historical and architectural monument located in the Nardaran settlement of the Sabunçu district in Baku. The fortress has been registered as a monument of global significance by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2001, the Nardaran Fortress, along with other Caspian defense structures, was included in UNESCO's Tentative List. The Nardaran Fortress was built during the time of the Shirvanshahs and consists of fortress walls enclosing a square-shaped courtyard and a cylindrical tower located at the center of the courtyard. Local stone was used in the construction of the fortress.

Nardaran is a settlement and municipality on the Abşeron Peninsula in Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 8,300. Located 25 kilometers northeast of central Baku, it is politically part of the Baku city-subdivision and treated as a suburb. Unlike most of the rest of the country, which is religiously liberal, Nardaran is a center of conservative Shi'a Islam and pro-Iranian sentiment in Azerbaijan. Nardaran's name comes from Persian: nar (pomegranate)نار + daran (trees) داران, i.e. "place with pomegranate trees". The town is the site of a 14th-century castle, featuring a round tower approximately 12.5 meters high. During Soviet rule, the town was known as a center for growing flowers. Since Azerbaijan's independence, the economy has dwindled and the town is reputed for its caviar poachers.

Maştağa (Mashtagha) is a settlement and municipality in Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 42,196. According to the popular historical manuscripts, the inhabitants of the village are the descendants of an ancient nomadic Turkish tribe which defeated and brought down Cyrus the Great and settled down in Baku during the 5th-6th centuries.

Shaghan Castle is one of the 12th - 13th century Absheron castles located in Shaghan settlement. As a result of a strong earthquake in 1841, most of the castle was destroyed. Currently, only one tower exists. The castle was included in the list of immovable historical and cultural monuments of national importance by decision No. 132 issued by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 2, 2001. In 2001, the Shaghan fortress was included in the UNESCO Reserve list along with other Caspian coastal fortifications.
