Somerville Journal Building

The Bow Street Historic District encompasses a mixed 19th-century commercial-residential in the Union Square area of Somerville, Massachusetts. It covers a part of the west side of Union Square that saw significant development during the city's growth in the 19th century, and has remained well-preserved since then. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

P.A.'s Lounge is a live music venue in Somerville, Massachusetts, located near Union Square at 345 Somerville Ave. The venue's name derives from its original popularity as a club frequented by Portuguese immigrants (the letters P and A standing for Portuguese-American). P.A.'s then became a Portuguese seafood restaurant before re-opening as a live music venue and bar in the fall of 2002. In 2019, the owners rebranded the club's name to Union Tavern.Since its reopening, it has become known for appearances by such performers such as Thurston Moore, Drug Rug, Mary Lou Lord, Erin Hasley, Steven Tyler, Steve Shelley, Iarla O'Halloran, Nobunny, Tunnel of Love, Glenn Jones, Eugene Mirman, Yar Laakso, Stephen Brodsky, Guy Paquin, Micah Blue Smaldone, JD Banjer, Jay Reatard, Colin Boyd, Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, Hannah Judson, Janey Tallarida, Elf Power, Jens Lekman and many others. While many of the acts booked could be described as "indie", the venue is host to a wide variety of performers and bands in an intimate, informal environment.

The A. L. Lovejoy House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The three story wood frame Second Empire house was built in the early 1870s for Alvan Lovejoy, a Boston "fancy goods" dealer who probably commuted using either the street car or steam rail that served Union Square. The house has a typical Second Empire mansard roof clad in polychrome slate. Windows are decorated with hoods, and there are decorative brackets on the front entry porch, the roof cornice, and the roof of the projecting front bay.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Union Square is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of Somerville, Massachusetts. It is centered on Union Square proper, which is located at the intersection of Washington Street, Webster Avenue, and Somerville Avenue. The name "Union Square" comes from the square having been used as a recruitment and mustering site for the Union Army in the American Civil War. A plaque commemorating the mustering site sits at the southwest corner of the square between Somerville Avenue and Washington Street, and the Prospect Hill Monument is located several blocks away atop Prospect Hill. Union Square is now the commercial center of a primarily residential neighborhood with many restaurants, bars and neighborhood stores. As the oldest and largest commercial area in the city, Union Square is home to a number of community institutions, including the Somerville Police headquarters, Somerville Community Access Television (SCATV), and Boston Free Radio.

The Robert Munroe House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The modest side-hall Greek Revival house was built c. 1849 for Robert Munroe, a Boston grain dealer who was an early resident of Prospect Hill (Munroe Street is named for him). The house has a full-width front porch with Ionic columns that wraps around to the right side of the house. The front entry is surrounded by sidelight and transom windows, and flanked by pilasters.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Grandview is a historic apartment hotel at 82 Munroe Street in Somerville, Massachusetts. This type of building was not uncommon in the city at the time of its 1896 construction. This building affords commanding views of the Boston area from its site near the top of Prospect Hill, and has well-preserved Colonial Revival styling. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Louville Niles House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in 1890, and is one of the city's finest Queen Anne Victorian houses. The house was designed by Edwin K. Blankie, an MIT graduate and local builder. The building has irregular massing with numerous gable and roof lines. Its most prominent feature is a round projecting corner bay which is topped by a conical roof with copper finial.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Louville V. Niles House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. This 2.5-story wood-frame house was built in 1890 by Louville Niles, a developer and Boston merchant. It is one of the last houses built in the main development phase of the Prospect Hill area. The building has a roughly rectangular massing, with several projecting sections and gables on the roof line, and a decorative chimney top. The front porch has a shed roof on top of spindlework and turned posts.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The house at 42 Vinal Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts is a well-preserved Shingle style house. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, roughly square in shape, with a cross-gable roof. The roof line of the front-facing gable extends downward to the first floor on the right, sheltering a porch on the building's right front. It is stylistically a very pure execution of the Shingle style, with most of the building clad in shingles, except very simple trim elements. It was built about 1895, when the Prospect Hill area was a fashionable residential area with ready access to streetcars providing access to Boston for commuters.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Hollander Blocks are a pair of historic apartment houses in Somerville, Massachusetts. The two adjacent buildings were constructed in the early 1890s by Clarence T. Hollander on land that had been subdivided in the 1870s, and purchased by his father as an investment. The properties (one with 10 units, the other 12) stand out in a neighborhood otherwise dominated by single family residences.The buildings were listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
