Caldwell County Courthouse Historic District

The Caldwell County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located in Lockhart, Texas, United States. The courthouse was built in 1894 to replace the existing courthouse, which was too small for the growing county. The courthouse was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1976 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property of the Caldwell County Courthouse Historic District on January 3, 1978.The courthouse was built in the Second Empire architectural style, with the design often attributed to Alfred Giles; however, recent research indicates the building was designed by Henry E.M. Guidon, who eventually became partners with Giles. The courthouse is nearly identical to the courthouse in Goliad County, Texas, as it was built from the same Guidon plans. The exterior of the three-story courthouse is built with cream-colored limestone and red sandstone. The central clock tower houses a four-faced Seth Thomas Clock Company clock and a 900-pound bell. The mansard roof of the courthouse is characteristic of Second Empire design. The exterior has been featured in the films What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and Waiting for Guffman (1996).

The Battle of Plum Creek was a clash between allied Tonkawa, militia, and Rangers of the Republic of Texas and a huge Comanche war party under Chief Buffalo Hump, which took place near Lockhart, Texas, on August 12, 1840, following the Great Raid of 1840 as the Comanche war party returned to west Texas.

It is part of the Lockhart Independent School District located in central Caldwell County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.

The Gregory S. Coleman Unit, formerly known as the Lockhart Unit, is a state prison for women located in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas, operated (as of September 2015) by Management and Training Corporation under contract with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.Lockhart was previously operated by the GEO Group. This facility was opened in January 1993, and has a maximum capacity of 1000 female inmates held at lower security levels. In 2021, the unit was renamed the Gregory S. Coleman Unit to honor a former member of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice.

Lockhart State Park is a state park located at the southwestern edge of Lockhart, Texas, United States and is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park was constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 3803 between 1935 and 1938. The park officially became a state park in 1948.

The M. A. Withers House, near Lockhart, Texas, was built in 1895. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.It is located west of Lockhart on Borchert Loop Rd. It was designed by architect: W.W. Randle in Late Victorian and Italianate style. It was a farmhouse and includes several agricultural outbuildings on a 0.7-acre (0.28 ha) property.

Texas's 35th congressional district is a district that was created as a result of the 2010 United States census. The first candidates ran in the 2012 House elections and were seated for the 113th United States Congress. This election was won by Lloyd Doggett, who previously represented Texas's 25th congressional district before redistricting.The district includes parts of the San Antonio metropolitan area (primarily black- and Hispanic-majority areas), including portions of Bexar County, thin strips of Comal and Hays Counties, a portion of Caldwell County, and portions of southern and eastern Austin in Travis County.In March 2017, a panel of federal judges ruled that the 35th district was illegally drawn with discriminatory intent. In August 2017, another panel of federal judges in San Antonio ruled that the district was unconstitutional. However, the district was allowed to stand in the U.S. Supreme Court's 2018 Abbott v. Perez ruling.Greg Casar, from Austin, won the 2022 election for this seat; Doggett moved to the newly created 37th district, centered almost entirely on Austin and containing small amounts of its suburbs, and won the election there. As a result, Austin will be represented by two Democrats in the House. With a Cook PVI of D+21 (as of 2023), it is now the second-most Democratic district that includes Austin. Only the 37th is more Democratic with a D+24 rating.

Caldwell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 45,883. Its county seat is Lockhart. The county was founded in 1848 and named after Mathew Caldwell, a ranger captain who fought in the Battle of Plum Creek against the Comanches and against Santa Anna's armies during the Texas Revolution. Caldwell was also a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Caldwell County is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area.

Seawillow is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 100 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.

On July 30, 2016, sixteen people were killed when the hot air balloon they were riding in struck power lines, crashed and caught fire in the unincorporated community of Maxwell, near Lockhart, Texas, 30 miles (50 km) south of the state capital Austin. It is the deadliest ballooning disaster to ever occur in the United States.
