Elton railway station

Elton is a village and civil parish in Cambridgeshire, England. Elton lies approximately 7 miles (11 km) south-west of Peterborough. Elton is situated within Huntingdonshire which is a non-metropolitan district of Cambridgeshire as well as being a historic county of England. Elton is a small village within the historic boundaries of Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambridgeshire), England. It lies on the B671 road. Elton Hall and the hamlet of Over End are located on the same road a mile south of the village.

Yarwell Junction is the current western terminus of the Nene Valley Railway. It opened at Easter 2007. It was formerly the junction of the Peterborough to Northampton and Peterborough to Market Harborough lines. In April 2006 a track realignment made space for a platform, and this was constructed during 2007. There was never previously a station on the site. The new station is served by footpaths to Nassington and the mill village of Yarwell, but there is no vehicular access. Yarwell Junction is situated approximately just 1 mile west of Wansford station, at the western end of the 616 yard long Wansford Tunnel, (the fourth longest tunnel on a UK Heritage Railway within preservation).

Elton Hall is a baronial hall in Elton, Cambridgeshire. It has been the ancestral home of the Proby family (sometime known as the Earls of Carysfort) since 1660. The hall lies in an 3,800-acre (1,500 ha) estate through which the River Nene runs. The building incorporates 15th-, 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century parts and is a Grade I listed building.Elton Hall is 2 miles (3.2 km) from Fotheringhay Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was executed in 1587. The Victorian gardens have been skilfully restored in recent years and contain a knot garden, a new rose and herbaceous garden, fine hedges and a Gothic orangery built to celebrate the Millennium. The gardens are promoted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

Sibson is a village in Cambridgeshire, England. Sibson lies approximately 6 miles (10 km) west of Peterborough city centre. Sibson is in the civil parish of Sibson-cum-Stibbington. Sibson is situated within Huntingdonshire which is a non-metropolitan district of Cambridgeshire as well as being a historic county of England. Sibson Aerodrome is 1 km south of the village.

Nassington railway station is a former railway station in Nassington, Northamptonshire. It was owned by the London and North Western Railway but from 1883 to 1916 was also served by trains of the Great Northern Railway. It opened for passengers along with Wakerley and Barrowden railway station and King's Cliffe railway station on 1 November 1879, on a new section of line constructed from Wansford Line Junction at Seaton to Yarwell Junction at Wansford.Nassington station closed to passengers on 1 July 1957, (at the same time as Wansford railway station and Castor railway station, the next two stations east towards Peterborough), and to goods on 3 August 1957. The line remained open until the withdrawal of the passenger service from Rugby (Midland) to Peterborough (East) on 6 June 1966. On that date the section from Rugby (Midland) to King's Cliffe was closed completely, but the line east of King's Cliffe station remained open for goods traffic. On 3 June 1968 King's Cliffe station was closed to goods along with the track as far as the junction with a private siding into the ironstone quarries owned by Naylor Benzon 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) west of Nassington station. The last train to the quarry ran on 4 January 1971, and the siding and railway at Nassington finally closed on 26 February 1971.

Nassington is a village and civil parish in Northamptonshire, England. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 670 people, increasing to 827 at the 2011 Census The River Nene runs along the eastern side of the parish. The villages name means 'Promontory place farm/settlement'.The village has existed since at least Anglo-Saxon times, for an Anglo-Saxon hall was taken over by the Viking king, Cnut the Great, as one of his royal halls. Cnut is known to have visited after 1017, with his court including Aethelric the bishop of Dorchester on Thames. In 1107 Henry I gave the hall and land to the Bishop of Lincoln, Robert Bloet, to endow a prebend. The village and manor were featured in episode 117, King Cnut's Manor of Time Team (aired 7 March 2004). The manor is now a private home, but the Prebendal Manor and Tithe Barn Museum, and gardens, are open to the paying public on some days. The gardens only contain plants introduced prior to 1485.

Wansford Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the preserved Nene Valley Railway in Cambridgeshire. The tunnel is situated to the south of the village of Wansford, but just to the west of Wansford railway station. It was on the Blisworth to Peterborough line, opened in 1845 by the London and Birmingham Railway. The line was originally double track, however in the present day only a single track runs through the full length of the tunnel. A siding is partially contained within the tunnel, entering at the eastern end. The tunnel is 616 yards long and has no ventilation shafts.Just to the west of the tunnel the NVR has opened a new station, Yarwell Junction railway station, which opened to the public in 2007. The hamlet of Sibson lies atop the hill through which the tunnel is bored.

Peterborough/Sibson Airfield (ICAO: EGSP), also known as Sibson Aerodrome, is an unlicensed aerodrome located 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) west of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England and 1 km (0.62 mi) south of Sibson, Cambridgeshire. The aerodrome was previously licensed by the CAA (Ordinary Licence number P5877) for flights for the public transport of passengers and for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Northamptonshire School of Flying Limited). It became unlicensed in 2013.

Fotheringhay Castle, also known as Fotheringay Castle, was a High Middle Age Norman Motte-and-bailey castle in the village of Fotheringhay 3+1⁄2 miles (5.6 km) to the north of the market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire, England (grid reference TL061930). It was probably founded around 1100 by Simon de Senlis, Earl of Northampton. In 1113, possession passed to Prince David of Scotland when he married Simon's widow. The castle then descended with the Scottish princes until the early 13th century, when it was confiscated by King John of England. By 1220, Fotheringhay Castle was controlled by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester. In January the following year, it was briefly captured by William II de Forz, 3rd Earl of Albemarle, in his rebellion against King Henry III. Forz abandoned the castle, Henry III took it under his control, and Fotheringhay remained in royal hands until the reign of Edward II. It was a favoured residence of the Dukes of York, and King Richard III was born there in 1452. It was also the final place of imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was tried and executed in the castle in 1587. The castle was dismantled in the 1630s and most of the masonry was removed, leaving only the earthworks. The site is protected as a Scheduled Monument and is open to the public.

Warmington is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England with a population of 874 (as of the 2001 census), increasing to 939 at the 2011 Census. The village's name means 'Farm/settlement which is connected with Wyrma'. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of the town of Oundle near the Cambridgeshire border and is 10 miles south west of the city of Peterborough. It has a large 13th-century church, and fine watermill, manor house and dovecote. Most of the houses, however, were built in the 1960s and 1970s. A large estate of private homes has been added since the turn of the millennium increasing the size of the village by around 30%. Warmington is a working, functional village with some impressive old stone buildings which are considered very attractive. The Nene Way footpath runs through the village and is well signposted.
