Swinfen

HM Prison Swinfen Hall is a Category C men's prison and Young Offenders Institution, located in the village of Swinfen (near Lichfield) in Staffordshire, England. The prison is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.

Swinfen Hall is an 18th-century country mansion house, now converted into a hotel, situated at Swinfen, in the Lichfield District of Staffordshire in England. It is a Grade II* listed building.The Hall was built in 1757 by Samuel Swynfen to a design by architect Benjamin Wyatt (father of James Wyatt), and remained the home of the Swinfen and Swinfen Broun families for almost two hundred years. Samuel Swynfen (of Swynfen) sold Swinfen Hall to his kinsman, Samuel Swinfen of Walbrook House. The latter died without any children, and left his estate in his will to his nephew Samuel Grundy (the son of his sister Anne, who had married Thomas Grundy of Appleby, Leicestershire) — on the condition that he take the surname of Swinfen and procure an Act of Parliament to that effect. Samuel Grundy (now Swinfen) duly changed his name by an Act of Parliament of 1748.However in 1770, Samuel Swinfen also died without children and the Hall passed to his brother, Thomas Grundy, who also then changed his name to Swinfen, by an Act of Parliament of 1771.Thomas Grundy (now Swinfen) was the grandfather of Samuel Swynfen whose will was contested in a series of trials from 1856 to 1864 and raised important questions of ethics in the legal profession. The Hall was extended and improved in the early 20th century by Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Swinfen-Broun. On his death in 1948 the estate was bequeathed to the Church and City of Lichfield, and most of the land was sold off. The Hall stood unoccupied for many years until acquired in 1987 by the present owners and converted to a hotel. Patience Swinfen, widowed daughter-in-law and heir of Samuel Swinfen, who died in 1854, was involved in a celebrated legal case related to his will.

Freeford Manor (previously known as Freeford Hall) is a privately owned 18th-century country house at Freeford, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. It is the home of the Dyott family and is a Grade II listed building. The Dyotts of Lichfield acquired interests in the manor of Freeford over many years from about 1606. When Richard Dyott, Member of Parliament for Lichfield 1690-1715 died in 1719, his son, also Richard decided to move from the city to live at Freeford. In about 1730 he built a new small three bayed red brick house which was extended and improved throughout the 18th century. His son, another Richard was Recorder of Lichfield and in 1798 High Sheriff of Staffordshire. His nephew yet another Richard Dyott of Freeford, MP for Lichfield 1865-74, carried out substantial improvements to the house under the direction of Joseph Potter, the elder, architect of Lichfield in the mid 19th century and alterations later continued to create the existing mansion. In 1891 a cousin Richard Burnaby, who changed his surname to Dyott, inherited the estate. The Dyott family have a chapel dedicated to them in the north end of St Mary's Church, Lichfield.

King Edward VI School, Lichfield, is a co-educational comprehensive school near the heart of the city of Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. The school is a co-educational comprehensive school maintained by Staffordshire Education Authority and admits pupils from the age of 11 (Year 7), with most electing to continue their education into the Sixth Form, leaving at 18 (Year 13). In the main school (Years 7–11), the published admissions number is 214 pupils for each year group. In total there are in excess of 1400 pupils on roll. In 1995, the school celebrated its 500th anniversary, its Quincentenary. During its long history the school has educated some famous names, most notably Samuel Johnson.

Manley Hall (also known as Thickbroom Hall) was an English Tudor-style country house in Weeford, near Lichfield in Staffordshire. The house was built in 1833 in a 1200-acre estate for John Shawe Manley, who in 1843 was High Sheriff of Staffordshire. It was designed by architect Thomas Trubshaw (1801–1842) of Little Haywood. The building included a watch tower and elaborate finials and chimneys. However, due to severe wood rot, Manley Hall, apart from the south-west end, was demolished in 1905. On the estate today there is an open lawn where the house used to stand and Manley Wood. Plans are in hand to convert the service wing and the stable block to dwelling houses.

Swinfen and Packington is a civil parish in Lichfield District, Staffordshire, England. The parish was newly formed in 1934 by division from Weeford. The parish includes the hamlet of Swinfen, and contains several listed buildings, including Packington Hall.

Boley Park is the name given to the ward and suburb of Lichfield in the Lichfield District and the county of Staffordshire, England. It is one of the six wards on Lichfield City Council and as of September 2024 was represented by Cllrs Andrew Fox (Con), Janet Eagland (Lab), Mark Warfield (Con) and Robert Yardley. (Con).

St Michael on Greenhill is a parish church in Lichfield, Staffordshire in the United Kingdom, located on the high ground of Greenhill in the east of the city. A church has been on the present site since at least 1190 but the current building dates mainly from the restoration of 1842–43. The churchyard is one of five ancient burial grounds in England and is one of the largest churchyards in the country at 9 acres (36,000 m2). The church is Grade II* listed; four of the monuments in the churchyard are separately listed Grade II.

Lichfield City is one of two railway stations serving the city of Lichfield, in Staffordshire, England. It is situated in the city-centre, and is towards the northern end of the Cross-City Line 17+1⁄4 miles (27.8 km) northeast of Birmingham New Street. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by West Midlands Railway. The other station serving Lichfield is Lichfield Trent Valley, on the city outskirts.

Weeford is a village and civil parish in the Lichfield district of Staffordshire, England. According to the 2011 Census, the parish had a population of 215, an increase from 202 in the 2001 Census.The name Weeford is believed to come from the Old English Wēohford or Wēoford, and to mean "Holy ford", or "ford by a heathen temple".The medieval church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, and listed Grade II. It was rebuilt to its present form in 1802, to a design by James Wyatt. Wyatt had himself been born at Blackbrook Farm in Weeford in 1746, and by 1802 had already designed such buildings as the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford and Broadway Tower, Worcestershire. Manley Hall (also known as Thickbroom Hall) was an English Tudor-style country house which at one time stood in a 1200-acre estate on the western outskirts of the village.

The Hospital of St John Baptist without the Barrs is a building with an adjacent chapel in the city of Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building.The building has ancient roots, once providing accommodation to travellers outside the southern city walls who would arrive in Lichfield after the gates had closed for the night. The distinctive eight chimneys fronting St John's Street date back to the Tudor period when the hospital served as an almshouse for elderly gentlemen in the city.

Sandfields Pumping Station is a disused pumping station in Lichfield, in Staffordshire, England. The engine house was built in 1873 and contains the original Cornish beam engine installed at that time. It is a Grade II* listed building.
