The capital of Japan was located in the area for a short period in the 12th century. Today the area is an important manufacturing zone.The modern ward of Hyogo was formed as Sōsai-ku (湊西区, 'Minato (a surname) West Ward') when Kobe adopted the system of wards in 1931. Its name was changed to Hyogo in 1933 and its current boundaries were settled in 1971. The floral emblem of the ward is the pansy.

Shinkaichi Station (新開地駅, Shinkaichi-eki, station numbers: HS 36 (Hanshin, Hankyu), KB 01 (Shintetsu)) is a railway station operated by Hanshin Electric Railway Co., Ltd., Hankyu Corporation and Kobe Electric Railway Co., Ltd. in the district of Shinkaichi, Hyogo-ku, Kobe opened on April 7, 1968. Kobe Rapid Transit Railway Co., Ltd. owns the railway lines, and Hanshin, Hankyu and Shintetsu operate trains running on the lines. Shinkaichi was originally at the heart of Kobe, but Kobe's central business district has shifted towards Sannomiya. All 3 railway lines that stop at this station are named Kobe Kosoku Line.

Minatogawa-Kōen Station (湊川公園駅, Minatogawa-Kōen-eki) is a railway station in Hyōgo-ku, Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.

The Battle of Minatogawa (Japanese: 湊川の戰い), also known as the Battle of Minato River, was part of the Nanboku-chō Wars fought near the Minato River in Settsu Province (present day Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture) on 5 July 1336. The Imperial forces loyal to Emperor Go-Daigo led by Kusunoki Masashige and Nitta Yoshisada attempted to intercept the Ashikaga forces led by Ashikaga Takauji in Settsu. The Ashikaga invaded from Kyushu after consolidating their forces at the Battle of Tatarahama and attacked the Imperial force at the Minato River from land and sea. The Imperial force was surrounded and destroyed by Ashikaga, killing Kusunoki and causing Yoshisada to retreat, and allowing the Ashikaga to march to Kyoto. The Battle of Minatogawa was a major defeat for the Imperial loyalists but became famous in Japanese mythology for the loyalty displayed by Kusunoki to the Emperor in the face of certain death and defeat.

Nōfuku-ji (能福寺) is a Buddhist temple that, from the legend, was founded in 805 by the monk Saichō, in Kita Sakasegawa, Hyōgo-ku, Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. Saichō (of the Tendai sect) placed a statue of Yakushi Nyorai of his own making in the temple hall and named the temple Nōfuku Gokoku Mitsu-ji (能福護国密寺). This temple served as a branch temple of Kyoto's Shōren-in from the early Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period. The Shin-saigoku Pilgrimage (新西国三十三箇所観音霊場) (a Buddhist pilgrimage route in Japan) includes this temple as one of the stops.

Nagata Shrine (長田神社, Nagata jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Nagata-ku, Kobe, Japan. At Nagata, Kotoshironushi-no-Okami is enshrined.The shrine is associated with Amaterasu, who is said to have told Empress Jingū that a shrine was wanted at Nagata.
