Gainsborough (UK Parliament constituency)

Gainsborough and Horncastle is a former county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. It existed from 1983 to 1997. The area of and around Horncastle is now in the constituency of Louth and Horncastle. For elections prior to 1983, and from 1997, see Gainsborough.

Spridlington is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) north from the city and county town of Lincoln, and just off the A15 road. According to the 2001 Census the village had a population of 194, increasing to 213 at the 2011 census. The village is part of the Owmby Group of parishes. The parish church of St Hilary's dates from 1875. It replaced an earlier church dedicated to St Hilary and St Albinus – originally there were two churches in the village, but the site of St Albinus is unrecorded.By July 2007, St Hilary's had raised enough money to have its organ renovated. The restoration project was completed and the historic Thomas Nicholson organ was re-dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln on St Hilary's Day, 13 January 2008.There is also a village hall.

Saxby is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 9 miles (14 km) north from Lincoln and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) east from the A15 road. The population is included in the civil parish of Owmby-by-Spital (called Owmby). The village is part of the Owmby Group of parishes.St Helens parish church is a Grade I listed building, constructed in 1775 as an ashlar-faced red-brick mortuary chapel. The chapel, later a church, had been attributed to Carr of York (who constructed the nearby Norton Place) but no evidence to prove this has been found. It has been assumed that the Lumbys, who often worked with Carr, might have been the architects. There are of four wall plaques in white marble and Greek style, dating from 1832 to 1856, to the Earl of Scarborough, for whom the chapel was built.There existed an earlier church in the nearby medieval villages of East and West Firsby, but nothing remains of that or the village.

East Firsby and West Firsby are two hamlets in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. They are situated about 10 miles (16 km) north from the city of Lincoln, and set in the Lincolnshire Wolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. East Firsby lies between Saxby and Spridlington, with West Firsby about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the west, near the A15 road. East Firsby civil parish was abolished to enlarge that of West Firsby in 1936. There is no church. The hamlet of Firsby is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Frisebi", with 22 households, 30 acres (0.12 km2) of meadow and a church, with Ilbert of Lacy as Lord of the Manor.The Manor House at West Firsby fell into disrepair and was demolished during the 1990s. At East Firsby is the mid 18th-century Grade II listed Manor Farmhouse, and at West Firsby is a site of a deserted medieval village.There is an oilfield at West Firsby.

Hackthorn is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is combined with Cold Hanworth to form the parish council of Hackthorn and Cold Hanworth. The population of the civil parish (including Cold Hanworth) at the 2011 census was 207. It is situated approximately 6 miles (10 km) north from the city and county town of Lincoln, and 1 mile (1.6 km) east from the A15. According to the 2001 Census it had a population of 180. The village is part of the Owmby Group of parishes.The village dates back to Roman times. Its most prominent building is its hall, a large square brick house, built in the late 18th century in a landscaped park of around 100 acres (0.40 km2).Situated among the trees of the park overlooking the lake is the parish church, dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. A village church is mentioned in the Domesday Book, although the present church is a Victorian gothic building. It contains carved woodwork in the reredos screen and gallery, and an 1869 Nicholson Organ, fully restored in 2006. There is also a primary school, post office, shop and village hall.

Owmby-by-Spital is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 2 miles (3 km) east from the A15 road, 11 miles (18 km) north from Lincoln and 8 miles (13 km) west from Market Rasen. The population of the civil parish (just called Owmby then) was 388 at the 2011 census. The village is part of the Owmby Group of parishes.Owmby-by-Spital is listed in 6 entries of the Domesday Book as 'Ouneby', in the Aslacoe wapentake, in the West Riding of Lindsey. The largest holder in 1066 and 1086 being the Bishop of Lincoln (St Mary). Other land holders in 1086 include Bishop Odo of Bayeux, Ivo Tallboys (Taillebois), and Jocelyn, (son of Lambert).The civil parish covers an area of 1,600 acres (6.5 km2). According to the 2001 Census it had a population of 309.The designation of "Spital" in the name comes from the proximity to the village of Spital-in-the-Street. The village church is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. Kelly's noted that the church was built in 1808, with parts of the structure Norman, and that it seated 200 people.A school was built in 1836, by 1881 Owmby school had closed.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands close to the former Roman road, Ermine Street, now the A15 road.

Normanby by Spital is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 318, increasing to 412 at the 2011 census. It is approximately 10 miles (16 km) north from Lincoln, and just off the A15. The village is part of the Owmby Group of parishes.The name Normanby is from the Old English and Old Scandinavian Northman+by, or "Northman village". In the 1086 Domesday Book, the village is given as Normanebi. Normanby by Spital also has a neighbouring village called Owmby-by-Spital. St. Peter's Church dates from the 12th century and is a Grade I listed building. It is redundant and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. It was extensively renovated in 1890 and it currently seats 100 people. There was a Methodist chapel but now it has been converted into a habitable accommodation. The village facilities include a primary school, a post office, a store, The Bottle and Glass public house, and a school hall. The school hall holds activities such as a youth club and an art club. Normanby by Spital primary school received a 2006 Ofsted inspection rating of Grade 1 (outstanding). A following 2010 inspection rated the school as Grade 2 (good).During the Second World War, a wireless station was in operation along Normanby Cliff Road which was connected to RAF Scampton and was used to transmit messages to Bomber Squadrons over Germany or other enemy territory. Each Bomber Command Group had a similar site and they could be found all over the east of the country. The R/T operators were based at RAF Bawtry, Doncaster. This role continued throughout the "Cold War" period when transmissions were made to the 24/7 airborne V-Bomber squadrons. In later years this role diminished and the station finally closed; the buildings have now been demolished although the site is still fenced off. The Bottle and Glass public house was open for duration of the war, as it was a frequent rest-stop for local airmen. Residents of the village remember the Dambusters raid, hearing the Lancasters going overhead and being concerned that they were "struggling" to keep in the air.

Caenby is a hamlet and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 10 miles (16 km) north of the city and county town of Lincoln. The population is included in the civil parish of Glentham. The place name, Caenby, seems to contain an unrecorded Old Norse personal name Kafni, + bȳ (Old Norse), a farmstead, a village, so possibly, 'Kafni's farm or settlement'. The place appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Couenebi.Caenby's Grade II listed Anglican church is dedicated to St Nicholas. A moated manor house, now the Grade II listed Hall Farm House, was a seat of the Tournay family from the time of Edward I to George II. In 1541 Henry VIII slept here while on his Lincolnshire progress. In the 18th century, Lawrence Monck occupied the house.In 1945 fields adjacent to Caenby were a military Q decoy site maintained by RAF Hemswell. Dummy plywood buildings, inflatable rubber aircraft or vehicles, and a ploughed faux runway were set up to simulate an active airfield and draw German bombers away from genuine target airfields.

Royal Air Force Faldingworth or more simply RAF Faldingworth is a former Royal Air Force station used during and after the Second World War. It was located close to the village of Faldingworth in Lincolnshire, England.

William Farr School, formally William Farr C of E Comprehensive School, is a Church of England academy school for 11 to 18-year-olds located within the village of Dunholme, Lincolnshire but officially is in Welton, Lincolnshire, England, 8 km (5 mi) north-east of Lincoln, near the A46. Despite officially being a part of Welton, most of the school grounds are located in the civil parish of Dunholme.

Welton (; or Welton by Lincoln) is a large village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish was recorded as 4,327 in the 2011 census. It is geographically situated 10 km (6 mi) north from Lincoln city centre. The name Welton by Lincoln is also used to distinguish from other similarly named villages in Lincolnshire: Welton le Wold and Welton le Marsh. The village centre has been long appreciated for its picturesque and quintessentially English qualities, boasting multiple Grade II or higher listed buildings, alongside the eponymous Welton Beck, whose venerable spring really puts the 'Wel' in Welton. It has also been known as a wildlife haven due to an abundance of green space, and as a charitable place, especially through the church and schools. Since November 1969, the village has been a designated conservation area.
