The station is the terminus of both the Derwent Valley Line from Derby and Peak Rail who operate heritage services to Rowsley South. Both lines are formed from portions of the Midland Railway's former main line to Manchester Central. Through running is technically possible but is not done in normal service.

Derwent House is a historic building in Matlock in Derbyshire, England, originally the home of the important Knowles family in the 17th century. The original estate included several buildings surrounding what is now known as Derwent House, including one which is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in Matlock, dating from circa 1670, predated only by the bridge over the River Derwent. Hall Leys Park is built on land bequeathed by the Knowles family to the parish of Matlock in 1898. Derwent House has been run as a guest house since the mid-20th century.

The civil parish of Matlock Town had a population in the 2011 UK census of 9,543.Matlock is nine miles (14 km) south-west of Chesterfield and in easy reach of the cities of Derby (19 miles), Sheffield (20 miles) and Nottingham (29 miles); the Greater Manchester conurbation is 30 miles away. Matlock is within the Derbyshire Dales district, which also includes the towns of Bakewell and Ashbourne, as well as Wirksworth. The headquarters of Derbyshire County Council are in the town.

Matlock was an Urban District in Derbyshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894. The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and combined with the Ashbourne, Bakewell and Wirksworth Urban Districts and the Ashbourne and Bakewell Rural Districts to form the new West Derbyshire district.

The chapel, together with its retaining and attached walls, is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches.
