Calvert Green

Calvert is a village in Buckinghamshire, England, near the village of Steeple Claydon. Originally named after a wealthy local family who had inherited property at Claydon House, Middle Claydon, on condition that they changed their surname to Verney, the village was founded as a hamlet in the Victorian era to house workers for the brick works that were constructed in the area. The Calvert Brickworks was opened in 1900 by Arthur Werner Itter, a brickmaker from the Peterborough area, but have since been closed in 1991 and turned into a nature reserve (Calvert Jubilee) and landfill. All that remains of the hamlet is a small group of red brick terrace houses. At the start of the 21st century a new housing estate was built called Calvert Green, greatly enlarging the original village. In 2007 Calvert Green was detached from Charndon and formed into a new civil parish. At the 2011 Census the population of the village was still included in the civil parish of Charndon.

Calvert was a railway station at Calvert, Buckinghamshire on the former Great Central Main Line between Manchester Piccadilly and London Marylebone. The station was opened in 1899 and closed to passengers in 1963 and goods in 1964.

Calvert Jubilee is a 22 hectares (54 acres) nature reserve in Calvert near Steeple Claydon in Buckinghamshire. It is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT). In July 2020, High Speed 2 (HS2) announced it would take possession of 20% of the reserve and clear it.

Edgcott is a village and a civil parish in Buckinghamshire district in the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the Aylesbury Vale, about eight miles east of Bicester. The village name is derived from the Old English for "oak cottage". In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as Achecote, "æcen" (from which the word "acorn" is derived) being the Old English word for oak. The manor of Edgcott was once owned by the physician and poet Sir Samuel Garth. The village also has HM Prison Grendon located nearby. In 1807 Edgcott was described as:The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford. The church is old but good. There is an Independent chapel.

Charndon is a hamlet and civil parish in the Aylesbury Vale district of Buckinghamshire, England.

Sheephouse Wood is a 56.9-hectare (141-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Charndon in Buckinghamshire.The site has ancient pedunculate oak woodland with diverse ground flora, typical breeding birds and some uncommon invertebrates. It is located on very poorly drained Oxford clay in the Vale of Aylesbury, and there are many small streams. Much of the woods have been woodland has been coppiced. Wet areas have maple and ash. The ground flora is dominated by brambles and bluebells. Invertebrates include the rare black hairstreak butterfly and ground-hopper tetrix subulata.There is access by footpaths from Calvert. Some areas have notices: "No public right of way: nature conservation area". The former Great Central Main Line cuts through the southwestern edge of the wood. The alignment is still in use for freight. 1.4 hectares of woodland at the southwestern edge of the site will be lost with the construction of High Speed 2, which will pass adjacent to the existing railway.

The village is about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Buckingham, 4.5 miles (7 km) west of Winslow and 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Waddesdon. The 2011 Census recorded the parish population as 2,278.

Grendon Underwood is a village and civil parish in west Buckinghamshire, England, near the border with Oxfordshire. The village sits between Woodham and Edgcott, near the Roman road Akeman Street (now part of the A41), and around 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Aylesbury. At the 2011 Census, the population of the civil parish was 1,625.

Grendon and Doddershall Woods are a 67.1-hectare (166-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Grendon Underwood in Buckinghamshire. The local planning authorities are Aylesbury Vale District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council.The site is broadleaved oak woodland on north Buckinghamshire clay, with an understorey of hazel and blackthorn. Herbs include primrose and wood anemone, and small streams and wide rides provide additional habitats. The woods have 35 butterfly species, including the rare black hairstreak. There were five species of fritillary, but some have not been seen since the late 1970s. Breeding birds include nightingales.There is access by footpaths from Grendon Underwood.

Hollowhill and Pullingshill Woods is a 23-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Marlow in Buckinghamshire. It is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Chilterns Beechwoods Special Area of Conservation. The local planning authorities are Wycombe District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council. Pullingshill Wood is owned by the Woodland Trust, and Hollowhill Wood was formerly owned by Buckinghamshire County Council, but was transferred to the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. Since November 2015 the 7.8-hectare site has been managed by the Trust as "Hog and Hollowhill Woods".A large part of the site is mature beech woodland, the result of neglected coppicing. Much of the ground below the trees is bare, but there are some unusual plants, including the nationally rare ghost orchid. Trees on the lower slopes include ash, wild cherry and crab apple, and there is heather in more open areas.There is access from a road between Bockmer End and Hook Corner, which bisects the woods.
