Newton Reigny

Penrith was a rural district within the administrative county of Cumberland, England that existed from 1894 to 1974 with slight boundary changes in 1934. The district largely corresponded to the ancient Leath Ward of Cumberland but excluding the parishes of Penrith and Alston with Garrigill. The area had been a rural sanitary district prior to the Local Government Act 1894. Penrith itself was covered by Penrith Urban District, which the Rural District surrounded on the west, north and east. The council was based at offices known as Mansion House in Penrith now used by its successor authority Eden District Council. Within the district's boundaries was a small part of the Lake District National Park. The district was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974, being merged with other districts to form the Eden district. At its demise in 1974 the district was divided into the civil parishes of: Ainstable Castle Sowerby Catterlen (including Newton Reigny) Culgaith (including Kirkland, Skirwirth and Blencarn) Dacre Glassonby (including Gamblesby) Great Salkeld Greystoke Hesket (formerly Hesket-in-the-Forest and Plumpton parishes) Hunsonby (formerly Hunsonby & Winskill and Little Salkeld parishes) Hutton Kirkoswald (formerly the parishes of Kirkoswald, Staffield and Renwick) Langwathby (including Edenhall) Lazonby Matterdale Mungrisdale Ousby Skelton ThrelkeldThe name Penrith Rural was resurrected as a new electoral division of Cumbria in the 1990s but does not include any of the area once administered by the Penrith RDC and does in fact cover an area of the ancient county of Westmorland.

Catterlen is a small village and civil parish 3 miles (4.8 km) north west of Penrith, Cumbria. At the 2001 census the civil parish had a population of 471, increasing to 605 at the 2011 Census.The village is a linear one with the B5305 road dividing it into two. Junction 41 of the M6 motorway is at Catterlen. The parish of Catterlen also includes the slightly more populous village of Newton Reigny which was a separate parish from 1866 to 1934, previous to 1866 both villages were part of a larger Newton Reigny Parish. The large house and former pele tower known as Catterlen Hall is closer to Newton Reigny than Catterlen. Within the parish is Newton Rigg College, which was part of the Yorkshire-based Askham Bryan College.

Newton Rigg College was an agricultural college near Penrith, Cumbria, England, founded in 1896 as the Cumberland and Westmorland Farm School. From 2011 it was part of Askham Bryan College, which in 2020 announced that it would close in 2021.

Newbiggin is a small village in Cumbria, North West England. It is in the Dacre civil parish about 3 mi (4.8 km) west of Penrith. It lies at 750 ft (230 m) sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly wind by Flusco Pike, 150 ft (46 m) higher. It is described as a "non-nucleated village," lying for a mile along either side of the C3019 between the A66 and the B5288. There are at least six other villages in Cumbria with the same name, which is derived from the Old English ‘new biggin', or new house. Locally this village is referred to as the "Stainton Newbiggin," to distinguish it from the others.

Blencow railway station was situated on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway between Penrith and Cockermouth in Cumberland (now in Cumbria), England. The station served the villages of Blencow (or Blencowe) and Newbiggin. The station opened to passenger traffic on 2 January 1865, and closed on 3 March 1952. It reopened temporarily on 2 July 1956 before closing permanently on 6 March 1972. Although called Blencow the station was actually situated on the edge of Newbiggin and was over 2 miles (3.2 km) from Blencow. Possible alternative names for the station before it was opened were Newbiggin station and Dacre & Greystoke station The station could not be named Newbiggin as there is another Newbiggin on the Carlisle - Settle Railway a few miles away.

Laithes is a hamlet in the civil parish of Skelton, in the English county of Cumbria. It belongs to Eden District. Laithes's region is North West. Height is 170.6m.

The Penrith Hoard is a dispersed hoard of 10th century silver penannular brooches found at Flusco Pike, Newbiggin Moor, near Penrith in Cumbria, and now in the British Museum in London. The largest "thistle brooch" was discovered in 1785 and another in 1830, with the bulk of items being recovered in two groups close to each other by archaeologists in 1989. Whether all the finds made close to each other were originally deposited at the same time remains uncertain, but it is thought likely that at least the brooches were. The brooches are thought to have been deposited in about 930.

Stainton is a village near the A66, in the parish of Dacre, in the Eden district, in the English county of Cumbria. It is a few miles away from the market town of Penrith. It is in the parish of Dacre, although it is larger than Dacre. It has a Methodist church and a primary school. In 2019 the built-up area had an estimated population of 758. In 1870-72 the township had a population of 330.

Dalemain is a country house around 5 miles south-west of Penrith in Cumbria, England. It is a Grade I listed building. Dalemain is part of the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Blencow or Blencowe is a small village near Penrith, Cumbria, England. It is divided by the River Petteril into Great Blencow to the south and Little Blencow to the north. Great Blencow is in the civil parish of Dacre while Little Blencow is within Greystoke parish.

Dacre Beck is a small river in Cumbria, England.Dacre Beck rises on the north side of Gowbarrow Fell and flows north past Ulcat Row, picking up streams from Lowthwaite and Matterdale End, traversing a valley between Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell, before changing its course to eastward at Thackthwaite. The beck collects more streams at Hutton, one of which comes south from Berrier past Beckces, near to Penruddock. From here, Dacre Beck flows past the ancient settlement of Dacre. The beck is a tributary of the River Eamont, which it joins at Dalemain near Stainton. Dacre Beck is a Celtic river name meaning the trickling one.

Barton is a hamlet in the civil parish of Barton and Pooley Bridge, in Eden District, Cumbria, England. It lies about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the north east of Pooley Bridge, east of the River Eamont and west of the B5320 road from Pooley Bridge to Eamont Bridge. The parish, which includes Barton and the larger settlement of Pooley Bridge, was renamed from "Barton" to "Barton and Pooley Bridge" on 1 April 2019, and had a population of 238 at the 2011 Census.
