Free Trade International Bridge

The Los Indios Port of Entry opened in 1992 with the completion of the Free Trade International Bridge in 1992. The crossing handles both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. Because of the length of the bridge and the rural location, there are very few pedestrians. The Bridge is owned jointly by Cameron County and the cities of Harlingen and San Benito. For many years, Los Indios was the sole port of entry for transmigrantes transporting goods from the United States to Latin America.

The Thornton Affair, also known as the Thornton Skirmish, Thornton's Defeat, or Rancho Carricitos was a battle in 1846 between the military forces of the United States and Mexico 20 miles (32 km) west upriver from Zachary Taylor's camp along the Rio Grande.: 48  The much larger Mexican force defeated the Americans in the opening of hostilities, and was the primary justification for U.S. President James K. Polk's call to Congress to declare war.: 48 

La Paloma (Spanish: The Dove) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,903 at the 2010 census, up from 354 at the 2000 census, when it was drawn to cover a much smaller area. By the 2020 census, the population further increased to 3,218. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Encantada-Ranchito-El Calaboz, also known as El Calaboz Rancheria in the San Pedro de Carricitos Land Grant, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,981 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Palmer is a colonia and census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. It is in the southern part of the county, bordered to the west by San Benito, to the northeast by Brownsville, to the east by Rice Tracts, to the south by Encantada-Ranchito-El Calaboz, and to the southwest by La Paloma. It is 5 miles (8 km) south of the center of San Benito and 18 miles (29 km) northwest of downtown Brownsville. The Resaca del Rancho Viejo, a southeast-flowing tributary of the Rio Grande, flows through the northern part of the community.

Rice Tracts is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. It is in the southern part of the county, bordered to the north and northeast by Brownsville, to the southeast, south, and southwest by Encantada-Ranchito-El Calaboz, and to the northwest by Palmer. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of San Benito and 15 miles (24 km) northwest of downtown Brownsville. The Resaca del Rancho Viejo, a southeastward-flowing tributary of the Rio Grande, winds through the northern half of the community.

El Camino Angosto is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 186 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Cavazos is an unincorporated community in Cameron County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 201 in 2000. It is located within the Rio Grande Valley and the Brownsville-Harlingen metropolitan area.
