Three Sisters Recreation Area

Bryn Hall, also called Brynne Hall, is situated in Bryn Park, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester.

Bryn Hall Colliery was a coal mine on the Lancashire Coalfield in Bryn, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester then in the historic county of Lancashire, England. The colliery was worked in 1866 by Crippin and Smethurst who left the partnership a year later. It was owned by Crippin and Sons in 1868, W and B J Crippen in 1871 and in 1873 William Crippin, the owner was sinking new pits. The owners between 1875 and 1886 were W and E F Crippen followed by E F Crippen and H H Crippen up to 1892.In 1908 the colliery had five shafts and employed 400 workers underground and 150 above ground. The colliery was managed by Peter Gorton, and his undermanagers were T Pownall, John Grundy and P Bullough.George Orwell visited the colliery in 1936 when he was gathering material for his book The Road to Wigan Pier. Today the colliery site is a privately owned and consists of agricultural land, housing and a water ski lake, to the north east of the Three Sisters Recreation Area.

Makerfield is an area in North West England. It is now split between the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, and the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in Merseyside, both within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire. Places in the area include Ince-in-Makerfield, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Newton-in-Makerfield. The Domesday survey recorded an area of woodland in excess of 10 leagues by 6 leagues associated with Newton. This was larger by far than anywhere else in the Cheshire survey. An area of this size would have encompassed most of the land bordered by present-day Warrington, Wigan, and Leigh townships. When Makerfield was referred to it could have been anywhere within this woodland area.

The station is situated on the electrified Liverpool–Wigan line 16+1⁄4 miles (26.2 km) northeast of Liverpool Lime Street and 3+3⁄4 miles (6.0 km) south of Wigan. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Northern Trains.

The depot is situated on the West Coast Main Line and is about 2 km (1.2 mi) south of Wigan North Western station. Springs Branch depot was rebuilt and reopened on 7 February 2020.The depot code is SP. From March 1958 until the introduction of TOPS in May 1973, it was 8F.

Ashton-in-Makerfield Town Hall, formerly Ashton-in-Makerfield Urban District Council Offices, was a municipal building in Bryn Street, Ashton-in-Makerfield, a town in Greater Manchester, England. The building, which served as the offices and meeting place of Ashton-in-Makerfield Urban District Council, was demolished in 2017.

Ashton-in-Makerfield is a market town in Greater Manchester, England. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and is 4.2 miles (6.8 km) south of the town of Wigan. In 2001 it had a population of 28,505, increasing to 28,762 at the 2011 Census.Historically a part of Lancashire, Ashton-in-Makerfield was anciently a township in the parish of Newton-in-Makerfield (as Newton-le-Willows was once known), Winwick and hundred of West Derby. With neighbouring Haydock, Ashton-in-Makerfield was a chapelry, but the two were split in 1845. The place has long been a centre for the manufacture of locks and hinges, but also sits on the Lancashire Coalfield, and so was a coal mining district.
