Cansfield High School is a coeducational secondary school located in the Ashton-in-Makerfield area of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England.

Bryn is a component ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It is part of the larger town of Ashton-in-Makerfield and is geographically indistinguishable from it, but forms a separate local council ward. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 11,662. Served by Bryn railway station, Bryn is home to the Three Sisters Recreation Area which has been created from three large spoil tips which remain from Bryn's role in Lancashire's coal mining past. The recreation area is also the site of the Three Sisters Race Circuit, which provides race driving instruction and plays host to kart racing events and motorcycle road race meetings at clubman level.

Ashton-in-Makerfield is a market town in Greater Manchester, England. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and is 4.2 miles (6.8 km) south of the town of Wigan. In 2001 it had a population of 28,505, increasing to 28,762 at the 2011 Census.Historically a part of Lancashire, Ashton-in-Makerfield was anciently a township in the parish of Newton-in-Makerfield (as Newton-le-Willows was once known), Winwick and hundred of West Derby. With neighbouring Haydock, Ashton-in-Makerfield was a chapelry, but the two were split in 1845. The place has long been a centre for the manufacture of locks and hinges, but also sits on the Lancashire Coalfield, and so was a coal mining district.

The building, which served as the offices and meeting place of Ashton-in-Makerfield Urban District Council, was demolished in 2017.

It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Wigan, the archdeaconry of Warrington, and the diocese of Liverpool. Its benefice is united with that of St Luke, Stubshaw Cross. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Bryn Hall Colliery was a coal mine on the Lancashire Coalfield in Bryn, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester then in the historic county of Lancashire, England. The colliery was worked in 1866 by Crippin and Smethurst who left the partnership a year later. It was owned by Crippin and Sons in 1868, W and B J Crippen in 1871 and in 1873 William Crippin, the owner was sinking new pits. The owners between 1875 and 1886 were W and E F Crippen followed by E F Crippen and H H Crippen up to 1892.In 1908 the colliery had five shafts and employed 400 workers underground and 150 above ground. The colliery was managed by Peter Gorton, and his undermanagers were T Pownall, John Grundy and P Bullough.George Orwell visited the colliery in 1936 when he was gathering material for his book The Road to Wigan Pier. Today the colliery site is a privately owned and consists of agricultural land, housing and a water ski lake, to the north east of the Three Sisters Recreation Area.

Ashton Athletic Football Club is a football club based in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester, England. They are currently members of the North West Counties League Premier Division and play at Brocstedes Park. They are full members of the Lancashire County Football Association.

St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School is a centre of secondary education in Ashton-in-Makerfield in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It has around 1200 pupils and is a Leading Edge school. It is also the first Secondary School in the Wigan Borough to receive the Green Flag Award. It is in the Catholic parish of St Oswald's with most pupils coming from Haydock English Martyrs Catholic Primary School Haydock, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Hindley Green, St Oswald's Catholic Primary School, Ashton, St Benedicts Catholic Primary School, Hindley, and other schools in the boroughs of Wigan and St Helens. Mr Dumican is the headmaster of the school. In 2009, the school won the green flag eco-award which no other high school has. The school opened on 21 August 1961 and was formerly known as 'Blessed Edmund Arrowsmith.' It celebrated its Golden Jubilee of 50 years at a mass held at the Liverpool Cathedral on 29 June 2011.

Ashton-in-Makerfield railway station was a railway station serving the town of Ashton-in-Makerfield, although it was located in the neighbouring village of Haydock, formerly in Lancashire (now Merseyside), England.The station was located where Lodge Lane (A49) crossed the Liverpool, St Helens and South Lancashire Railway line from Lowton St Mary's to the original St Helens Central railway station.
