National Hispanic Cultural Center

West San Jose School, also known as Riverview School, is a historic former elementary school in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was built in 1936–37 as a Works Progress Administration project and operated as a school until 1975. It is now part of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The building was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

El Modelo (originally El Modelo Tortilla Factory) is a Mexican and New Mexican cuisine restaurant in the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, which was founded in 1929. It is located in the historic neighborhood of Barelas.

The Charles W. Lewis Building is a historic building in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places. It was built around 1882 by Charles W. Lewis (1844–1901), a native of Peralta, New Mexico who came to Albuquerque in 1873. Lewis was one of many Albuquerque residents to get involved in land speculation as the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway approached the town in the late 1870s. Once the railroad arrived, Lewis was able to subdivide a valuable piece of land near the tracks and used one of the lots for the building described here, which was probably built as rental housing. In 1915 it was reportedly being operated as a saloon.The building is a one-story, rectangular brick structure with a hipped roof supported by distinctive triangular brick corbels that wrap around all four sides. Originally front of the building had two doors and two sash windows; a third door was added later and the original transoms and window arches have been stuccoed over. The interior of the building has four rooms arranged in a linear plan, with a later addition at the rear.

The Lobo Special Events Platform is an inactive limited use platform on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter rail line. MRCOG created the station in 2009 at a cost of $1 million (equivalent to $1.3 million in 2021), split between MRCOG and The University of New Mexico. It was created as an incentive for residents of the region to use alternative transportation to attend University of New Mexico sports games as well as games of the Albuquerque Isotopes minor baseball team at Isotopes Park. The station was last used in 2009 and only ever opened during four sporting events, when it serviced a cumulative total of 227 passengers. Bus shuttles provided service from the platform to the stadiums. Each Rail Runner station contains an icon to express each community's identity. The icons representing this station are a Lobo, using the sports mascot from the University of New Mexico Athletic Department, and the logo for the Albuquerque Isotopes. The last time the Rail Runner stopped at the station was in December 2009, for the New Mexico Bowl. Afterwards, the station became inactive, and the Rail Runner website no longer acknowledges the platform on its website or any of its materials. MRCOG cited the costs associated with chartering buses and low ridership interest as reasons for not using the platform. Neither MRCOG, Rio Metro, or UNM have held any discussions regarding the future use of the station.

The Barelas-South Fourth Street Historic District is a historic district in Albuquerque, New Mexico which encompasses the commercial district along 4th Street in the Barelas neighborhood. The district extends from Stover Avenue in the north to Bridge Boulevard in the south, covering a distance of about 0.6 miles (0.97 km). It contains 45 contributing buildings, mostly automobile-oriented commercial buildings constructed between 1925 and 1956, though some houses which predate the commercial development are also present. The section of 4th Street included in the district was part of U.S. Route 66 from 1926 to 1937 and was also the main commercial area in Barelas.

The A&P Superintendent's House is a historic house in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was built in 1881 for Frank W. Smith, who used it as his base of operations while supervising construction of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad from Albuquerque to Needles, California. It is built from red sandstone, believed to have been quarried near Laguna Pueblo, which was the same material used to build the A&P's maintenance facilities on the opposite side of Second Street. Those buildings were replaced by the Santa Fe Railway Shops beginning in 1912, leaving the Superintendent's House as the city's only surviving building associated with the A&P. The house was listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties in 1975 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.The Superintendent's House is a one-and-a-half-story building with an intersecting gable roof and an open porch which wraps around the north and east sides. The walls are 18 inches (46 cm) thick and are constructed from sandstone blocks set in broken courses. The windows and door openings have stone lintels and sills with wood trim, and the porch features finely carved wooden pillars, cornices, and corbels ornamented with stars and arabesques. The north section of the house is side-gabled, with two dormers, and contains the living and dining rooms. The front-gabled south section contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen wing at the rear. The upper floor was originally constructed as servants' quarters but was later converted to a separate apartment.

The Hope Building is a historic commercial building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Built in 1894, it is one of the only surviving 19th century buildings in Downtown Albuquerque. It was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The former Santa Fe Railway Shops in Albuquerque, New Mexico, consist of eighteen surviving buildings erected between 1915 and 1925. The complex is located south of downtown in the Barelas neighborhood, bounded by Second Street, Hazeldine Avenue, Commercial Street, and Pacific Avenue. The shops were one of four major maintenance facilities constructed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the others being located in Topeka, Kansas, Cleburne, Texas, and San Bernardino, California. The railway shops were the largest employer in the city during the railroad's heyday. Currently they have been empty for years but a variety of plans have been proposed for the historic complex.

Barelas is an inner-city neighborhood of Albuquerque, New Mexico, located immediately south of Downtown. It consists of the triangular area bounded by Coal Avenue, the BNSF railroad tracks, and the Rio Grande. Originally a separate village, it was absorbed into Albuquerque during the railroad-fueled growth of the 1880s but still retains a distinct identity. The settlement was formally established in 1662, predating even Old Town as the oldest neighborhood in the city. Although it was long one of Albuquerque's most economically distressed areas, Barelas has seen significant development since the opening of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2000 and may be starting to experience gentrification. The neighborhood's main commercial area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Barelas-South Fourth Street Historic District.

The Barelas Community Center is a historic community center in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was built from 1940 to 1942 by the National Youth Administration (NYA), a New Deal agency which provided jobs and vocational training for young Americans. The NYA completed the Heights Community Center in 1940 and immediately started work on a second center, in cooperation with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), to serve the majority-Hispanic Barelas neighborhood. It was dedicated during the LULAC national convention in June, 1942. Heights and Barelas were the first two community centers in the city, and both are still in use as of 2021. The center offered various services including youth organizations and activities, adult education, and recreation. It was operated by LULAC from 1942 to 1944 and the Barelas Community Council from 1944 to 1955 before being absorbed by the city's Parks and Recreation Department in 1955. Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1956, writing in the Albuquerque Tribune that "The influence of these centers is making a great difference in the development of young people." The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.The community center is a one-story, U-shaped building, modeled after a traditional Spanish-style hacienda with a single row of rooms arranged around a central courtyard. It was designed by local architect A. W. Boehning in the Pueblo Revival style, with buttressed adobe walls, projecting vigas, and wooden lintels. The NYA constructed the building using labor-intensive traditional methods including hand-made adobe bricks and hand-cut vigas. The building contains a game room, a girls' club room, a kitchen, and a large community room with a stage. The community room is decorated with a series of six Native American-themed murals painted in 1957 by Albuquerque Indian School students under the direction of Teofilo Tafoya. A separate gymnasium was built in 1977 and was later connected to the main building in 2004.

South Broadway is an inner-city neighborhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico, located southeast of Downtown. The neighborhood developed between the 1890s and early 1900s and has a housing stock consisting mainly of smaller Victorian homes and bungalows. It was historically a diverse working-class neighborhood and the center of the city's African American community. Along with other New Mexican cities such as Clovis and Hobbs, the neighborhood is one of the centers of Black American culture and history in New Mexico. Today, a sizeable African American community has presence in this area outering downtown Albuquerque, as well as the area near Highland High School, which is about 8% Black, as of 2021.

Tingley Field (originally named Rio Grande Park) was a baseball stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which served as the home of professional baseball in Albuquerque from 1932 to 1968. It could accommodate 5000 fans, with seating for 3000. The stadium was located at the intersection of 10th Street and Atlantic Avenue, across the street from the Rio Grande Zoo.
