Belalp

Stausee Gibidum (Gibidum reservoir or "Stausee Gebidem") is a reservoir in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Its surface area is 0.21 km², shared by the municipalities of Naters and Riederalp. The construction of Gebidem dam was started in 1964 and completed by 1967. The arch dam has an elevation of 122 m and a crest length of 327 m.

The Sparrhorn (3,020 m) is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, located north of Belalp in the canton of Valais. It lies at the eastern end of the range located south of the Oberaletsch Glacier, west of the Aletsch Glacier. From Belalp a trail leads to its summit.

The Hohstock (3,225 m (10,581 ft) high) is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, located north of Belalp in the Swiss canton of Valais. It lies on the range east of the Unterbächhorn, between the valley of the Oberaletsch Glacier and the cirque of Belalp. In winter the Hohstock is part of a ski area. A ski lift culminates at 3,118 m (10,230 ft) on its southeastern side. A 150-metre (490 ft) tunnel connects it to the slopes on the southwestern side.

The Riederhorn (2,230 m) is a mountain overlooking Riederalp in the canton of Valais. It lies near the western end of the chain south of the Aletsch Glacier.

Bitsch (German pronunciation: [bɪtʃ]) is a municipality in the district of Raron in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

The Unterbächhorn is located in the Bernese Alps, southeast of the Nesthorn. The higher Northwest-Peak of the Unterbächhorn (3,620 m) lies on the ridge towards Nesthorn. The Southeast-Peak (3,554 m) is the highest summit overlooking Belalp in the canton of Valais. At its south-eastern flanks lies a glacier named Unnerbächgletscher.

The Oberaletsch Glacier (German: Oberaletschgletscher, meaning Upper Aletsch Glacier) is a valley glacier on the south side of the Bernese Alps, in the canton of Valais. It had a length of 9 km (5.6 mi) with an average width of just under 1 km (0.62 mi) and an area of about 22 km2 (8.5 sq mi) in 1973. The Oberaletsch Glacier system consists of two approximately equal arms. The eastern one takes its starting point on the south western flank of the Aletschhorn at around 3,700 m (12,100 ft), and joins the western arm (Beichgletscher) in the valley at the foot of the Nesthorn. Then the glacier flows to the south-east towards the Aletsch Glacier without reaching it. The glacier tongue ends at around 2,150 m (7,050 ft). During the Little Ice Age in the middle of the 19th century the glacier was part of the Aletsch Glacier. The Swiss Alpine Club Oberaletschhütte (2,640 m (8,660 ft)) is above the junction of the two glacier arms and has been accessible to hikers since 2005 with a new trail from Belalp.

Bitsch railway station (German: Bahnhof Bitsch) is a station in the municipality of Bitsch, in the Swiss canton of Valais. It is an intermediate and request stop on the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge Furka Oberalp line of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, served by local trains only.

The Simplon Tunnel (Simplontunnel, Traforo del Sempione or Galleria del Sempione) is a railway tunnel on the Simplon railway that connects Brig, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, through the Alps, providing a shortcut under the Simplon Pass route. It is straight except for short curves at either end. It consists of two single-track tunnels built nearly 15 years apart. The first to be opened is 19,803 m (64,970 ft) long; the second is 19,824 m (65,039 ft) long, making it the longest railway tunnel in the world for most of the twentieth century, from 1906 until 1982, when the Daishimizu Tunnel opened. Culminating at a height of only 705 m (2,313 ft) above sea level, the Simplon Tunnel was also the lowest direct Alpine crossing for 110 years, until the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016. The tunnel has a maximum rock overlay of approximately 2,150 m (7,050 ft), also a world record at the time. Temperatures up to 56 °C (133 °F) have been measured inside the tunnel. Work on the first tube of the Simplon Tunnel commenced in 1898. The Italian king Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and the president of the Swiss Confederation (presiding the Federal Council of Switzerland for that year) Ludwig Forrer opened the tunnel at Brig on 19 May 1906. The builders of the tunnel were Hermann Häustler and Hugo von Kager. Work on the second tube of the tunnel started in 1912 and it was opened in 1921.

The Massa (German pronunciation: [ˈmasa]) is a seven kilometre long river in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. It is mainly fed by the melt-water from the Aletsch Glacier. It passes through the Massa Gorge and flows into the Stausee Gibidum reservoir and onwards to its confluence with the Rhône. The whole area, including other glaciers, is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

The Nesthorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps. It is located in the Swiss canton of Valais north of Brig. The mountain lies between the Oberaletsch Glacier on the north and east side and the Gredetschtal on the south side. It is part of the subrange of the Bernese Alps that culminates at the Aletschhorn. The Nesthorn was first ascended from Belalp in 1865 by B. George and H. Mortimer, with Christian Almer and his son. Passing the base of the peak nearly to the head of the west branch of the Beich Firn (tributary of the Oberaletsch Glacier), they had on their left a steep iceslope, broken in five places by protruding masses of rock. Ascending the steep channel between the two masses nearest the Nesthorn they reached the ridge overlooking the Gredetschtal, turned to the left, and crossing a minor peak, and attained the summit in 6 hours, exclusive of halts.
