Sockburn Hall

All Saints Church is a ruined Church of England parish church in Sockburn, County Durham, England. A Grade I listed building, the church has pre- and post-Conquest mediaeval aspects, and is linked to the legends of the Sockburn Worm.

Sockburn is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Neasham, in the Darlington district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, England. It is situated at the apex of a meander of the River Tees, to the south of Darlington, known locally as the Sockburn Peninsula. Today, all that remains of the village is an early nineteenth-century mansion, a ruined church and a farmhouse built in the late eighteenth century.Sockburn is best known for: Important links with Lindisfarne and Celtic Christianity The discovery of Viking Age hogbacks. All Saints' Church is an Anglican church in Girsby, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. In the mediaeval period, the village of Girsby was served by All Saints' Church, Sockburn on the opposite side of the River Tees. It was abandoned in 1838, when a new church was built in the village. The Victoria County History describes the Victorian church as "an uninteresting building", while the National Churches Trust calls it a "simple country church". It was grade II listed in 1988. The church is built of sandstone with a concrete tile roof. It consists of a nave and a chancel in one unit, and a south porch. On the west gable is a gabled bellcote with two round-arched openings. The porch is gabled, and contains a round-arched entrance with a chamfered surround, and the windows in the church have round-arched heads. The inside is plastered and plain, with a wall monument dating from 1788.

Girsby is a village and civil parish in the former Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. The village lies on high ground on the eastern bank of the River Tees. Hornby is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on a minor road between Great Smeaton and Appleton Wiske.It lies roughly 9 miles (14 km) from Northallerton, 9 miles (14 km) from Darlington, and 7 miles (11 km) from Yarm.According to the 2001 census, Hornby had a population of 206, which increased in the 2011 census to 238. The village has very few amenities. There is a small church, a telephone box and a post box. The village pub is called the "Grange Arms".

Smeaton Manor is a historic building in Great Smeaton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The country house was designed by Philip Webb for Arthur and Ada Fitzpatrick Godman, and constructed between 1877 and 1879. The middle of its three chimneys was later removed, and the main staircase was replaced in the 1950s. Morris & Co. decorated the house and supplied the carpets and curtains, the work since having been destroyed. The garden was laid out to a design by Webb. The house and its stables were separately grade II listed in 1953. The house is built of red brick with a moulded cornice, overhanging eaves, and a hipped pantile roof. It has two storeys and attics, and five bays, and flanking gabled single-bay wings. The ground floor of the symmetrical garden front projects slightly under a pantile roof, and the windows are sashes with mullions in segmental arches. In the upper floor are pilasters, and the attic contains three flat-headed dormers. In the centre of the north front is the main entrance, with a porch, and a doorway with a quoined moulded stone architrave and a cornice, and the ground floor windows have cogged hood moulds. The stables are also built of red brick, and they have pantile roofs. In the centre is a two-storey clock tower flanked by taller chimneys. This contains a segmental carriage arch with an oversailing gabled roof. Above it is a diamond-shaped clock face, a series of pigeon holes, a roof with coping and kneelers, and a fox weathervane. The tower is flanked by single-storey wings, connecting on the left to a single-bay cottage, with a three-light window, a two-light dormer and a pyramidal roof. On the right is a stable block stretching back for eight bays. Inside, the original stable boxes survive.

Little Smeaton is a hamlet and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England.

Low Dinsdale Manor is a privately owned, much altered, and extended medieval moated fortified manor house situated on the north bank of the River Tees at Low Dinsdale, near Darlington, County Durham, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. The manor was owned by the Surtees family from the 12th century. Several members of the Surtees of Dinsdale family served as High Sheriff of Northumberland. In 1511 on the death of the last male of the family it passed to his daughter Katherine Place. Rowland Place was High Sheriff of Durham in 1654. The house was the birthplace of his son artist Francis Place (1647–1728). In 1718 the manor was sold to Cuthbert Routh and in 1770 to John Lambton of Lambton. In 1789 a mineral spring was discovered on the estate and a Spa was established. Lambton's son John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham built Dinsdale Spa Hotel in 1829. In 1844 the Earl sold the manor to Henry George Surtees (High Sheriff of Durham 1862) a descendant of the ancient family. He substantially extended and altered the house in 1876 adding new bays to the medieval core and two cross-gabled wings. In 1914 the manor was sold to Sir Henry Havelock-Allan Bt. A large part of the estate was sold for the creation of a golf course.

Low Dinsdale is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Neasham, in the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of Durham, England. The parish population taken at the 2011 census was 871. It is situated a few miles to the south-east of Darlington. On 1 April 2016 the parish was abolished and merged with Neasham and Middleton St. George.Historically the village was commonly known as Dinsdale. "Low" was added to distinguish the village from the neighbouring village of Over Dinsdale, on the opposite bank of the River Tees in North Yorkshire. The toponym was recorded in Domesday Book as Dignesale and Dirneshale, and recorded in 1088 as Detnisale. The name is Old English and means either "nook of land belonging to a man named Dyttin" or "nook of land belonging to Deighton". Deighton was in the same wapentake (Allerton) as Over Dinsdale.Listed buildings include Low Dinsdale Manor and Dinsdale Park a former Spa hotel.

Croft was a rural district in the North Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the Darlington rural sanitary district which was in the North Riding (the rest forming Darlington Rural District in County Durham). It was named after Croft-on-Tees. It was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974. The parishes of Girsby and Over Dinsdale went to form part of the new North Yorkshire district of Hambleton, with the rest going to the Richmondshire district.

Over Dinsdale is a small village and civil parish in the former Local Government District of Hambleton in North Yorkshire, England. The population of the village (including Girsby) taken at the 2011 census was 151. The village straddles an ancient Roman road on the border with County Durham, on a peninsula in the River Tees, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) from Darlington and 8.5 miles (13.7 km) from Yarm. The Teesdale Way passes through the village. Historically the village was a township in the ancient parish of Sockburn, a parish divided by the River Tees between the North Riding of Yorkshire (which included Over Dinsdale) and County Durham (which included the township of Sockburn). Over Dinsdale became a separate civil parish in 1866.The neighbouring village of Low Dinsdale is across the river in County Durham.
