Chelmsford

The City of Chelmsford () is a local government district in Essex, England. It is named after its main settlement, Chelmsford, which is also the county town of Essex. On 1 June 2012 Chelmsford was granted city status to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

The current Stone Bridge in Chelmsford, Essex, England, was commissioned in 1784 by the Essex Court of Quarter Sessions, who had responsibility for the crossing. The work was entrusted to John Johnson, the county surveyor for Essex from 1782 to 1812. The first stone was lain on 5 October 1785, with a temporary bridge slightly down river allowing a crossing while the work was undertaken. Stone was brought by sea from Dorset to Maldon and then transferred to carts to be taken through Danbury before reaching Chelmsford. It became a Grade II listed structure in 1949.

Chelmsford Cathedral in the city of Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom, is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, St Peter and St Cedd. It became a cathedral when the Anglican Diocese of Chelmsford was created in 1914 and is the seat of the Bishop of Chelmsford.

The Diocese of Chelmsford is a Church of England diocese, part of the Province of Canterbury. It was created on 23 January 1914 from part of the Diocese of St Albans. It covers Essex and part of East London. Since 1984 it is divided into three episcopal areas, each with its own area bishop. The diocese covers around 1,500 square miles (3,900 km2) with a population of more than 3 million. It has 463 parishes and 588 churches.

The New Street Works was a manufacturing plant built for the Marconi Company in Chelmsford, England in 1912. It is credited as being the first purpose-built radio factory in the world.

The County Ground in Chelmsford, Essex, has been the official home ground of Essex County Cricket Club since 1967. It has been used for first-class cricket since 1925 and List A matches since 1969. The capacity is 6,500, mostly in single-tier seating with a single double-tiered stand. The pavilion was completed in the 1970s.

Our Lady Immaculate Church (formerly the Church of the Immaculate Conception) is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Chelmsford, Essex, England. It was founded in 1845, opened in 1847 and designed by Joseph John Scoles. It is situated on New London Road, next to Our Lady Immaculate Primary School, close to the junction with Anchor Street, in the city centre. It is served by the Premonstratensians (also known as the Norbertines) from their only community in the UK, St. Philip's Priory.

Essex Police Museum is a museum in Chelmsford, Essex, covering the history of policing in the county of Essex since 1840, including the Essex Constabulary and such borough forces as those for Colchester and Southend-on-Sea. Established in 1992, it also covers crimes solved by those forces, such as the Rayleigh bath chair murder, and officers killed in the line of duty, such as PC George Gutteridge. Its collections include 16 oil paintings, all but two of which are 20th-century portraits of modern and historical officers by Detective Sergeant Jack Bridge.
