Battle of Torrington

Great Torrington (often abbreviated to Torrington, though the villages of Little Torrington and Black Torrington are situated in the same region) is a market town in Devon, England. Parts of it are sited on high ground with steep drops down to the River Torridge below, with the lower-lying parts of the town prone to occasional flooding. Torrington is in the centre of Tarka Country, a landscape captured by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927. Great Torrington has one of the most active volunteering communities in the United Kingdom.In July 2019, Great Torrington was reported to be the healthiest place to live in Britain. Researchers from the University of Liverpool found that the area had low levels of pollution, good access to green space and health services, along with few retail outlets.

The Pannier Market in Great Torrington in Devon is a Victorian pannier market of 12 small indoor shops - six either side of a narrow cobbled lane built in 1842 and restored in 1999. The Market House building at the front of the complex has been a Grade II* listed building on the Historic England Register since 1951.

Torrington Football Club are an English association football club based in Great Torrington, Devon. Founded in 1908, the club currently compete in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East. Based at Vicarage Field, Torrington have previously played in the Western League, South Western League and Devon and Exeter League, and rejoined the North Devon League in 2007. Known by the nicknames "Torrie" and "The Super Greens", Torrington have won a number of local honours, including one Western League Division One title, five North Devon League Premier Division titles and one North Devon League Senior Division title. They have also won a number of local cup tournaments, including the Combe Martin Cup, Arlington Cup and Torridge Cup.

Great Torrington Town Hall is a municipal building in the High Street, Great Torrington, Devon, England. The town hall, which is the meeting place of Great Torrington Town Council, is a Grade II listed building.

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Church of England parish church in Great Torrington, Devon. It has been a Grade II* listed building since 1951.As a traditional catholic parish, it is a member of Forward in Faith and receives alternative episcopal oversight from the Bishop of Oswestry.

There are two hills named Castle Hill within the immediate environs of Great Torrington in Devon, England. Palmer House is a grade II* listed Georgian residence built in 1752 in the town of Great Torrington, North Devon, England. It is notable as it retains many original features, including fine ornate plaster ceilings, marble and carved fireplaces, mahogany doors and a fine balustraded staircase.

The Rolle Canal (or Torrington Canal) in north Devon, England, extends from its mouth into the River Torridge at Landcross 6 miles southwards to the industrial mills and corn-mills at Town Mills, Rosemoor, Great Torrington and beyond to Healand Docks and weir on the Torridge, where survive the ruins of Lord Rolle's limekilns, upstream of today's Rosemoor Garden. Town Mills were built by Lord Rolle and were powered by a stream which flowed past his seat of Stevenstone to the east of Great Torrington and also supplied water to the canal. Rosemoor and North and South Healand farms were part of Lord Rolle's Stevenstone estate on the east bank of the Torridge.

Great Torrington School is a mixed secondary school located in Great Torrington in the English county of Devon.Previously a foundation school administered by Devon County Council, Great Torrington School was converted to academy status on 1 August 2011. However the school continues to coordinate with Devon County Council for admissions. Pupils are normally admitted from Beaford Primary School, Buckland Brewer Primary School, Dolton CE Primary School, Great Torrington Junior School, Horwood & Newton Tracey Primary School, Langtree Community School, Monkleigh Primary School, Shebbear Community School, The Clinton CE Primary School and West & East Putford School.Following a summer 2018 protest in which male pupils wore skirts and female pupils supported them by wearing trousers, accompanied by a petition, the school agreed in 2019 that pupils would be permitted to wear shorts during the summer term, while still requiring them to adhere to other aspects of the school's uniform policy.

The Torrington and Marland Railway was a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge built to carry clay from the quarries at Clay Moor to Torrington in north Devon.

Taddiport is a hamlet in North Devon, England, near Great Torrington. The name is believed to derive from toad, a place where toads were found. In the Middle Ages it was a leper colony. A field system next to the hamlet is still divided up as for the medieval strip system of farming. During the years of operation of the Rolle Canal the canal had a quay across the river Torridge from Taddiport. Taddiport appears on the early 15th century Evesham world map; its inclusion has led many to believe that the map-maker hailed from the small hamlet.

RHS Garden Rosemoor is a public display garden run by the Royal Horticultural Society in north Devon, England. Rosemoor is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Great Torrington on the A3124 road to Exeter. It is surrounded by over 100 acres (40 ha) of woodland with the River Torridge running along the western border. Features include a rose garden with about 2,000 rose plants; an arboretum; herb, fruit and vegetable gardens; and an alpine house. A variety of clematis introduced as part of the RHS Bicentenary Plant Collection is named after the garden.
