Alken, Belgium

Alken is a railway station in the municipality of Alken, Limburg, Belgium. The station opened on 8 December 1847 and is located on line 21. The train services are operated by National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS). The first station building opened in 1847. The current building dates from 1903.

Sint-Lambrechts-Herk (Dutch pronunciation: [sɪnt ˈlɑmbrɛxts ˈɦɛrk]; French: Herck-Saint-Lambert, pronounced [ɛʁk sɛ̃ lɑ̃bɛʁ]) is a sub-municipality of the city of Hasselt located in the province of Limburg, Flemish Region, Belgium. It was a separate municipality until 1977. On 1 January 1977, it was merged into Hasselt.

Wellen (Dutch pronunciation: ['ʋɛlə(n)] ; Limburgish: Wille) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On 1 January 2018, Wellen had a total population of 7,402. The total area is 26.72 km² with a population density of 266 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Wellen, Berlingen, Herten and Ulbeek. Other population centres and hamlets include: Bos, Beurs, Kukkelberg, Langenakker, Oetersloven, Overbroek, Russelt, and Vrolingen.

Wimmertingen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʋɪmərˌtɪŋə(n)]) is a sub-municipality of the city of Hasselt located in the province of Limburg, Flemish Region, Belgium. It was a separate municipality until 1977. On 1 January 1977, it was merged into Hasselt.

The Battle of Hasselt was fought on 8 August 1831 during the Ten Days' Campaign. It was an important defeat for the outnumbered Belgian Army of the Meuse and a victory for the Dutch invasion force.

Hasselt railway station (Dutch: Station Hasselt, French: Gare d'Hasselt) is a railway station in Hasselt, Limburg, Belgium. The station opened on 24 October 1843 and it is located at 21 Stationsplein (Station Square). It is served by railway lines 15, 21, 21A, 34 and 35. The train services are operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB).

The Virga Jesse Basilica (Dutch: Virga Jessebasiliek) is a basilica, formerly known as the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, in Hasselt, Belgium. It dates back to the 14th century, approximately 1334. The original chapel was replaced with the current church, which was completed in 1731. Prior to being elevated to the status of a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1998, it was considered an auxiliary church of the church of St. Quentin, now St. Quentin Cathedral. The church and neighboring houses were heavily damaged by bombing during World War II in 1944. The rebuilt church, now the third church to be built in the same place, was dedicated to the then-bishop of Liège in 1951.The basilica is best known for the 14th century statue of Virga Jesse, which is paraded through the streets of Hasselt every seven years.

Hasselt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɑsəlt] , Limburgish: [ˈɦɑsəlt], French: [asɛlt]) is a Belgian city and municipality, and capital and largest city of the province of Limburg in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is known for its former branding as the "Capital of Taste", owing to its local distilleries of Jenever, the Hasselt Jenever Festival, and Hasselt speculaas.As of 1 August 2023, Hasselt had a total population of 80,846. The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Hasselt proper, Kermt, Kuringen, Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Spalbeek, Stevoort, Stokrooie, and Wimmertingen, as well as the hamlets and parishes of Kiewit, Godsheide and Rapertingen. Hasselt is located in between the Campine region, north of the Demer river, and the Hesbaye region, to the south. On a larger scale, it is also situated in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. Both the Demer river and the Albert Canal run through the municipality.

St. Quentin's Cathedral (Dutch: Sint-Quintinuskathedraal), also called Hasselt Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Hasselt Belgium. Its construction began in the 11th century, and continued for two centuries. It was elevated to the status of cathedral in 1967 when the Diocese of Hasselt was created.

Rullingen Castle (Dutch: Kasteel van Rullingen) is a castle in Kuttekoven in the municipality of Borgloon, province of Limburg, Belgium. Its situation in the valley of the Herk is very scenic. The first recorded lord of Rullingen was Eggebert van Ruelingen, a vassal of Arnold II, Count of Loon (d 1138 or -39). The medieval castle was reconstructed, probably in the 1630s, as a typical moated castle of the Meuse valley, although the moat has been filled up in more recent times. A serious fire in 1920 destroyed part of the building, and reconstruction works lasted from 1921 to 1935. The castle was acquired by the government of the province of Belgian Limburg. It is now used as a hotel.

The Diocese of Hasselt (Latin: Dioecesis Hasseletensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. Comprising the whole of Belgian Limburg, the diocese was created in 1967 out of the Diocese of Liège. It is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. The cathedra is found within St. Quentin's Cathedral in Hasselt.

Onzelievehereboom was the name of a 1200-year-old oak tree in Kortessem, Belgium, dedicated by popular piety to Onze Lieve Here, "Our Dear Lord". It was believed to be the oldest tree in Belgium when it was overthrown by a storm 18 July 2009.
