Union Bridge, Aberdeen

Union Street is a major street and shopping thoroughfare in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is named after the Acts of Union 1800 with Ireland. The street is approximately one mile long (0.8 miles) and a feat of engineering skill involving the partial levelling of St. Catherine's Hill and the building of arches to carry the street over Putachieside. The Denburn Valley was crossed by Union Street by Union Bridge (constructed 1801–05). The Union Bridge holds the record of the 'Worlds largest single span granite bridge' at 130 feet (40 m) across.

Union Terrace is a single carriageway street in the city centre of Aberdeen. At the south end, it has a junction with Union Street, at Union Bridge and Bridge Street; and at the north end, it has a junction with Rosemount Viaduct, with the Central Library and His Majesty's Theatre on that street. The street hosts the Aberdeen International Market regularly.Union Terrace Gardens are in the Denburn Valley, adjacent to Union Terrace. There are currently plans to enhance the gardens, with one to put an art centre which will blend with the landscape, the other to create a civic square levelling the gardens and bringing them up to street level. There is also a statue of Robert Burns opposite the Caledonian Hotel. A granite statue of Edward VII was installed at the junction of Union Terrace with Union Street. It was removed in March 2021 as part of the redevelopment of Union Terrace Gardens.

Belmont Street is a north-south street in the centre of Aberdeen, Scotland that runs perpendicular to Union Street. Belmont Street originated with the late 18th century expansion of the town. It was part of an expansion out of the town into suburbs to the west by the towns richer denizens. For example, Thomas Menzies of Pitfodels, one of Aberdeen's wealthiest merchants of the time, moved from his long-standing town house on Castle Street (which is now the site of the North of Scotland Bank) to a five-bay two-storey house on Belmont Street in 1788. The street overlooked the valley of the River Denburn and was developed on vacant ground there in the 1780s, housing there initially comprising the domiciles of the wealthy, typified by large town houses with gardens running down to the river. A few of the houses from the late 18th century still survive on Belmont Street today, including Menzies'.There were several churches on Belmont Street. The Triple Kirks, a free church established in 1844 at the junction of Belmont Street and Schoolhill, was deliberately sited with the intention of rivalling the established "Auld Kirk" of St Nicholas parish. A building to house the unification of the East, South, and West free churches of the town, it was designed by Archibald Simpson. There is now a pub, the Triple Kirks, on the site. The South Church is also on Belmont Street. In November 1779, the anti-Burgher United Presbyterians of north Aberdeen moved to a purpose-built 800-seat church on Belmont Street. The Relief United Presbyterians established a Belmont Street congregation a little after 1778, when funds began to be raised for a 1000-seat church. In 1828, the Belmont Chapel of Ease, as it had come to be, became a fully fledged parish church, under the ministership of Reverend John Bryce.

The Belmont Cinema is an arthouse cinema on Belmont Street, Aberdeen, Scotland and is the last remaining independent cinema in the city. The cinema building is the property of Aberdeen City Council and is temporarily closed following the collapse of its former operator, the Centre for the Moving Image (CMI), in 2022. Belmont Community Cinema Ltd were named by Aberdeen City Council as preferred operator for the site in September 2023, with an expected reopening date of late 2024. The building was open as part of Aberdeen's 2024 Doors Open Day on 7 and 8 September.

The Academy Aberdeen, previously known as "The Academy Shopping Centre", is located on the corner of Belmont Street and Schoolhill in the main shopping district of Aberdeen, Scotland. As the name suggests, it is a former Victorian secondary school renovated into a modern shopping centre.The central courtyard of the centre has hosted many events such as fashion shows, dance displays, comedy shows, car displays and live music performances. It is now used for al fresco dining.

The Triple Kirks in Aberdeen, Scotland were built at the time of the Disruption of 1843 when the Free Church of Scotland (the Free Kirk) split from the Church of Scotland (the Kirk). The three churches were all part of a single building with a tall spire but they housed separate congregations. The East Free Kirk was completed 1843 followed by the West Free Kirk and South Free Kirk early the following year. From about 1966 the building progressively fell into disuse and became mostly ruinous but with the spire remaining.

James Dun's House is located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is located at Schoolhill and was a popular museum and gallery with changing exhibitions, but in 2001 was converted into a hairdresser and cafe. It was built in 1769 and was owned by James Dun who was the rector of Aberdeen Grammar School which used to be located on Schoolhill before being moved in the 19th century.

Robert Gordon University, commonly called RGU, is a public university in the city of Aberdeen, Scotland. It became a university in 1992, and originated from an educational institution founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a prosperous Aberdeen merchant, and various institutions which provided adult and technical education in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of two universities in the city, the other being the University of Aberdeen. RGU is a campus university and its single campus in Aberdeen is at Garthdee, in the south-west of the city. The university awards degrees in a wide range of disciplines from BA/BSc to PhD, primarily in professional, technical, health and artistic disciplines and those most applicable to business and industry. A number of traditional academic degree programmes are also offered, such as in the social sciences. In addition, the university's academic and research staff produce research in a number of areas.

The Garthdee campus is the Robert Gordon University's main campus, where all academic departments are located and teaching and research takes place. The campus is located in parkland on the outskirts of the city of Aberdeen and noted for its modern architecture. For the university's historic Administration Building in Aberdeen city centre, see the main article. The Garthdee campus is situated in the south-west of the city, on the banks of the River Dee. For much of its history it was a greenfield site, with parts used as the gardens and estate of the manor of Garthdee House, farmland, and open meadows. The first university buildings were in use from the 1950s, with major additional developments in the 1960s, 1990s, 2000s and early 2010s. The design concept produced in the mid-1990s by architects Norman Foster + Partners was to separate the site into three zones; to the north, by the road, would be car parking; a central zone would contain the main buildings, and the southern boundary by the riverbank would be for parkland and wildlife. Ancient lines of beech trees and woodlands were retained in the concept. It also included a "university street" running east-west and connecting the buildings, which were to be "pavilions in the landscape". These elements of the design concept have been more or less adhered to in subsequent developments by other architects.

The Trinity Centre (known as "The Mall Aberdeen" from 2006 to Dec 2009, and before that as Trinity Shopping Centre) is a one floor shopping centre in Aberdeen, Scotland. It has a two level car park. There are 408 spaces and the main entrance is on Wapping Street. Wider spaces are available for parents and children and the disabled. Car Valeting services are now also provided. The centre is located in the middle of the city with entrances on Union Street, Bridge Street and Guild Street. There is also an underground walkway that leads to Aberdeen railway station. It is built over the Aberdeen–Inverness line.

St John the Evangelist — also known as St John's — off Crown Street is a Scottish Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Several Aberdeen trades hospitals were built by the merchants and trades associations of Aberdeen ("New" and Old Aberdeen) from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Traditionally hospitals had been built by the church. In addition to hospitals that served the needs of the poor and elderly, "hospitals" were built as schools. Robert Gordon's College was founded by a wealthy merchant in 1731. In "Royal" Aberdeen and Old Aberdeen the incorporated trades formed associations to serve the needs of the craftsmen. Similar incorporated trades associations are to be found in Elgin, Edinburgh, Irvine, Stirling, Dundee, Kirkcubright and Glasgow.In addition to such hospitals, there were "correction houses" and workhouses or poorhouses.
