Thornton, Lancashire

Thornton–Cleveleys (originally simply named Cleveleys) was a railway station in England which served the Lancashire village of Thornton and town of Cleveleys. Located on the now disused line between Poulton-le-Fylde and Fleetwood, the station also had a shunting yard for the making-up of freight trains for Preston and beyond. During its life it was also known at times as Thornton station and Thornton for Cleveleys station. In the 1860s and early 1870s the line was of great importance, being the direct route from London to Glasgow. Before the Shap route was opened, passengers (allegedly including Queen Victoria) would travel from Euston to Fleetwood and then onwards via steamer to Scotland. The original station was opened in April 1865, and was named Cleveleys. It was to the south of Station Road in Thornton, near an older halt called Ramper Road. The Station Master's house and station building can still be seen in use as a private residence. The station was renamed Thornton for Cleveleys on 1 April 1905. This station closed in 1927 when the new station (the first to be built by the LMS) opened to the north of the level crossing. In February 1953, the station was renamed again, this time to Thornton–Cleveleys. Rationalised in the 1950s and 1960s, and affected by the ending of the ferry from Fleetwood to the Isle of Man, the station eventually closed on 1 June 1970, when the Fleetwood line was closed to passengers. Freight continued on the line to nearby Burn Naze until 1999.

Four Lane Ends is a road junction in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England. It is formed by the meeting of the north–south-running Fleetwood Road and the east–west-bound Victoria Road (formerly known as Ramper Road), the B5412. The names of both roads change in line with their directions at the junction, with Fleetwood Road North (leading to and from Fleetwood) becoming Fleetwood Road South (leading to and from the Norcross Roundabout primarily) and Victoria Road East (leading to and from Thornton Centre) becomes Victoria Road West (leading to and from Cleveleys). At the northeastern corner, accessed from Fleetwood Road North, stands the Rushlands, a former doctor's home and retirement home, built around 1928. It is now a hotel.A former NatWest Bank building stands in the southeastern corner. It replaced Swarbricks Farm.The Grade II listed Thornton-Cleveleys War Memorial, erected in 1923, stands at southwestern corner of the junction.Thornton's public library (opened in 1938) and Thornton Little Theatre (formerly Thornton Lecture Hall) occupy the northwestern corner.

Erected in 1923, the Thornton-Cleveleys War Memorial is located in the English conurbation of Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire. A Grade II listed structure, it stands in a small garden in the southwestern corner of a junction known as Four Lane Ends.The war memorial, designed by Albert Toft and sculpted by W. L. Cookson, consists of a bronze statue depicting a soldier standing with a rifle. The statue is on a square granite shaft, on a tapered plinth, on a base of two steps. On the shaft is an inscription and the names of those lost in the First World War. In front and at the sides of the memorial are three granite tablets in the form of open books with the names of those lost in the Second World War. Colonel Hugh Jeudwine was present at the memorial's unveiling on 11 November 1923.

Trunnah Farmhouse is an historic building on Woodland Avenue in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England. A former farmhouse with attached barn, dating to 1769, it is in rendered brick with a slate roof. The house has two storeys and a symmetrical front of two bays that contain an oval datestone. Most of the windows are sashes, and there is also a French window. At the right end are stone quoins. An oval datestone on the building states "R M J S 1769".

Norcross Roundabout is a major traffic roundabout in the English village of Thornton, Lancashire. It was built at the junction of the A585, the B5268 Fleetwood Road South and Norcross Lane. As of 2020, an average of 28,000 vehicles utilise the roundabout each day.The roundabout separates Thornton, to the north and northeast, from an area known as Norcross, beyond the roundabout to the southwest, and from Carleton to the south and southeast. It is part of a section of the A585 called Amounderness Way. It is one of five roundabouts on Amounderness Way, the others being (from the southeast to the northwest): the Victoria Road Roundabout, between Thornton and Cleveleys; and three in Fleetwood, shortly before the road's northern terminus. The one to the east of Norcross Roundabout, known as the River Wyre Roundabout, was removed in 2021.A major revamp of the roundabout, undertaken between July 2019 and April 2020, was described by motorists after its completion as "total hell", with a lack of signage cited as the main reason. Despite this, Carnell, the contractors who carried out the project, were shortlisted for Team of the Year at the national Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Awards. The project increased the size of the roundabout, including widening its approaches, as well as adding traffic lights. The project cost £12.3 million, funded by a national £220 million congestion relief programme.Also in 2020, a study by Reach Data Unit named Norcross Roundabout the second-most-dangerous roundabout in Lancashire, after the A589 roundabout in Morecambe.

Marsh Mill is an 18th-century tower windmill in Thornton, Lancashire, England. It was built in 1794 by Ralph Slater for local landowner Bold Hesketh. It functioned as a corn mill until the 1920s and has been fully restored. It is a good example of a complete English windmill and has been designated a Grade II* listed building.

Brook Farm in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England, was built in 1892. At that time, it was one of the only properties in the area on what was then its farmland. Its earliest known reference (erroneously named Brooks Farm Cottages) in literature is in the 1918 edition of The London Gazette in 1918. In the 1915 edition of The Dairy periodical, a Mrs. S. A. Keirby is stated as owning a dairy farm here.Originally a standalone building, two bays wide, it was extended to the west in the mid–20th century, adding two properties. Several hundred houses were built on and around its former farmland in the late 20th century, on land abutting the former site of Imperial Chemical Industries which is known to be contaminated.

Poolfoot Cottage is an historic building on Heys Street in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England. Originally a pair of cottages, the buildings were later converted into a single dwelling. It has cobble walls, now rendered and whitewashed, with a slate roof. It is in a single storey with five bays. The windows vary and include French windows, a sliding sash window, and a bay window. On the front is a modern porch.

Stanah Primary School (formerly Stanah County Primary School and Stanah Community Primary School) is an English mixed primary school located in the Stanah area of Thornton, Lancashire. Built in the 1960s, the school, located on Lambs Road (or, as it is known locally, Lambs Hill), has around 400 pupils, aged 4 to 11. Its head teacher is H. M. Clough. He replaced Ian Todd who, after three-and-a-half years as head, took up a position at the University of Cumbria in January 2010. Mr. Todd's predecessor was Tony Ford, who retired in the summer of 2006 after twelve years in the role. One of the earlier and long-serving head teachers was Jean Fisher. Another was Mr. Evans, who was headmaster in the 1970s. The school comprises two separate prefabricated buildings. A smaller annex (infants) is attended by the foundation class and years 1 and 2. For year 3, the children move into the larger main building (juniors). The smaller building was mothballed in the early 1980s when school rolls dropped, but it was renovated and reopened around a decade later. The infants building also houses a preschool nursery originally called Stanah Sunflowers but which was then bought and renamed to Oak Tree Nursery. On the junior's building stands the school's distinctive chimney.

ICI Hillhouse was a chlorine-production facility in Lancashire, England. A division of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), it was active between 1941 and 1992. Its triangular footprint spread from the banks of the River Wyre at Stanah in the east, to Hillylaid Road in the southwest, to the southern edge of Fleetwood in the north. Its entrances were on Hillylaid Road (via the extant gate at the end of today's The Hawthorns) and on Butts Road in Burn Naze. Burn Naze Halt railway station served those arriving by train. ICI Hillhouse expanded on a United Alkali Company venture begun in 1890. ICI General Chemical Divisions purchased the assets of Hillhouse and Burn Hall Works from the Ministry of Supply. A power plant was built on today's Bourne Way in 1958, providing ICI with electricity and steam power. A railway line—part of the Fleetwood branch line—was built to connect Burn Naze to Poulton-le-Fylde and beyond. The line still exists today, although the sidings at Burn Naze were removed after all freight traffic ceased in 1999. Water from the Lancaster Canal, beside Nateby Hall bridge, was extracted by ICI Hillhouse via a 25-year lease. Around 6,000 megalitres (1.3 million gallons) of water was obtained. The boreholes the facility previously used resulted in the water turning brackish due to a fault line which runs between Barrow-in-Furness and the Fylde. ICI Hillhouse closed in 1992, after which the Burn Naze area, where most of the workers lived, subsequently suffered a downturn in fortunes. The chlorine plant was demolished in 1994. The power station was demolished in 2007; its chimney followed on 7 November 2009. In 1999, Glasgow-based NPL Estates reached a £50 million agreement with ICI to create new housing, leisure, supermarket and shopping facilities on the Burn Naze portion of the land. Another section became the Hillhouse Enterprise Zone. A plaque beside the Thornton-Cleveleys War Memorial at Four Lane Ends honours ICI Hillhouse workers who served in the first and second World Wars. Poulton & Wyre Railway Society have placed a plaque honouring the wars' soldiers at Burn Naze Halt.

Raikes Farmhouse is an historic building in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England. Replacing a building dating from at least 1595, the current structure was built in 1692, with a rear extension added in the 19th century. It has been designated a Grade II listed building by Historic England. The property is located on Raikes Road, just southeast of its junction (a roundabout) with Stanah Road and Hillylaid Road. The property was renovated sometime between 2011 and 2019, a process that removed its pebbledashing. In 2014, a planning application was made to demolish three barns and erect six dwellings on the property, but the application was later withdrawn.
