Shannock Historic District

Kenyon is a small village in the town of Richmond near its border with the town of Charlestown in the U.S. state of Rhode Island.

The Samuel Clarke House is a residential structure dating to c. 1691. It's one of the earliest surviving houses in the State of Rhode Island. It is the central building of the “Samuel Clarke Farm”, now a 40-acre parcel in Kenyon, Rhode Island, within the Town of Richmond. The farm is bordered to the west by the Beaver River. This property was originally part of a larger parcel (one mile wide and five miles long) that was sold in 1662 by the Niantic Sachem Wanumachon. This historic land transaction is known as the Stanton Purchase. Joseph Clarke (1642—1727) purchased approximately 200 acres of the Stanton Purchase land the following year. By 1691 Joseph Clarke had transferred a parcel to his son, Samuel (1672-1769). Samuel Clarke built the original portion of the farmhouse on this land in about 1691. A large carved granite block in the keeping room fireplace, just below the original beehive bake oven, memorializes this date. The original farmhouse was modified and expanded in the 18th century. The gambrel-roofed house follows a typical five-room plan, often constructed in 18th century Rhode Island. Remarkably, the house retains its original exterior wide oak weatherboards - on the north side, early 18th-century window sash and frames, a massive granite central chimney with four fireplaces and nearly all of its original period interior architectural detail. The kitchen addition to the north was added in the late 19th century. Extant farm buildings include a red-painted 19th-century barn, a corn crib - on its original granite piers, carriage and wood sheds, an outhouse, a stone blacksmith's shop and forge, a stone root cellar, and a one-room schoolhouse (built in 1812). A well-preserved Clarke Family cemetery is also located on the property. The farm remained in the Clarke family until 1950. The last Clarke family owner was Elizabeth Stanton Knowles Marvel, (Mrs. Frederick W. Marvel - 1874-1950). At the time of her death the farm encompassed over 500 acres. The house and farm buildings have been restored and the open land re-cultivated. On February 4, 2019 the Samuel Clarke Farm was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sly Fox Den Too is an Indigenous restaurant in Charlestown, Rhode Island. The menu has included three-sisters succotash, venison sandwiches, and smoked fish. The business earned Sherry Pocknett a James Beard Foundation Award in the Best Chef: Northeast category.

Carolina is a village that straddles the border of the towns of Charlestown and Richmond on the Pawcatuck River in Washington County, Rhode Island. Rhode Island Route 112 passes through the village. Carolina is identified as a census-designated place, with a population of 970 at the 2010 census.

The Albert S. Potter Octagon House (also known simply as the Octagon House) is an historic octagonal house located at 4 Carolina Main Street (Rhode Island Route 112) on the corner of Shannock Hill Road in the village of Carolina in Richmond, Rhode Island. It was built by watchmaker Albert S. Potter in 1857. Potter reportedly did his watchmaking in the octagonal cupola atop the two-story house. The building is now covered with asbestos siding and is owned by the Carolina Preservation and Band Society. The Albert S. Potter Octagon House is a contributing property in the Carolina Village Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1974.

The John Hoxsie House, also known as the Old Kenyon Farm, is an historic farmstead in Richmond, Rhode Island. The farm is a 60-acre (24 ha) parcel of land accessed via a long private drive on the east side of Richmond Town House Road (Rhode Island Route 112), just north of Pinecrest Road, and is a rare, virtually intact, example of a 19th-century farmstead. The main house, a 1+1⁄2-story Cape style structure, was built in 1784 by John Hoxsie.The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Joseph Jeffrey House is an historic house on Old Mill Road in Charlestown, Rhode Island. It is located on the east side of Old Mill Road, just south of Saw Mill Pond and Sawmill Brook, on a predominantly wooded 9.5-acre (3.8 ha) lot. The main house is a 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure with a gambrel roof and central chimney, with a small gable-roof ell to the northeast. The oldest portion of the main block appears to be the easterly side, which rests on an old stone foundation, and exhibits construction methods typical of the second quarter of the 18th century. The house was probably built by Joseph Jeffrey, a Narragansett, on land granted to him by the tribe, whose advisory council he sat on.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Usquepaug River is a river in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It flows approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) and is a major tributary of the Pawcatuck River. There are two dams along the river's length.

The Historic Village of the Narragansetts in Charlestown is an historic district in Charlestown, Rhode Island encompassing what were for nearly two centuries the reservation lands of the Narragansett people. The district covers 5,600 acres (23 km2) and is bounded by Route 112 on the east, U.S. Route 1 on the south, King's Factory Road (Bureau of Indian Affairs Route 411) on the west, and Route 91 on the north. These lands served as the Narragansett reservation between 1709 and 1880, when the tribe sold the land to the state and was formally detribalized. Because of this long period of Native occupation, the area is archaeologically important, containing both historic and prehistoric artifacts. The Narragansetts have since received federal recognition. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Richmond Airport (FAA LID: 08R) is a privately owned, public use airport in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. It is located three nautical miles (6 km) west of the central business district of the village of West Kingston, Rhode Island, in the town of Richmond, Rhode Island.

The Narragansett people are an Algonquian American Indian tribe from Rhode Island. Today, Narragansett people are enrolled in the federally recognized Narragansett Indian Tribe. They gained federal recognition in 1983. The tribe was nearly landless for most of the 20th century but acquired land in 1991 in their lawsuit Carcieri v. Salazar, and they petitioned the Department of the Interior to take the land into trust on their behalf. This would have made the newly acquired land to be officially recognized as part of the Narragansett Indian reservation, taking it out from under Rhode Island's legal authority. In 2009, the United States Supreme Court ruled against the request, declaring that tribes which had achieved federal recognition since the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act did not have standing to have newly acquired lands taken into federal trust and removed from state control.

The Great Swamp Fight or the Great Swamp Massacre was a crucial battle fought during King Philip's War between the colonial militia of New England and the Narragansett people in December 1675. It was fought near the villages of Kingston and West Kingston in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The combined force of the New England militia included 150 Pequots, and they inflicted a huge number of Narragansett casualties, including many hundred women and children. The battle has been described as "one of the most brutal and lopsided military encounters in all of New England's history." Since the 1930s, Narragansett and Wampanoag people commemorate the battle annually in a ceremony initiated by Narragansett-Wampanoag scholar Princess Red Wing.
