Highland Park (Rochester, New York)

A statue of Frederick Douglass sculpted by Sidney W. Edwards, sometimes called the Frederick Douglass Monument, was installed in Rochester, New York in 1899 after it was commissioned by the African-American activist John W. Thompson. According to Visualising Slavery: Art Across the African Diaspora, it was the first statue in the United States that memorialized a specific African-American person.Originally located by the Rochester station, the statue was moved in 1941 to Highland Bowl, a natural amphitheater in Highland Park. The statue was relocated again in October 2019, becoming the centerpiece of a new Frederick Douglass Memorial Plaza. The base is surrounded by plaques bearing words from Douglass's speeches.

The Rochester Lilac Festival is an art, music, food and flora festival hosted annually in early May in Highland Park in Rochester, New York. Highland Park possesses a huge collection of lilacs, featuring more than 1800 bushes and over 500 different varieties.The festival is started with a parade and frequently hosts concerts and other attractions during the week. The Highland Park arboretum and nearby Ellwanger Garden can be toured free of charge and are open to all visitors. The fields surrounding the arboretum host a myriad of vendor's tents and food stands. The festival ends each year with the annual Lilac 10K road race and 5K Family Fun Run. The 10K Course is USATF certified.

The Terrence Building is an abandoned high-rise building and former psychiatric hospital in the Azalea neighborhood of Rochester, New York. Opened in 1959, the 16-story tower was once the home of the Rochester State Hospital, serving as a mental ward that boasted 1,000 beds until it closed in 1995. The empty building, which was one of the largest mental health facilities built in the United States, continues to rise above the southern outskirts of the city to this day.

It has a diverse range of architectural styles. The district was the exclusive domain of the Ellwanger and Barry Botanic Gardens and Mt. Hope Cemetery throughout the mid- and late-19th century. It retains its elegant and spacious character of park land. Its features The district is punctuated with notable architect-designed buildings combined with more tightly knit early 20th century subdivision along the district's fringes. Among the notable buildings are the Warner Castle (1854), a 22-room mansion that is home to the Rochester Garden Center. The Mt. Hope Cemetery includes a little Gothic chapel designed by Andrew Jackson Warner. The cemetery is also known for its beautiful landscaping and picturesque views. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Rochester City School No. 24, also known as School #24 and Ellwanger and Barry School, is a historic school building located at Rochester in Monroe County, New York. It was constructed in 1913 and is a one-story, Spanish Colonial Revival style building. The walls are constructed of hollow tile sheathed with brick and plaster and the hipped roof is covered in red Spanish tile.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.The building replaced an earlier structure, which sat across the Meigs Street – Linden Street intersection from the current building, on land donated by local nurserymen George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry. The original Ellwanger and Barry School was built in 1877 and expanded in 1888 and 1890, but it was replaced by the new school building in 1913.The new school building boasted a number of modern amenities, along with a diverse set of curricular and extra-curricular activities. In particular, the building focused on student safety, becoming one of the first schools in the country to design each classroom with an external entrance. This inspired its early nickname, "The Safety First School", and inspired planners from across the country to incorporate similar design principles.The school's enrollment declined in the 1970s from a peak of more than 600 students. The 1978–79 school year was the building's last as a school, and in 1980 the building (making use of the many external doors) was converted to condominiums.

Linden–South Historic District is a national historic district located in the South Wedge neighborhood of Rochester in Monroe County, New York. The district consists of 136 contributing buildings, including 82 residential buildings, 53 outbuildings, and one church. The houses were constructed between 1872 and 1913 in a variety of vernacular interpretations of popular architectural styles including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival styles. The houses are 2 1/2-stories, are of frame or brick construction, and were designed by local architects employed by the developer Ellwanger & Barry. Among the more prominent are Andrew Jackson Warner and Claude Bragdon. The church is the former South Avenue Baptist Church, now Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church, built in 1909–1910 in a Late Gothic Revival style. Also in the district is a three-story, Queen Anne style mixed use building, with commercial space on the first floor and residential units above, located at 785 South Avenue (c. 1890).The area was developed by George Ellwanger and his partner Patrick Barry after they entered the real estate business in 1856. The district is located on the oldest part of the Ellwanger & Barry nursery, which they subdivided into residential lots and developed between 1872 and 1913.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Mount Hope Cemetery is a municipal cemetery in Rochester, New York, founded in 1838. It is the burial site of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Situated on 196 acres (79 ha) of land adjacent to the University of Rochester on Mount Hope Avenue, the cemetery is the permanent resting place of over 350,000 people. The annual growth rate of this cemetery is 500-600 burials per year. The cemetery hosts the sculpture Defenders of the Flag, a Civil War monument made in 1908 by the American sculptor Sally James Farnham. In 2018 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

David Hagaman House is a historic home located at Rochester in Monroe County, New York. It was constructed about 1840 and is a typical example of vernacular Greek Revival style rural domestic architecture in Western New York. The main block is a 2+1⁄2-story brick structure with a gable roof.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Ellwanger Garden (0.5 acres) is a historical garden located at 625 Mt. Hope Avenue, Rochester, New York. It is open only during the Lilac Festival (May), Peony Weekend (June), and by appointment. The garden was planted in 1867 for the residential grounds of George Ellwanger, noted 19th-century nurseryman, who also gave Rochester's fine Highland Park to the city. It was maintained for 115 years by the Ellwanger family. Since 1982, it has been owned and maintained as an historic landscape by the Landmark Society of Western New York, and features perennials, trees, and shrubs, with elements of Fletcher Steele garden design incorporated in the 1920s and 1930s.

South Wedge is a historic district and neighborhood in southeast Rochester, New York, in a predominantly residential section of the city. The district includes a variety of buildings constructed between the 1840s and 1920s, mainly two-story detached family residences. The architecture is primarily vernacular with a few examples of high-style Italianate and Queen Anne style residences, and the separately listed Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church and Nazareth House. Other notable buildings include St. Boniface Church, School 13, School 28, and Engine Company No. 8.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

The Cinema Theater is a motion picture theater in Rochester, New York. Opened as a neighborhood motion picture theater in 1914, it is one of the oldest continuously operated motion picture theaters in the United States. The theater is located at the corner of South Clinton Avenue and South Goodman Street in Rochester.
