History of Budapest

The Holocaust Memorial Center (Hungarian: Holokauszt Emlékközpont) is a renovated synagogue that dates back to the 1920s and serves as a memorial and museum for and about Hungarian Jews that were murdered in the Holocaust. While largely focused on Jews, the museum also mentions the discrimination and killings of Romani, of homosexuals, and of the disabled. It is located in Budapest, Hungary.The Holocaust Memorial Center is a former synagogue, the Páva Synagogue, at 39 Páva Utca, Budapest. It is a national institution established by the Government in 1999 and renovated and opened as the memorial and museum in 2004. It is the first Holocaust Memorial Center in Central Europe founded by a state. The museum was designed by architect István Mányi and Attila Gáti. Architecturally, the building is asymmetrical. A set of stairs lead visitors to the exhibitions, meant to "symbolize the distorted and twisted time of The Holocaust." There are permanent and temporary exhibits, and a research center. The research center offers people to search for their family member and have the chance to add to the list of names, increasing their database. A wall in the courtyard of the Holocaust Memorial Center is inscribed with the names of 60,000 of Hungary's approximately 600,000 victims of the genocide.

The Páva Street Synagogue is a large-scale Hungarian synagogue building designed by Lipót Baumhorn in the first half of the 20th century, and nowadays it houses the Holocaust Memorial Center and the Budapest Synagogue.

Corvin-negyed is a station on the M3 line of the Budapest Metro. The station opened on 31 December 1976 as one of six stations in the initial phase of construction, between Deák Ferenc tér and Nagyvárad tér. From its opening until 2011, the station was named Ferenc körút after its section of the Grand Boulevard. In 2011, the Corvinus Quarter (Corvin-negyed) was established as a residential and commercial redevelopment area. The city renamed the station after the new district as part of several name changes to metro stations that year.

The Museum of Applied Arts (Hungarian: Iparművészeti Múzeum) is a museum in Budapest, Hungary. It is the third-oldest applied arts museum in the world.

The College for Advanced Studies in Social Theory (Hungarian: Társadalomelméleti Kollégium, TEK) is the oldest independent college of leftist-intellectual orientation at Corvinus University of Budapest as well as in Hungary.

Semmelweis University (Hungarian: Semmelweis Egyetem) is a research-led medical school in Budapest, Hungary, founded in 1769. With six faculties and a doctoral school it covers all aspects of medical and health sciences. The university is also the largest provider of health care services in Hungary. Most of the departments cater for the most serious cases and patients requiring complex treatment.As the highest listed institution in Hungary in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Semmelweis University is among the top 250 universities in the world.

Leövey Klára Gimnázium (in English: Klara Leovey High School) is a high school in Budapest, Hungary. Students attend the school from age 14 to age 18.

Józsefváros (German: Josefstadt) is the 8th district of Budapest, Hungary. It is the part of the city centre in the wider sense as one of the 18–19th century older suburbs, close to Belváros.

The Rákóczi Square Market Hall or Market Hall II is one of the great Budapest market halls built during the monarchy. It was originally opened in 1894 and has been operating in its present form since 1991. This institution was named after the new district of Józsefváros in 2012, the Hall quarter. The Rákóczi tér market hall was the second of the large Budapest market halls built in the VIII. In 1890, Győző Czigler made a proposal for its replacement. [1] It was built in 1894 and designed by István Rozinay and Pál Klunzinger. The hall opened to customers in 1897. In the post-delivery period, a horse-drawn carriage could be driven into the hall at the main entrance from Rákóczi Square, thus facilitating unloading. Inside the hall there were 4 and 6 m² storehouses, with a total of 375 permanent and 55 temporary stores. The cellar was used for storage, while the corner pavilions housed a shopkeeper, police, hall control, first aid and restaurants. Above them were rented apartments. By 1936, the traffic in the hall had become so low that it was planned to close it or transform it into a swimming pool, but these plans were not realized later. On the night of May 6, 1988, a fire broke out in the hall and the building burned down. The market hall was not demolished, but it was renovated according to the plans of the architects György Tokár and György Hidasi, and reopened on 25 July 1991.

Gát utca is a short quiet street off Haller utca in central Ferencváros, Budapest, Hungary. The street links Haller utca with Thaly Kálmán utca. Cross streets are Lenhossék utca, Márton utca and Sobieski János utca.

Petőfi híd or Petőfi Bridge (named after Sándor Petőfi, old name is Horthy Miklós Bridge, named after governor Miklós Horthy) is a bridge in Budapest, connecting Pest and Buda across the Danube. It is the second southernmost public bridge in Budapest. Its two ends are: Boráros tér (southern end of Grand Boulevard and terminus of the Csepel HÉV) Goldmann György tér (next to the campuses of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics)Budapest already made a proposal in the early 1900s to build the bridge, but the competent state bodies believed that a bridge in Óbuda was much more important. After the start of World War I., the idea was postponed, however, the bridge was still important for the townspeople.The bridge was built between 1933 and 1937, according to the plans of Hubert Pál Álgyay. It is 514 m in length (along with the sections leading up) and 25.6 m in width. It was destroyed by the retreating German troops during the Second World War. Its rebuilt version was inaugurated in November 1952, when it also took on its new name, Petőfi Bridge.

Semmelweis Klinikák (Clinics) is a station on the M3 line of the Budapest Metro. It opened on December 31, 1976, as one of the initial six stations of the line, between Deák Ferenc tér and Nagyvárad tér.From its opening until 6 September 2019, the station was known as Klinikák, meaning clinics. The area around the station is home to several of the medical facilities of Semmelweis University, the city's medical school and one of the largest health care providers. As part of the university's 250th anniversary, the Mayor of Budapest, István Tarlós declared that the station name would change to Semmelweis Klinikák upon completion of the station's renovations.
