Whitby

Whitby Museum is an independent museum in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England, run by Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, a learned society and registered charity, established in 1823. It is located in a building opened in 1931 in Pannett Park, Whitby, which also contains the Society's Library and Archive. The museum contains a wide range of material relating to the history of Whitby, and has specialist collections relating to: Jurassic fossils, in particular ammonites and marine reptiles Whitby jet Captain James Cook and HM Bark Endeavour Whitby's whaling industry. The Natural History of the North Yorkshire coast and moors Costume and textiles The museum also contains a Hand of Glory, the dried and pickled hand of a hanged man, said to have magical powers. The museum has a reference library and archive documenting the industries and social history of the town and area. This is used as a research facility.

The Whitby Hospital is a community hospital in Springhill, Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It is managed by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

Caedmon College was a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The school is named after Cædmon, the earliest English (Northumbrian) poet whose name is known. Established in 1912 as the County School, Whitby, it was a mixed grammar school for pupils aged 11 to 18 until 1972 when it became comprehensive and was renamed Whitby School. At this time the school starting age decreased to 14. The school was renamed Whitby Community College in 1993 when the school started to offer adult education classes. In September 2014 Whitby Community College merged with Caedmon School to form Caedmon College and increased its starting age to 11 once again. Today Caedmon College is a community school administered by North Yorkshire Council. The emblem of the County School was Captain Cook's ship HMS Endeavour, portrayed with the Whitby ammonites on the sail and a flag composed of the flag of England with the upper third having three white roses on a red background. Caedmon College offers GCSEs, BTECs and Cambridge Nationals as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs. In February 2019 the college agreed to federate with nearby Eskdale School creating the Whitby Secondary Partnership.

The Whitby Pavilion is a theatre and events venue in Whitby, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed between 1876 and 1879, on the initiative of George Elliott. It was designed as a theatre, with a saloon and surrounded by pleasure grounds. After World War I, a large extension was constructed, known as the Floral Hall, used primarily for dances. The hall became dilapidated, and was demolished in 1989. The theatre was renovated, and the Northern Lights Suite was constructed in 1990, providing a cafe, and space for exhibitions and markets. The theatre can now seat 380 people, and the stalls can be removed to create a dancefloor. Since 2011, the theatre has also been used as a cinema. In 2012, Scarborough Borough Council partnered with Sheffield International Venues to operate the premises, but this was terminated in 2020 as it proved unprofitable. The building was designed by Julius Mayhew and Edward Smales in the Queen Anne style. It is described by Historic England as "a plain Victorian building of domestic appearance". The older section has a barrel vaulted ceiling.

The Church of St Ninian is a former place of worship in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The building was a proprietary chapel, the only one in the whole of Yorkshire, and one of only two Anglican churches to be dedicated to St Ninian in England. St Ninian's used to serve as an Anglican place of worship (as a chapel of ease to St Mary's Church, which is on the east cliff at Whitby). St Ninian's later became involved in the Anglican Catholic Church after a disagreement with the Church of England over the ordination of women priests. The church is noted for its interior woodwork, crafted by men who worked in the shipyards at Whitby noted for turning out the ships used by Captain Cook on his explorations looking for Terra Australis. The church was the second oldest Anglican church in the town of Whitby, with more churches and chapels being built after St Ninian's. The church ceased to be a functioning religious house in 2019.

Prospect Hill Junction was a railway junction in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The junction had access to the line into Whitby Town railway station, Whitby West Cliff railway station (and beyond to Loftus), and also to the Scarborough line, which went south across Larpool Viaduct. It first saw traffic in December 1883, but did not open as a junction until 1885. It was closed to passenger and freight traffic in March 1965, though the lines were not lifted until 1973.

The Magpie Café is a seafood restaurant in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1937, but its building dates back to the 18th century, when it was a merchant's house.

Whitby engine shed was a steam locomotive depot located at the south end of Whitby railway station (original Whitby Town) in North Yorkshire, England. The shed was opened in 1847, extended in the 1860s, and closed in 1959, when the closure of lines and dieselisation of the routes from Whitby took hold. The shed building, which was grade II listed in 1991, still stands, being utilised for various enterprises, and is now used as holiday accommodation.

Whitby West Cliff railway station was a railway station on the Whitby Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway. It was opened on 3 December 1883, to serve the West Cliff area of the town of Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It was one of two stations serving Whitby; the other was Whitby Town railway station, which served the lines to Malton and Battersby. West Cliff closed on 12 June 1961 meaning trains from Scarborough had to reverse at Prospect Hill Junction to go to Whitby Town.

Whitby Lifeboat Station is a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It is one of nine situated along the Yorkshire coast. Whitby has had a lifeboat station since 1802, with the RNLI responsible since 1861. In its 200 plus year history, Whitby has had five different lifeboat stations (although not all operated at the same time). A sixth lifeboat and station was located at Upgang, just up the coast from Whitby, and whilst it was considered separate from Whitby, it was crewed by men from the Whitby lifeboat. The present day station covers a huge swathe of the northern coast from the Humber to Hartlepool, and is regularly listed as the busiest in the north of England. The station has two lifeboats; a 13-metre (43 ft) Shannon-class All-weather lifeboat (ALB) 13-49 Lois Ivan (ON 1356), and the D-class (IB1) Inshore lifeboat (ILB) Warter Priory (D-810).

Whitby Town Football Club is an English football club based in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The club participates in the Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football. Founded in 1880, Whitby are one of the oldest clubs from the North Riding of Yorkshire. The club has spent their entire history in the amateur and semi-professional leagues, though they reached the second round of the FA Cup in both 1983–84 and 1985–86. The level which the club are at now is the highest they have been throughout their history, rising up from the lower sections of non-league football during the 1990s, winning the Northern Premier League First Division on the way as well as the Northern League Cup six times. However, the formation of the Conference North/South Leagues at step 2 in the non-League pyramid effectively relegated Town back to step 3. Whitby's most prestigious honour is arguably the FA Vase, which they won in 1996–97 after defeating North Ferriby United at Wembley Stadium. Whitby play their home games at the 3,500 capacity Turnbull Ground on Upgang Lane. The club's colours are somewhat distinct in English football and are intentionally similar to Italian side Sampdoria wearing a blue shirt with a touch of white, black and red.
