Clayville, Rhode Island

Clayville Historic District is an 81-acre (33 ha) historic district in Foster and Scituate, Rhode Island. The district encompasses the heart of the village of Clayville, a small 19th-century mill village. It is centered on the junction of Plainfield Pike, Field Hill Road, and Victory Highway near the Clayville Mill pond, and is roughly bisected by the town line between Foster and Scituate. The mill pond is impounded by a c. 1847 dam, which powered mills whose ruins and waterways lie downstream. The village is mainly residential, with vernacular 19th-century construction predominating. Notable buildings include the Clayville Christian Union Church, built 1867–71 with Greek Revival styling, and the c. 1845 Clayville Schoolhouse. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The Josephine White Block is an historic mixed-use commercial and residential building at 737-739 Cranston Street in the Elmwood section of southern Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It is a three-story structure with a stamped-metal facade, and sidewalls of brick (first floor) and clapboard (upper floors). It was built c. 1894 for Josephine White, a widow who lived nearby, and houses two storefronts in the first level and four living units above. The metal facade is the only known local installation of the St. Louis, Missouri-based Mesker Brothers, a nationally known manufacturer of metal architectural elements.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Amos Cook House is an historic house in Scituate, Rhode Island. Built in 1812, it is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a large central chimney. The center entry is framed by a Greek Revival surround that was a later alteration, and there is a shed-roof porch extending along the southern (left) facade. The house has retained much of its interior woodwork. The house was built by Augustus and Carver Hopkins, members of Rhode Island's prominent Hopkins family. It was purchased, along with a number of farm outbuildings, by Amos Cook in 1865, and was converted into a summer residence in the early 20th century.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Dexter Arnold Farmstead is a historic farmstead on Chopmist Hill Road (Rhode Island Route 102) in Scituate, Rhode Island. The main house, a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure five bays wide, with a large central chimney, was built in 1813. The 3.6-acre (1.5 ha) property also has five outbuildings which appear (based in part on photographs of the property from 1860) to be near contemporaries to the house, a relative rarity in rural Rhode Island. The main barn survived into the 20th century, but was destroyed by the New England Hurricane of 1938. The property also includes a small family cemetery. The house, built by Dexter Arnold in land belonging to his father, remained in family hands until 1975.The farmhouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Radio Listening Posts were established by the Federal Communications Commission within the United States to listen to radio traffic during World War II. One of these was at Scituate, Rhode Island. Others were at Fort Ward (Washington), Winter Harbor, Maine, Amagansett, New York, Cheltenham, Maryland and Jupiter, Florida. About one year before the United States entered WW2 Thomas B. Cave was sent to Rhode Island to set up a secret radio listening post. The purpose of the post was to detect radio transmissions from German spies in the United States and assist in locating downed aircraft. In March 1941 he abandoned his first choice of Greenville, RI for a farmhouse with 183 acres of land located on Darby Road near Chopmist Hill in Scituate, Rhode Island. The FCC leased the farmhouse from Mr. William A. Suddard.The completed listening post contained over 80,000 feet of wire, 11 antennas and many advanced radio receivers. The site included two direction finding antennas. These could be rotated to get a bearing on the transmitting station. This information when compared with similar measurements from other distant stations allowed the transmitting location to be triangulated. The use of two of these antennas meant both parties in a conversation could be located.

Foster Center is a village in the town of Foster, Rhode Island, United States. It was listed as a census-designated place (CDP) in 2010, with a population of 355. Historic elements of the village are included in the Foster Center Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1974. The district features various colonial and Greek Revival houses as well as the still functioning town building from the late 18th century.

Foster is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, in the United States. The population was 4,469 at the 2020 census.

The Hopkins Mill District is a historic district in Foster, Rhode Island. It encompasses a historic mill village that extends along Old Danielson Pike between its two junctions with Danielson Pike (United States Route 6). The area has been the site of mills (at first grist- and sawmills) since the 18th century, and includes one of Foster's oldest houses, the c. 1720 Hopkins-Potter House at 21 Old Danielson Pike. Prominent public buildings in the district include the c. 1830 Curtis Hall at 18 Danielson Pike, which was long used as a tavern and social gathering place, and the 1869-71 Hopkins Falls Union Church.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, where it is misspelled "Nopkins".

Swamp Meadow Bridge is a covered bridge crossing Hemlock Brook located on Central Pike in the town of Foster, Rhode Island. It is the second bridge to be built at this site.

Whaley's Hollow (also known as Pottersville and Maple Valley) is a village in Coventry, Rhode Island. Thomas Whaley was an early settler in the area who operated a saw mill and whose home still stands today on Maple Valley Road. John Waterman built Waterman’s Tavern around 1747 which was used for town meetings until the new Town House was constructed in 1835 at Maple Valley Road and Matteson. The tavern also had stocks and a whipping post for punishment of crimes. During the American Revolution, the French Army under Rochambeau camped near the Tavern while marching to Virginia in 1781 and on their return in 1782. In 1851 Robert Potter, John Potter II and Albert Potter created water-powered bobbin mill near Whaley's Hollow from Thomas Whaley’s old saw mill, and the village then became known as Pottersville. In 1872 the Union Bobbin Manufacturing Company was formed and operated from 1895 until the land was sold to Lewis E. Williams. Waterman’s Tavern still exists as a family home on Maple Valley Road and near the Whaley homesteads are three family cemeteries. Today, Whaley’s Hollow is often known as Maple Valley.

The Battey–Barden House is an historic house in Scituate, Rhode Island, US. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure with a large central chimney. A 1+1⁄2-story kitchen ell extends from the rear of the main block. The main block's construction date is uncertain, with architectural evidence suggesting it was built between about 1816 and 1831. It was probably built around 1824 for Horace Battey, a farmer and shopkeeper. The house is particularly notable for the stencilwork on its interior walls.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 29, 1980.

The Waterman Tavern is a historic house and tavern at 283 Maple Valley Road, near Whaley's Hollow in Coventry, Rhode Island. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built before 1747 by John Waterman, who was licensed to operate a tavern on the premises in that year. It is five bays wide with a central chimney. The site was advantageously located on the main road between Providence and Plainfield, Connecticut. The tavern was a center of civic discourse, and town meetings were regularly held there until 1835.The tavern was one of the first stops along the route taken by Count de Rochambeau's army during its 1781 march from Providence to Yorktown, Virginia during the American Revolutionary War. The main army camped near the tavern, while the officers were quartered in the tavern itself.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
