Froncysyllte

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (Welsh pronunciation: [ˌpɔntkəˈsəɬtɛ]; Welsh: Traphont Ddŵr Pontcysyllte) is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen in northeast Wales. The 18-arched stone and cast iron structure is for use by narrowboats and was completed in 1805 having taken ten years to design and build. It is 12 feet (3.7 metres) wide and is the longest aqueduct in Great Britain as well as the highest canal aqueduct in the world. A towpath runs alongside the watercourse on one side.The aqueduct was to have been a key part of the central section of the proposed Ellesmere Canal, an industrial waterway that would have created a commercial link between the River Severn at Shrewsbury and the Port of Liverpool on the River Mersey. Although a less expensive construction course was surveyed further to the east, the westerly high-ground route across the Vale of Llangollen was preferred because it would have taken the canal through the mineral-rich coalfields of North East Wales. Only parts of the canal route were completed because the expected revenues required to complete the entire project were never generated. Most major work ceased after the completion of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in 1805. The structure is a Grade I listed building and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trevor Basin is a canal basin on the Llangollen Canal, situated near Trevor, Wrexham County Borough, Wales, in between Llangollen and Ruabon. The basin was originally built at the northern end of the central section of the Ellesmere Canal, just 150yds north of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. With the abandonment of the planned extension to Chester, Trevor Basin became the terminus of the Ellesmere Canal itself. The canal was later extended westwards, to Llangollen and the Horseshoe Falls, to act as a feeder. The basin has become a popular tourist destination owing to the adjacent aqueduct, for which is provides several car parks and an additional photo opportunity. A pub, a tea rooms, visitor centre, cafe boat and public toilets now surround the basin.

The Ruabon Brook Tramway (also known as Jessop's Tramway, and in its later years as the Shropshire Union Tramway) was a Welsh horse-drawn tramway linking the Ruabon coalfield to the Ellesmere Canal at Froncysyllte, with a private extension into the Monsanto works at Cefn Mawr which reconnected to the main line at Trevor. The area was rich in coal, clay and minerals.

Pont Cysyllte, also known as Cysylltau Bridge or Bont Bridge, is a 17th-century road bridge crossing the River Dee near the village of Trevor, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It lies 200 m west of Thomas Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and, carrying the B5434 road, is the main connection between Trevor and nearby Froncysyllte. The sandstone bridge is dated '1697', though it was substantially rebuilt during the 18th century, and only the south arch and part of the south pier are original. It became a Grade I listed structure in 1963 and is also a scheduled monument.The bridge comprises three arches, with full-height triangular cutwaters at up- and down-stream ends of both piers, each topped by a pedestrian refuge. The older, south arch has a span of 10.7 metres (35 ft) and the two newer arches have spans of 14.0 metres (46 ft) and 14.2 metres (47 ft).The bridge is frequently damaged by motor vehicles being, at its narrowest, only 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) wide. Vehicles are required to give way to any oncoming vehicle already on the bridge.

Cefn Mawr (Welsh: Cefn-mawr; ) is a village in the community of Cefn within Wrexham County Borough, Wales. Its name translates as "big ridge". The population in 2001 was 6,669, increasing to 7,051 in 2011. The community of Cefn comprises the villages of Cefn Mawr, Cefn-bychan ("little ridge"), Acrefair, Penybryn, Newbridge, Plas Madoc and Rhosymedre and is situated on the northern slopes of the Dee Valley.

Tŷ Mawr Country Park (Welsh: Parc Gwledig Tŷ Mawr) is a country park and farm park near Cefn Mawr in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The country park lies between Cefn-bychan and Newbridge to the north, the River Dee to the south and west, and the Cefn Viaduct carrying the Shrewsbury–Chester line to the east.

Trevor (Welsh: Trefor) is a village in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is situated in the scenic Vale of Llangollen, on the A539 between Llangollen and Wrexham, in the community of Llangollen Rural, and in the historic county of Denbighshire. Its name is an anglicised version of the Welsh place-name Trefor, meaning "large village". This was one of the old townships of the parish of Llangollen, giving its name to both a powerful landowning family whose ancestral home was in the township, and to the later industrial settlement represented by the modern village. In common with neighbouring Froncysyllte, Trevor is largely made up of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cottages for workers in the area's traditional industries of limestone quarrying and brick-making. Although these industries have now disappeared the area has a rich industrial archeology. Trevor lies on the Llangollen Canal at the northern end of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct: the Trevor Basin is at the north end of the aqueduct. Until 1965, the village had a railway station on the now-closed Ruabon–Barmouth line. However the nearby Llangollen Railway aims to extend eastwards to Ruabon, which may include rebuilding and full restoration of the station as part of the work. The Offa's Dyke Path passes through the village.

Cefn railway station was a minor railway station on the Great Western Railway's London to Birkenhead main line serving the mining village of Cefn Mawr in Wales. It opened as Rhosymedre in 1848 but was resited on an adjacent site in 1849 and named Cefn. It had an adjacent signal box but the station seems not to have handled freight traffic. The remains of the station and yard area can be seen just to the north of Cefn Viaduct (also known as Dee Viaduct). Although the station is gone the railway remains open as part of the Shrewsbury to Chester Line.

Trevor railway station was formerly a station on the Ruabon to Barmouth Line in north-east Wales. The line was double track between Ruabon and Llangollen and there was a signal box at Trevor. According to the Official Handbook of Stations the station handled both goods and passenger traffic in 1956 and the goods yard was equipped with a 3-ton crane.There were also private sidings from the neighbourbood of the station to the firebrick works in the middle of the village (via a level crossing), and to the Cefn Mawr Monsanto works. The latter also connected to the Pontcysyllte Branch, and via the Rhos Branch eventually rejoined the main line on the outskirts of Wrexham.

Plaskynaston Lane is a demolished football stadium in Cefn Mawr, Wrexham, Wales. It was the home stadium of Cefn Druids A.F.C. of the Cymru Alliance. The stadium held 2,000 spectators. The last game played at the ground was the Tony Collins Memorial Cup Final U12, between Llay FC and Marford & Gresford FC, refereed by Lewys Evans in memory of a former Cefn Druids A.F.C. player. Cefn Druids A.F.C. now play at the Rock, Rhosymedre. The site is now used as a Tesco superstore.

The Cefn (Newbridge) Viaduct is Grade II* listed railway viaduct across the River Dee between Cefn and Chirk communities in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The viaduct is near the villages of Cefn Mawr (and Cefn-bychan), Pentre and Newbridge. The viaduct forms the eastern boundary of Tŷ Mawr Country Park and is around a mile downstream of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Acrefair railway station (Welsh pronunciation: [ˌakrɛˈvɑɪr] ak-REH-vire) was a former station on the Ruabon–Barmouth line in North East Wales. It closed to passengers on 18 January 1965 as part of the Beeching Axe.
