Aalsum, Groningen

Niehove (old name: Suxwort) is a village in the municipality of Westerkwartier in Groningen, Netherlands. The village was located on the island of Humsterland in the former Lauwerszee from c. 800 until c. 1500. It is a terp (artificial living hill) village with two ring roads and the church in the middle. The village is a protected site. In 2019, Elsevier Weekblad named Niehove the most beautiful village of the Netherlands.

Ludgeruskerk or Liudgerkerk is a church located in Oldehove, Groningen, a village in the north of the Netherlands. It is a Romanesque-Gothic structure from the Middle Ages, dedicated to Ludger.

Oldehove is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Westerkwartier, about 16 km northwest of the city of Groningen. The town has a notable skyline with two windmills and two of its three churches visible from almost every angle, the third church (De Zaaier) being obscured from vision by houses and trees because it doesn't have the traditional tower associated with most churches in similar villages. Oldehove was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Zuidhorn. The Town Hall still exists neighboring the oldest church in the centre of town. The building is owned by private owners and functions as a home. Oldehove is also one of the few villages in the region left with its own in-use firehouse, housing the two vehicles used by the local volunteer-firefighters. The only way of entering the village through public transport is with bus 35 and bus 36 from Groningen and Winsum respectively.

Houwerzijl (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌɦʌu.ərˈzɛil]; Gronings: Haauwerziel [ɦaːu̯əɾˈzil]) is a small village in the Netherlands; it is located in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen. Houwerzijl was located on the edge of land and water. Three terps (artificial hills) were built south of the current village, and were one of the oldest in Groningen. The hills contained fertile soil, and large parts have been excavated, and only fragments remain.It was first mentioned in 1347 as Fredericus de Howersyle. The name means the lock (zijl) of the estate (Houw) of Fredericus. The lock was demolished in 1728, because it was no longer needed, and only the house of the operator remains.The Theefabriek is a tea museum and tearoom in the village.

Niezijl (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈni.zɛi̯l]; Gronings: Nijziel), historically Bomsterzijl (probably from bom, meaning 'low, water-enclosed piece of land'), is a village in the municipality of Westerkwartier in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The village is located between Grijpskerk and Zuidhorn on the N355, the trunk highway from Leeuwarden to Groningen. As of 2021, Niezijl had a population of 420. The village is intersected by two canals, the Niezijlsterdiep and the Hoerediep. The village originally belonged to the Juursemakluft in the parish Grijpskerk. It got its own church in 1651 and has been an independent church ever since. South of the village, on the Van Starkenborgh Canal, is a restored polder mill, the Zwakkenburgermolen.

Saaksum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈsaːk.sʏm]; Gronings: Soaksum) is a village in the municipality of Westerkwartier in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. As of 2021, it had a population of 90. Until the municipal reorganization of 1990, it belonged to the former municipality of Oldehove. Saaksum is a wierde village in good condition. It is a protected villagescape. The wierde is located on the edge of the village, on the main road from Aduard to Roodehaan.

Leens (Dutch pronunciation: [leːns]; Gronings: Lains [ɫɑɪns]) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Het Hogeland. Leens was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Ulrum, Eenrum and Kloosterburen.

Kommerzijl (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkɔ.mərˌzɛi̯l]; Gronings: Kommerziel), until the end of the 17th century called Opslachterzijl, is a linear village in the municipality of Westerkwartier in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands, located on the Kommerzijlsterdiep, which continues after the village as Kommerzijlsterriet and flows into the Reitdiep. To the west of the village lies the Ruigewaard and to the east the Humsterland. As of 2021, Kommerzijl had a population of 505.

Schathoes Verhildersum was a restaurant in Leens in the Netherlands, on the estate of Verhildersum. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 2004 and retained that rating until 2012.Owner and head chef of Schathoes Verhildersum was Dick Soek. He took over the Piloersemaborg in 2005, owning and running two restaurants. In 2012, for practical and economical reasons he moved the restaurant and all staff from Leens to Den Ham, continuing his enterprise on one location. Schathoes lost its Michelin star in the process. In 1994, Dick Soek took over the "Schathuis" of the borg Verhildersum in Leens. Although "schathuis" literally translates as "treasure house", it was in fact the cow shed, taking its name from the old Frysian word "skat", meaning cattle. The schathuis was at that time a tearoom, and Soek added a fine dining restaurant to it.In 2003, Elsevier named Schathoes Verhildersum one of the 39 best Italian restaurants in the Netherlands. Head chef Soek explains his Italian style by pointing to his Italian training as a cook and his Italian ideas.

De Marne (Dutch pronunciation: [də ˈmɑrnə] ) is a former municipality in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland.
