Stol (Karawanks)

The Prešeren Lodge at Stol (Slovene: Prešernova koča na Stolu; 2,174 m or 7,133 ft) is a mountain hut on the southern side of Mt. Stol in the Karawanks (northwestern Slovenia), just below the peak of Little Stol (Mali Stol; 2,198 m or 7,211 ft). It is named after the Slovenian poet France Prešeren. The first hut was built in 1909. During World War II, it was burnt down; it was rebuilt in 1966.

Wertatscha (also Vertatscha, Slovene: Vrtača) is a mountain, 2,180 m above sea level (AA), in the Karawanks on the border between Austria and Slovenia. In the old German Alpine dialect it was also called the Deutscher Berg ("German Mountain", Slovenian Nemška gora) or Zinnenwand. Other names are Meniška gora (Mönchsberg) and Rtača.

Doslovče (pronounced [ˈdoːslɔu̯tʃɛ]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It is best known as the birthplace of the Slovene writer Fran Saleški Finžgar. His house has been a small museum since 1971.

The Finžgar House is a house in the village of Doslovče in the Municipality of Žirovnica in Slovenia. It is the house where the Slovene writer Fran Saleški Finžgar was born in 1871. Administratively, it is part of the Upper Carniola Museum from Kranj. As well as a museum about the writer, it is a museum of rural architecture and life in the Upper Carniola during the late 19th century. It is outfitted with original furniture from the period, some from the actual house and some gathered from elsewhere.Until the 1930s, the house was a cultural centre and a meeting place of intellectuals from the area. In World War II, it was almost completely destroyed. It was converted into a museum in 1971, on the centenary of the writer's birth. The works were led by the ethnologist Janez Bogataj, whose mother was Finžgar's niece and who spent about 15 years in Finžgar's company. Finžgar was the initiator of the public arrangement of the Prešeren House in the nearby Vrba.

Breznica (pronounced [ˈbɾeːznitsa]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It is the seat of the municipality. Most of the village has developed on the slopes of the Reber range, leaving open fields towards the south and east. To the west the built-up area has extended to Zabreznica.

Moste (pronounced [ˈmoːstɛ]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia.

Ajdna (1064 m) is a peak in the Karawanks in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. Access to it is easiest from the village of Potoki in the neighbouring Municipality of Jesenice. A settlement from late Antiquity has been found just below the summit and evidence shows that it was probably inhabited much earlier. Excavations began in 1976. Most evidence is from the period immediately after the collapse of the Roman Empire (476 AD), when it seems locals moved to the safety of the peak from the valley below during a period of upheaval and migration of various Germanic and Slavic tribes through the region. With its location high above the valley with a natural precipitous barrier towards the south and an excellent view up and down the Upper Sava Valley, Ajdna was an ideal location for a defendable settlement. A number of other high-elevation settlements from the period between the 4th and 6th centuries have been found in the area of Slovenia, but Ajdna lies at the highest elevation of all. Remains of a total of 25 buildings have been excavated, including an early Christian temple. In a nearby building eleven graves have been excavated and the potsherds, weapons, and jewellery found are on display in the museum in Kranj. It is believed this was not the main burial ground which has so far not been discovered. The remains of the religious building have been conserved, roofed over and are open to visitors.Ajdna has been declared an archaeological monument of national importance by the Slovene government.

Zabreznica (pronounced [zaˈbɾeːznitsa]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It is the location of Žirovnica Primary School, which serves the primary education needs of all the villages in the municipality. Above the village, on the Reber Ridge, a church dedicated to St. Lawrence was rebuilt in the 1990s on the foundations of a Romanesque church that was demolished in 1821. It is decorated with work by the contemporary Slovene artists Janez Bernik and Andrej Jemec.

Selo pri Žirovnici (pronounced [ˈsɛːlɔ pɾi ʒiˈɾoːu̯nitsi]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It lies on the slopes of the Reber range between Žirovnica and Zabreznica and is more or less a continuous settlement with Zabreznica. There are open fields south of the village.

Rodine (pronounced [ˈɾoːdinɛ]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. In recent years, the settlement has grown northwards, further up the hill side and westwards to reach right to the outskirts of Smokuč. There are open fields and forests to the east and south of the village.

Smokuč (pronounced [ˈsmɔːkutʃ]) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia.

St. Mark's Church (cerkev svetega Marka) is a small church on the outskirts of the village of Vrba in Upper Carniola in Slovenia. Despite being a modest and unprepossessing building, St. Mark's Church is widely known in Slovenia due to its appearance in O Vrba, one of the best-known sonnets of the Slovene national poet France Prešeren. Though it is only mentioned in the last verse of the sonnet, the church has come to symbolize the home and safety that one yearns for when the bitterness and disappointment of having followed one's destiny to foreign lands becomes too much to bear. In January 2011, the church was proclaimed cultural monument of national importance by the Government of Slovenia.
