The Battle of Orthez (27 February 1814) saw the Anglo-Spanish-Portuguese Army under Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Wellington attack an Imperial French army led by Marshal Nicolas Soult in southern France. The outnumbered French repelled several Allied assaults on their right flank, but their center and left flank were overcome and Soult was compelled to retreat. At first the withdrawal was conducted in good order, but it eventually ended in a scramble for safety and many French soldiers became prisoners. The engagement occurred near the end of the Peninsular War. In mid-February, Wellington's army broke out of its small area of conquered territory near Bayonne. Moving east, the Allies drove the French back from several river lines. After a pause in the campaign, the westernmost Allied corps surrounded and isolated Bayonne. Resuming their eastward drive, the remaining two Allied corps pushed Soult's army back to Orthez where the French marshal offered battle. In subsequent operations, Soult decided to abandon the large western port of Bordeaux and fall back east toward Toulouse. The next action was the Battle of Toulouse.

Huguenot forces under the leadership of Gabriel de Montgomery defeated Royalist forces under Antoine de Lomagne, vicomte de Terride in French Navarre. It lies 40 km NW of Pau on the Southern railway to Bayonne. The town also encompasses the small village of Sainte-Suzanne, an independent commune until 1973; residents of the town are called either Orthéziens or Sainte-Suzannais.

La Moutète was an indoor sporting arena located in Orthez, France, home of Elan Bearnais Orthez French basketball team from 1931 to 1991. It was actually an indoor market place for Orthez inhabitants especially used to sell living poultries. The place was transformed into a basketball field for the home games, seats being built and unbuilt before and after every game. As Elan Béarnais Orthez became a successful organisation, La Moutète became outdated for an elite team. The Elan Bearnais Orthez then moved to Pau the prefecture of Pyrénées-Atlantiques departement, in the modern arena of Palais des Sports de Pau and been renamed Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez. Nowadays La Moutète is a place for concerts, shows and expositions, also hosting a merchant gallery and a pub named after the former resident club.

Saint-Girons-en-Béarn (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ ʒiʁɔ̃ ɑ̃ beaʁn], literally Saint-Girons in Béarn; Occitan: Sent Guironç) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. The commune was formerly called Saint-Girons, and was officially renamed Saint-Girons-en-Béarn on 7 July 2006.

The gare d'Orthez is a railway station in Orthez, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The station is located on the Toulouse - Bayonne railway line. The station is served by TGV (high speed trains), Intercités de Nuit (night trains), Intercités (long distance) and TER (local) services operated by the SNCF.
